Thin Air
Grace Weymouth Mar 2021
I needed a break,
From the break already given
I needed one more day

Everyone has separate lives
It’s busy on the streets
Wait,
It’s too busy

The cars are louder
The lights are brighter
Wow the air is thinner in here!
Maybe something is off with the air filter?
Everyone else seems fine
I’m fine too

The face is called to arms
I know this face
I’m a master at it
Years of practice takes over
A smile appears
Here we go

My brain
My body
My thoughts
Terrorized
I’m being attacked
By my own thoughts

I knew I needed more time
I wasn’t ready
Here we go

YOU!
STOP THE CYCLE!

The cycle can’t stop
Why try?

My eyes flitter from face to face
I’m acutely aware of every noise
Wow that truck is loud

Over stimulation
I hate this
The more you try to stop
The worse it gets

Dear Lord,
I shouldn’t be driving
I can’t concentrate
Help me!

Ha!
Funny
Like you actually thought it could be helped
You already take meds for it
What else can you do?

Just
Get
Home
It will be over soon

Over?
Oh great
Always so optimistic
I’m not leaving

I know the cycle
I know it well
He is here to stay
At least for a while

Smile!
You must smile
It’s not pretending anymore
It’s just… this way
Just!
Get!
Home!

Oh thank God
Home I’ll be fine
No more driving

Step out of the car
Don’t listen to the world
Block it out

Block it out?
You think you can just turn everything off?
Gee that would be helpful

Stairs,
One at a time

Step
Step
Step
Step

Almost there

Step
Step
Step

Done!

Keys
I need my keys
The door,it’s locked
I just climbed a mountain
The air is thin
Times running out
Hurry

….
Okay
Drop the face
Tell him
He helps

“Hi honey”
“Hi”
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing”

Really?
The small voice?

Speak up!
He knows you too well

I’m sitting
No, im laying down
I’m curled up
It's still early morning
I feel like its been all day

Arms…
Arms?
Oh that's right
He’s here
With me

Here we go…

Hahaha!
Strap in!!

Every muscle…

Every muscle!!

Tight

Tighter!

The air is even thinner
I can’t breathe
He knows it
He's forcing me out of my ball of limbs

I can't look up
I hate this
I hate that he sees this
Im helpless

Minutes or hours
Its over
I survived
Again

Relax every muscle
One by one
The last muscle is my brain
Once I let this go I will fall

I used so much energy
I can’t keep my eyes open
I’m safe in his arms
It's over.
The mountain is gone
