Parrot
Matt Tennent Nov 2020
Gnarled boughs, old fig tree breaks the canopy
Mother bears fruit, bent roots give life for free

Echoes of distant howls pierce the slumber
Morning mist scattered like birds, I wonder

What iridescent flash catches his eye?
Sun-beaten neck arches up to the sky

Long weeks, leathered feet marching with promise
Of stately prince, monarch of the forest

His goal is near now, fables of beauty
have led this traveller to the fig tree

Proud prince observes from leafy branch up high
Ants in his kingdom, releases a sigh

Soars down to greet human small as a moth
Painted beak cracks open, and croaks "*******"
