Nucleus
Bazookio Dec 2014
When I was young I
thought the universe was small
so there I was, the nucleus,
the centre of it all.

As I grew I quickly learned the terrifying truth,
that there was more beyond the walls that held our weathered iron roof.
Then life became restricted to a handful of fleeting years,
to piece together meaning from a head full of ideas.

So lets go outside,
discover the world
There’s really no time to hide
beneath the covers my girl
To hell with the plan,
let’s just be young while we can

Floating back and forth between reality and dreams
Where anything is possible and not quite what it seems
As we attempt to recreate something so pure from what has been
We lament how much the worlds become so polluted and obscene

We fought so hard to have you not considering the cost
on more than one occasion felt that all our hope was lost
Then I witnessed an event that took me right back to the start
A picture on a screen of a tiny beating heart

So lets go outside,
discover the world
There’s really no time to hide
beneath the covers my girl
To hell with the plan,
let’s just be young while we can

Do dreamers ever dare to dream we all must say goodbye?
people just don’t care, it seems, so why the hell should I?
yet my silent trepidation tries to cling to every day
and the more it does, the more each slips away..

Late one night I held you, wide eyes surveying the room
Through space so vast, compared with the enclosure of the womb
Now I can’t wait to show you everything that lays beyond the door
your life is just beginning and there’s so much to explore

So lets go outside,
discover the world
There’s really no time to hide
beneath the covers my girl
To hell with the plan,
let’s just be young while we can

I have a friend
close to the end
he talks fantastically about all of the places he has been

His body tired
save for those eyes
which burn brighter than sun tracing an arch across the skies

He says 'Of all the things I know
of all the things I’ve learned...
anywhere you go
the good things must be earned.'

Safe and sound
both feet on the ground
he seems impervious to all the ******* going on around

and when he speaks
though often brief
you hear a man who knows the meaning of true happiness and grief

"How is it I work each day
when aching bones demand respite?
What makes me sit composing verse,
when others sleep into the night?"
(From 'The Worms that drive you')

His one life goal
just to share
the words that cause the sleepless nights, the ones that rattle round upstairs

And oh my soul
was bought to bare
by the words which where exactly what I didn’t want to hear...

"Have you wondered how tomorrow looks,
when you've lied about today?
Have you squandered opportunities
when you've refused to play?
Have you sought the possibilities?
or broken through the ruse?
Have you shed your limitations?
tried to fill some bigger shoes?
Does it all really matter…
that your world is locked within,
That the things which hold you back
are simply things you revel in?
That your greatest limitations
are the ones you self impose?
and the key which locks the door
is locked outside the door you close?"
(From 'Limitations')

"To loose the joy of purpose is
to loose the will to try
and when the spirit of endeavour's gone
the soul begins to die"
(Title unknown)

"Then the sun comes up with a glorious show
And the nuclear dust in the air is aglow
The rich and the famous are dead in their beds
and the ***** and the cockroaches nibble their heads"
(Title unknown)

I have a friend
when shuffling with the crowds
as everyone looks down he holds his head up in the clouds

And though dismayed
the time had gone so soon
as he walks amidst the chaos he hums a gentle tune…

"Who am I and what am I
and what have I to show?
And should I be concerned
that very few may care to know?"
(From 'Soliloquy')

"To look upon my megre works
as worthwhile in the scheme of things,
[Is] to nurture somewhere in the soul
the song which satisfaction sings"

"The hourglass
[will] reach the time
when all life’s frantic urgencies evaporate like wine"
(from '8')

though memories fade
words grow like seeds
taking root within the hearts and minds of anyone who heeds

"[I’ve] seen troubled waters pass me by
from torrent flow to pebble dry
From softly spoken words of love
where teardrops fall to pools of blood

So verily I say to you,
take heed my friend or feel the pain,
From one who knows the way of things
from one who sorts the chaff from grain
(From 'Rule of Chance')

Go outside and look around
the simple things in life abound
The wonder of the detail small
enthrals the mind and makes it all

It’s all before you spread about!
you make the choice YOU WORK IT OUT!
It’s all a state of mind you see
and it’s the simple things that set you free"
(From 'The Simple Things in Life')

This here is a wee ‘Ode to Marshall Gebbie’, Prolific Ninja Wordsmith; Family member; and friend.
Italicised words are particularly favourite sections of larger poems written by Marshall, which I have surgically removed and grafted amidst a few of my own meanderings.

Find a better way
Bazookio Dec 2014
I wake to find
An aching in the grey
My plans in disarray

My peace of mind
Shattered by the fray
A scene from yesterday

Callow and kind
Innocent and blind
Reason enough to stay

So far behind
Intention lost in time
Now too afraid to stray

Set me free - set me free
Set me free - set me free
been such a long time coming
I forgot that I've been running

Set me free - set me free
Set me free - set me free
I've no desire to stay
so i'm stepping out to find a better way

So sick and tired
Of all that is mundane
Numbing out my brain

Unable to explain
Confined to single lane
Borderline insane

I’ll shed my skin
stop sinking in the shame
of my alleged sin

so stretched and thin
can’t wait to leave
but where do I begin?

Set me free - set me free
Set me free - set me free
been such a long time coming
I forgot that I've been running

Set me free - set me free
Set me free - set me free
I've no desire to stay
so i'm stepping out to find a better way

A twinge of excitement, unfamiliar and queer
begins to escalate, and weaken my knees
I feel it spread beneath my bodies veneer
taking control like a delightful disease

Pretty soon I’m overcome by the feeling
of an electrifying sense of unease
with every sense within writhing and reeling
I get up and start to reach for my keys

My luck is changing, and its hard to explain
the little trickle is becoming a flood
I start to let go of the heartache and pain
The very thought begins to quicken my blood

No longer brittle, strong enough to spurn - my
loathsome memories evaporate fast
So with a smile upon my face I turn
and raise my finger in salute to the past

Set me free - set me free
Set me free - set me free
been such a long time coming
I forgot that I've been running

Set me free - set me free
Set me free - set me free
I've no desire to stay
so i'm stepping out to find a better way

would love to hear what you think.

Sung by the ridiculously enchanting voice of Kelly Baigent.
Bass strings plucked by the very fingers of Garreth Smith himself.

Birds eye view
Bazookio Dec 2014
Cauliflower Clouds..  weightless
Drift silently beneath me in the blue
And high above the world I notice
Up here I get a birds eye view

Far below the sighing city,
Stretches out its ageing bones
As evening falls upon the walls
of this concrete jungle, overgrown – thick with tangled fitful tones.

Oh
Where do you go
When your sitting in an airport
on your own?

So..
what do ya know?
When I find out what I’m here for
I’ll be home.

Houses standing proudly on a hillside
Are coveted by those who ride the train
And the humble homes they soon return to
Are dreamt of by those sleeping in the rain

Amidst a million conversations
A man stands high upon a crate
and begs the world to listen in
His message stern, his tone irate - “Beg for your sins, its not too late!”

Oh
Where do you go
When your sitting in an airport
on your own?

So..
what do ya know?
When I find out what I’m here for
I’ll be home.

If I could just sit still - hold a thought in my head
I could finish what I started – every word that I said
But the sounds of the city keep calling to me
and as long as I keep replying i'll never be free

I see buildings reach to the stars
And all the rainbow coloured cars
The hopes and cares of life are few
From up here I get a birds eye view

Oh
Where do you go
When your sitting in an airport
on your own?

So..
what do ya know?
When I find out what I’m here for
I’ll be home.
