"swinging" poems
I followed my dear friends to the edge of a cliff and was greeted by a peculiar thing. There, standing on the edge of the earth was a swing set waiting just for me. Her thick black seat and strong metal arms cradled me while together we flew into the starry night canvas, sprawling dark blue, except for a splatter of twinkling firefly-speckles, from the cityscape to the moon. Each time she lifted me I felt closer to the heavens. I raised my chin and let the gentle kiss of raindrops wash away my sins, cleansing and revitalizing my body like a baptism. I’ll never forget the smell of the rain on the freshly-sprouted grass, with dew drops made from the breath of my friends hanging delicately in the sweet air like glass beads strung on a wire while the crisp wind carried me higher and higher and the most brilliant masterpiece ever created was painted across the entire night sky.

Swinging in the Rain
Every year we have been witness to it: how the world descends into a rich mash, in order that it may resume. And therefore who would cry out to the petals on the ground to stay, knowing as we must, how the vivacity of what was is married to the vitality of what will be? I don't say it's easy, but what else will do if the love one claims to have for the world be true? So let us go on, cheerfully enough, this and every crisping day, though the sun be swinging east, and the ponds be cold and black, and the sweets of the year be doomed.

Mango Tears
Are you listening to the whispers? are you feeling scandalised? Harbouring ***** little feelings that you wanna sanitise? Walk through the swinging doors of a catholic franchise Ask em for that sailors knot a black-n-white man-ties To the pairs of prying eyes his practical rebuke Is a marital disguise and a tactical puke Throw the garter ‘mongst the pigeons, the voluntary victims... Whose single minds are filled with matrimonial conviction Paired up poets pool their miseries; the price of art Each miserable synergy - the sum of its parts Did he swear that he’d hold you ever dear to his heart? To love and to cherish til your knees did part? If she wants you like her father and you want her like your mother What the hell are you gonna do when you’re bored of one another? There she stands on ceremony all silk and sinew While the vow evicted from his Adam’s apple continues To stutter as the panic builds like stifled farts Til it splutters its devotions on her lady parts Her eyes sentence you to sit though your neck-hairs stand She’s the ****** ****** written in the lines on your palm Old scores squeeze sideways through her gritted teeth And he takes on the debt of every promise she believed Hide the love-bites in a polo-neck, your love life in a Rolodex When the ***** hand of happen-stance runs its evil down your keks Cos like the indelible digits on your bathroom mirror Love is for life until you dress it with liquor If she wants you like her father and you want her like your mother What the hell are you gonna do when you’re bored of one another? We are but experiments, seven billion shades of wrong The clever ones stay celibate, the others pass it on That’s an easy line to settle-on in present company Single-riders in the peloton to pick up the debris

#*Nightbird perches high beneath the shooting stars that dapple the bouquet     of sleepless peace ... his soft downy breast           has lent breath to the sweet April afterglow      heaving with song The mystical feathered troubadour's      swooning echo A melodic twilight serenade conjures a moonstruck metamorphosis, sprouting magical wings of flight;* rousing *a lonely heart's esprit      to fly away unfettered      in constellations of song How dare imaginings spilled from the big dipper enchant such an enrapturing magic spell? It's so far to fall from swinging on a star! It's so far beyond nearing crescent moon      when you wish upon a star   Thereupon struck by a bewitching bolt of starlight; Dropping asudden as a shooting-star!     Rolling like trailing thunder;         tucked and tumbling ―              somersaulting,            celestial rumbling blossoming with an unearthly joy A nascent winged heart splayed bare, soars upon cresting wind waves;     dreaming of that shapeless             w h o  o  o  o  s h ―          gathering beneath         ~ uplifting wings ~   Suddenly ― gliding freely,        winging gracefully   upon wafting star drift glitter; lilting lightly upon the arising cadence of nightingale's melodious fluted song Nightingale sings sweet April perfume beneath the star shed lamplight twinkle ... and it makes no difference if it's only a dream     if my heart had wings* imagined by:   Jesse Stillwater

Resilience
Who Am I? Well, I must be that ****** the one in the black hoodie ***** sweatpants and an uncombed eye, that's always wooly scratchy, bloodshot with searching for my stash spot, that ****** in your peripherals that you keep your eye on because he's not in a polo looking nice, talking "well-spoken" and not a threat to your beautiful lily-white daughter. Because I grew up fixing myself ramen noodles and lifting the welcome mat after school, I must also be that ****** whose father wasn't in the same house until he was age 13, and when I tell you that, you weren't expecting it because "you're not a racist." but you weren't surprised. You see, I must be that ****** a stand-in for all other ******* I must be that ****** who represents all ******* not because you are racist, but because I'm the only ****** you've met who doesn't talk like dis, y'know whatmsayin, and i talk like this, do you know what I'm saying? I must be that ****** In order for you to feel okay being around me I must be that ****** who goes to college does the right thing the white thing and gets a job a nice little house, a nice black wife with a nice new england clear dialect, (what I was trying to get at earlier is that ****** dialects, by their mere intonation, denote stupidity, right?) and doesn't say a word when his white friends make ****** jokes or talk in a ****** dialect mocking some Aunt Jemima they heard at Walmart. But, I also must be that ****** who doesn't step out of line and say "WHY IS IT THAT IN EVERY SINGLE ENGLISH CLASS WE READ ONLY TWO BLACK AUTHORS A SEMESTER, AND THAT'S ENOUGH, JUST ENOUGH TO KEEP THE ****** PARENTS HAPPY." And If I happen to be a ****** I, by all means, must not be that ****** who had a white girlfriend, and this girlfriend after dating a ****** tried to date a white guy she liked, and when she told him that she had dated, loved, and yes, ****** a ****** he had said back: "I can't believe you ****** a ****** Then again, I must be that ****** with the big swinging **** able to destroy a white girl's ****** with its pulverizing power. And, please, If I am going to be a ****** don't be the one who writes a poem about having to be that ****** because those kinds of ******* are being over-sensitive, those dashiki-wearing-motherfuckers who think "Da white man dis." and "Da white man dat." Because I am not one of those ******* descended from the first people on earth, your brother, not in the ****** way, but the familial, species way. Why am I even writing this, ****** isn't a main operative word anymore. Search and find ****** and replace with "Black Guy." That way it becomes a joke.

Sundays on the ranch are somethin', Just after morning chores are done, I head up to the house on a dead run, I've called the herd and put the buckets out, Fed the chickens, called the horse, "Old Son," Heard the rooster yammering at the rising sun; Old dog is baying loud to add some fun.... Meanwhile, at the house, The wife has rattled up the kids and lined em out, When I come in, they clear the bathroom out, So I can get a shave and morning shower, And off we'll head to church in half an hour. Or so we think.... It's then the neighbor calls to say our milk cow's swinging by, Bell clanking off-step time to her butter-churning udder, "She's headed north toward town!" he chortles mirth, "Maybe she wants to hear old Pastor Perth!" I mutter. All jokes aside, I hang the phone and grab my cap, We pile in the truck to try and get her back.... We have a chance if we can turn her 'round above the hill.... Why is it Sundays sweet Dolly becomes such a pill? A simple rule of nature I wish I could avoid, Is if a plan is put in place, as sure as Lloyd, Our Guernsey chooses then to go out on a spree, And Pastor Perth in town prays extra hard for me.

OCD is not all about remembering the freckles on her cheeks or telling her I love you repetitively OCD is waking up at 2 in the morning after you have spent hours trying to delude yourself into thinking that your hands are clean only to end up in your washroom trying to rub your skin off. (all because a stranger touched me on the sidewalk a month ago) OCD is being in an abusive relationship with yourself. Your logic won't let you give in, but like a desperate lover, your OCD won't let you go. So you keep swinging, tick tock, to and fro, like the broken clock in the store room you can't get yourself to throw out because it belonged to your nana. OCD is not finally finding a peace of moment when he looks at you but it is biting your teeth into your lips trying to hold in the cringe when he carelessly wipes his greasy hands on the napkin. "Don't complain, don't complain" you mutter to yourself as you throw a hand sanitiser his way. (please don't leave me) OCD is rearranging the pictures frame on the shelf for the fifteenth time a day because last time your brother interrupted you and so you might as well start again. OCD is the worry in your mum's eyes as she invites the guests to show them your room while she keeps throwing you cautious glances as someone touches your books. (I'm sorry, ma. I can't help it) OCD is reading the same line again and again, a part of  your brain asks you why since you got it right the first time. You don't know why, but you keep doing it just to be sure. Check the door if it's locked properly before sleeping. Once, twice, thrice till it's morning already and it's time to wake up. (another sleepless night, God **** it) OCD is all these fuzzy voices mixed around with the signals from your brain telling you that your life will fall apart, if, just for this once, you do anything different.

II Eyes I dare not meet in dreams In death’s dream kingdom These do not appear: There, the eyes are Sunlight on a broken column There, is a tree swinging And voices are In the wind’s singing More distant and more solemn Than a fading star. Let me be no nearer In death’s dream kingdom Let me also wear Such deliberate disguises Rat’s coat, crowskin, crossed staves In a field Behaving as the wind behaves No nearer— Not that final meeting In the twilight kingdom III This is the dead land This is cactus land Here the stone images Are raised, here they receive The supplication of a dead man’s hand Under the twinkle of a fading star. My poems idealize your tongue on my tongue your breath in mine, these verses will romanticize how we skipped from street to street our arms swinging between your left hip and my right like I did not think about how my parents never doubled their strength to pull me up above ground as we walked through parking lots. I needed to fly and no adult could let me but you. The sudden hurt, I have not yet dramatized that morning you returned my voicemail unsuspecting unknowing my intention to whisper I hate you I hate you I hate you. Every bone in my body had broken because we could not levitate any longer: you were not even strong enough to keep yourself grounded. I make you sound beautiful I make you sound ugly, but neither is real, just as how there are no words for the New Year ball dropping.

We fall, and hard, and in the shadows, ***** ourselves on snags, that tear our clothes; grazed and cut, we stagger on - Impressions, ideas, fancies! Of these have we been disabused. But is this spring, come again? Lovely, yesterday, in the bright sunlight, to see you, felt green hat in among the photo clouds, apple suedes on the gallery's dank floor. Melvyn,   and I, merrily circling with you the light cloud images, my nostrils full of pollen spikes. The pictures: wisps of trailing dreams churning in ‘scapes of infinite blue; dark clouds, in amongst them, too. Photographs in two time places caught; at once, all: the other and t'other. So excitement swells, and everything besides us quells, because the knowing of itself, knows, and dares beyond the frames; to skirt knowingly the unsaid; to want beyond the wounded past, to pull things, once again, inside out. In whimsy’s currents flow these thoughts, these feelings, these drives; swirling in eddies, so that as you sit, on a summer’s day, it moves, a mirror to everything above. The wavelets on the surface, hammered into shape, burn, bite and dazzle; the sun’s flames leaping and dancing on ripples. In the basement, on the concrete, your Y proneness shifts, releasing knees on black-clad thighs; two pendulums swinging, brushing; yawing metronomes in the cool, coolness of my desultory thoughts. Oh, what am I saying? Feelings like reveries walk along these silver lips straying languorously. These myths are too soon made, carried one to the next, one-on-one, until contained no longer, become new truths.

With the peak of spring in the month of May In the early hours of a pleasantly sunlit day Two kids sat cuddled on a swing Feeling as though they were taking on wing Swinging in the air, they began to sing Their sweet lay breaking the silence with its ring They kicked their legs in rising delight And felt like thistledowns ever so light Up and down on the swing was fun They closed their eyes on being face to face with the sun Felt the swish and sway of the buoyant air And knew the light tug of breeze on their curly hair As the air got caught in the frills of their frock Their eyes gleamed bright in delightful spark Imagining themselves to be astronauts in space, An ebullient excitement lit up their face From a raised angle, they saw the Earth in green folds lie Watched the surrounding hills standing awfully high Saw a small stream flowing as a slow moving train With trees lined up on its banks in unbroken chain Longingly I watched these children free of all worry and pain Also their aerial feats, not tainted by any melancholy stain How I miss these childhood days of innocent fun As my hours, towards the sunset, quickly run

Holi. The festival of colours?
I come from New Orleans where the swingers hook up with the singers, and the boxes have a person inside who speak to you through a thick horizontal slot in the door. You come from Minnesota where the most aggressive sentence is “Hi, how are you” and you’ve attended church every Sunday of your life, even though you don’t really believe in god. We came to the West to skate with the surfer junkies. But then the harbors got bombed and we moved out East to see the hipsters and the artists beggin on the streets. We went to the South with the racists and bigots were dying for a good show. We moved up North to escape from the 70s, and with the 80s on the rise we figured we’d best stay away. The 70s were rockin’ with **** and LSD in parks and concerts, and on benches on the streets. The smoke in the air was everywhere, from the slums in Wisconsin to the cities of Dallas. Even the poor were lost in the haze. When the 80s arrived with Rock ‘n’ Roll and techno beats from windowsills upstairs. The music was groovin’ and the ladies were fine. We saw billboards of our names in neon orange lights. The *** was replaced by coke, and the LSD with ****** singing and swinging with delight in our eyes. When the AIDS broke out we were sick in our beds listening to Pink Floyd and Elton John, and still we were singing. The 70s got us high while the 80s made us die We lived through wars in Vietnam, and Korea; we fought back the communists with red ink on our hands. We broke down the door into China and got them to arrive in the present and join the world. Although their chairman sits on a chair of lies he leads them with an angry fist in the air pumping “three cheers for Mao”. “Three cheers for Mao”. When the Soviets launched themselves to the moon we responded with our money and flashed our shiny new machinery in their faces. We marked our territory and claimed triumphantly that “We’re the best”. And we launched our war nukes and pinned them into intimidation. Then the Cubans sought revenge for the death of the Pigs on their Bay. With rifles in hand we stormed the beach and unearthed Castro and his regime. With our beds soaked in blood, and our dreams covered with fog, hand in hand we lay. We recalled the dances in the backs of old Cafes where the passwords were as simple as three quick knocks and two slow ones. We remembered the guns that pierced the heavenly chorus for the negros in the south. And we thought about the music of the 70s and the death in the 80s and I thought about you for a minute more.

We've been out here swinging for a while now tearing at your throat like there's no tomorrow And I've never been one to stand aside or stand in the way of change, but she's got us on one hell of a ride hanging over the sides now trying to get my bearings with my guard down standing over the edge now we've been playing both sides, don't let us hit the ground it'd be one too many if we went down tonight can't catch a break wondering is the timing ever right can't catch my breath but it's over now passing in phases like the last round the last scene before the grand finale dialogue caught in tatters like you've a mouth full of razor teeth touch my cheek kiss me only when you feel like it (we were there just last week) take this dose and space it out, I need my portions small like my dreams always on to the next faded scheme, it's okay though because my vision's 20/20 and I don't mind chasing the hard-to-get things.

T'was the night before Christmas And with everything done The kids were all dreaming Of Christmas Day fun The tree was completed We had wrapped all the toys When from the basement below We heard a faint noise I sprung from the couch Took off down the stairs On my way through the kitchen I tripped on two chairs I slid down the staircase To the base of my house And there with my shortbreads Was a ****** great mouse My wife followed close And then she let out a shriek She saw me and the mouse And she started to freak He nibbled the cookie and he ran past my nose right down my torso Then he stopped at my toes My wife was still screaming The mouse didn't care He continued his running On under the stairs I crawled to my workshop Grabbed the first thing I found A mallet for pounding That mouse in the ground I limped to the staircase And I swung at the wall I again lost my balance And again, I did fall I put two holes in the riser Two more in the tread I was gonna keep swinging Till that mouse was dead I broke the one lightbulb That lit up the room Now I was worried I couldn't see...found the broom I stepped on one end Squared my self in the sack I then heard a noise The mouse had come back I heard his slight skitter As he went past my feet He was off to the larder For more stuff to eat I went back to the workshop Tripping at least three more times I would finish this mouse He would pay for his crimes I grabbed for a lighter And my large propane torch I would hunt down this mouse And his **** I would scorch I lit up the propane And I aimed at the stairs It caught light on the carpet And I burnt both those chairs The flames went on upward The stairs were quite dry I laughed in hysterics That **** mouse would fry My wife had recovered And decided to run but, after seeing the flames She phoned up 9 1 1 The mouse left the building In fact, he never was found The house burned in seconds It collapsed to the ground And through the whole scene I just stood there and laughed At the wreckage before me And I thought, **** I'm daft I had ruined our Christmas And I burned down our house Over a **** shortbread cookie And one little mouse The kids, they got out And were wrapped up and warm While I was creating My own perfect storm The gifts were all ruined The house ...all consumed And over my head One large question loomed If I had gone for the shotgun And shot at the mouse Would I be still having Christmas And would I still have a house My wife came on over And she gave me a swat She said "look what you've done" "you great stupid **** I learned a great lesson and folks ...it is that Once I rebuild I will then buy a cat!!!

Monkey, Monkey : Part One
You are my December because you seem to emanate a golden glow, quite like of parols swinging from tall streetlamps December in how you brush through my hair like a cool, gentle breeze brought by the northeast wind of clear blue skies and fair weather. December also in the way you wrap your arms around me tightly, it reminds me of my favorite warm, woolly sweater that my dear grandma knitted for me. You are my December in how you light up my eyes like the Christmas lights that twinkle on the Christmas tree No, actually, more like the fireworks that set fire to the midnight sky on New Year's Eve December because you are a great gift like the secret surprises tucked under the Christmas tree you are a sweet treat like a gingerbread coated with colorful sugar, freshly baked and toasty you refresh me like the much needed break that lasts for two weeks You are my December because you leave me melting like the mini mallows sprinkled on my hot choco steaming You are my December because I love December
