"propped" poems
washed-up, on shore, the old yellow notebook out again I write from the bed as I did last year. will see the doctor, Monday. "yes, doctor, weak legs, vertigo, head- aches and my back hurts." "are you drinking?" he will ask. "are you getting your exercise, your vitamins?" I think that I am just ill with life, the same stale yet fluctuating factors. even at the track I watch the horses run by and it seems meaningless. I leave early after buying tickets on the remaining races. "taking off?" asks the motel clerk. "yes, it's boring," I tell him. "If you think it's boring out there," he tells me, "you oughta be back here." so here I am propped up against my pillows again just an old guy just an old writer with a yellow notebook. something is walking across the floor toward me. oh, it's just my cat this time.

Are You Drinking?
I want something that I cannot have. I cannot have it because I don't truly know what it is. I've seen it polished and propped as if it were on display and I've heard the stories of how much time and effort it took to make it look as such. But I want it. I want love. I want the idea of it at least. I want the fights brought about by events simpler and less important than the time we wasted to have them. I want to be pained by the sight of her pain and know that the feeling of knives piercing my chest when I see her cry is there because I would literally drive them there myself, if only to prevent her tears. I want our laughs to intertwine over the smallest things and our conversations to stretch our minds over the biggest. I want to see you sleep at night and I'll smile because I know that you're finally at peace. And I want you to smile when you wake up because you know that I'm fighting to make your reality better than your dreams. I want love. I want romantic love, I want crazy love. I want passion. I want to pick you up in my arms and in that brief present get lost in your presence. I want to be in you when I am in you and have you wish that I would stay forever. I want to be in your heart and mind, and I want our love to be torturous and blind. I just want love. I want the idea of it at least.

Maybe It Is Just An Idea
I remember the first time I watched the great Gatsby. Your legs propped on my own, Sailing in the land of happy dreams You slept. While I watched the most heartbreaking movie of the 2014. You never realised how much that movie meant. Never conceived how much Words and acts could drive a person It was at that moment As I watched Gatsby fall His dreams shattered and his heart ruined That I was hit with the reality. Last nights drunken actions were more Than just movements or simple words. To me atleast It all meant more Deep down inside Than you could ever have understood. And though you hardly ever mentioned The ongoings of that particular night, It stayed with me. And as Mr. Carraway spoke Those last tantalising words of love, I promised myself. One day I shall tell you. One day I shall have the courage Daisy never did. To admit once and for all, To the universe that I love you.

The GREAT Gatsby
sometimes i wonder if god keeps a record of all the times i have been left, all the times i have been unable to leave. i wonder if he thinks to himself, "when will she learn?" as if he feels my heartache too. i picture god with a furrowed brow, hunched over a typewriter, beginning me again and again, a mountain of crumpled paper at his feet. but somehow - he always ends up at the same point in the story where i am all ****** palms and half-hearted hallelujahs propped up on bruised knees. spitting up blood & teeth at his feet screaming, "IS THAT ALL YOU'VE GOT?" but he doesn't answer. and i catch myself wondering if the silence is his way of punishing me for making a deity out of you. after all, the bible says he is a jealous god. i could've sworn there was a verse somewhere that said you weren't allowed to love anyone other than me. but now that i think about it, i probably took it out of context. if i could add a parable to those already existing, it would be how your chest felt like church under my head, and how i thought to myself, "this is how it would be if he loved me back." or how you fled my bedroom like a crime scene. i am still bleeding. i won't tell you how many times i cracked my heart in half trying to be what you wanted. how my lips on your skin felt judas. now i am waiting for god to begin me once more, hoping he'll leave you out of the plot this time because i don't think i could stand to lose you again. see, rumor has it he knew you'd leave and has been trying to make it up to me since before we'd even met. my song is one of repentance. the wood finish from abandoned pews rotting under my fingernails. i made sacrifices you didn't ask for. i have never known whether my inability to abandon people is more a strength or a weakness but so far everyone i've ever loved has turned into an exit wound, and myself into a flickering no vacancy sign. - m.f.

the patron saint of painted smiles

All the Worlds A Stage
The glow of a city night comes in through my window And keeps awake my always-empty stomach and heart Night skies look sick with green And don't take well to light pollution Sleep doesn't come easy to someone so restless Though I need the fullness of oblivion now more than ever There is no right way to lay a restless head on a pillow To twist a hollow body under sheets That it will lie still in comfort Because emptiness folds painfully in on itself And I untwist, I unfold To accept defeat Propped on elbows, On a yellow legal pad in the yellow light I hold the sign of a night spent slowly: All forms of unhappiness are, on the inside, loneliness

light pollution
Amsterdam, Oh Amsterdam. The lingering bells of a multitude of bicycles. Clinging to the misty air. Carefree. Careless. Canal flows past. Upon which dances sunlight. A bundle of sparkles. It's early morning in-situation. The ladies of night, are still sat propped up sleepily. Looking like they're wide awake. The coffee shops seem to never quit,they never seem to sleep. Wake up and smell the coffee. Delft grinders shaped as windmills turn and grind. Oh to awaken in fair Amsterdam. (C) LIVVI

AMSTERDAM
When I was thirteen, I had a running coach. He was short, lean, and muscular. An Italian man with a whistle hanging around his neck, farmer's tan, and below his black widow's peak sat silver aviators, propped upon his shiny beak. I ran miles and miles a day, but, no matter how much I'd run he never followed. He always trusted me to stride my roads and lift my knees high during the kick at the end of the races against myself. "If you want to run you gotta drop that baggage," he'd laugh between sips from his water bottle as he towered over little me, panting and red. We both stood tall under the blazing sun. I couldn't comprehend exactly what he meant, I mean, I told him, "I have ultra-light, top-of-the-line shoes, compression shorts and athletic toes, a hairless chest for maximum speed, sweat running rivers down my spine, legs that never exhaust, and, above all, Coach, a spirit that can move mountains." His response, silence and a smirk. Who was he to teach me about running? "You're weighing yourself down boy, you gotta drop that baggage." It was his motto for me every time my time would increase, because, you see, when running, increase is bad. Except for hills. I can still hear his voice in my head, "Uphill, increase exertion." He never ran with me, he just told me to go. He showed me the route and I did as expected, six days a week, sometimes three miles, sometimes ten, day after day, again and again, shoulders hunched and me out of breath, "runners high," they called it. I hated running, I hated my coach, I didn't understand why anyone would want run to anywhere. Not now. Now, I love it. It has become my hobby, a specialty for when one grows up, your body is built for it, and your mind has been ready to run since junior high. It starts as a seedling, when you're barely able to walk, and by the time your cardiovascular system has been assaulted by packs of tobacco and rolled marijuana, it blooms green. That's when you realize: Running is easy. And coaching? Don't even get me started on how easy that is.

Alone, I sit with my feet propped in front of the flames. Heat pushes along the curve of my instep. Bug spray coats my legs and arms, stickier than sweat, which flows like raindrops down the back of my neck, pools in the valley between my ******* Even the air feels too warm in my lungs. Games and night walks do not appeal to me as I sit in stifling confinement without a cool breeze to whisper relief.  Suffering the fire pit’s front row seat wins over stretching my lips into insincere smiles, watching, but absent, while my friends talk of a life I try to forget. Snickers buzz up to my ears. I lean my head back as a whole pitcher showers me with arctic salvation.

Bonfire
I grew up in South Auckland, Takanini the only Pakeha in the caravan park, I learnt how to be tall, smart and skinny how to raise the end of my sentences in an arc. At school, we were told words held power; but for teachers words were flowers, and my friend Cruz had two brothers Harley and Davidson - they belonged to Black Power, their fists tattooed with something like “Smother”. But there was never violence on our street, gang was family; I usually never felt more at home around Bourbon, loud Reggae, bags of **** and men so manly they’d cry over love, and I wouldn’t get a word in. Though my Father votes National and thinks Michael Laws is right so moves us to Dunedin where it’s ninety percent white. I stopped reading Lenin and picked up Rousseau became a vegetarian, thought it was so cool you know, even wrote a blog that discussed rise from below. But I’ll never know below again until I’m drunk in an old shed at 3am on a school night singing along to Bob Marley in Maori, sunk deep into the mattress propped against the Harley, the one you and I would cruise on until dawn together as police took to the streets in riot gear - we’d get lost in the country and learn to smother our thoughts in starlight then stagger over, listen in to the darkness, and just slowly breathe the crisp, cool air of the kiwi tundra. They say New Zealand has two flags, but in the country, when you’re blazed on the benefit, ****** on the disdain for positive discrimination, you can pick out all the small bright koru unfurling in the stars.

The streets are clear, we're hydrophobic Hoods propped by hats and socks pulled high; The rain brings peace to the agoraphobic Puddles form moats and clouds fill the sky. Splash, droplets hit the window, chauffeured by the gale outside. Squint your eyes and flash back boats tilt starboard, with the tide. The captain shouts to the decks, paranoid 'Clear the decks and brace for impact' Without turbulence we are disenfranchised Boredom becomes us when we're boring. Shake it off and stare at the dot to dot the residual carving of water as it slides Another droplet falls beside it, parallel it aligns, growling thunder overhead. Without stirring we are robotic workforces Without awaking we are left inside The constructs created for us, by corporate- conglomerate elitist-psychopaths. Two drops of water on the window simmer red with burning anger. Crash lightening sears the sky Rage becomes you, girders melt. The starry night undercurrent, flings us backwards, never up, as democracies which seek to serve sink into a sea of stocks and shares, the wall street journal sits atop the captains lobby, economies were meant to tumble as the working classes fumble for bread, men in suits gaggle and toast to the millions they left for dead. Resistance is futile, when eighty-five of the richest suit owners sit on currency that was meant for the three point five billion who aren’t driven by gluttony.

Smell the watered lawn
i was there with the locked up free they stared straight through the bars at me the gate was open no one had to stay they spoke of church in exchange for food lights out with 50 smelly-ass bad moods i saw it superseded rude so, i walked down and ate the trash i had no church no shame no cash the garlic bread was free the sweet rolls weren't for me so, i walked back down to the dead-soul church to find a name i could besmirch with lust, debauch, an empty purse she told me she had her own room and bath we tried to pull one on the ***** said that we were legal hitched she asked for proof and I.D. we didn't have a thing that ended our sad little fling goody gumdrops ain't gonna get my ring grab my gear as i walk i sing i know the words to everything if i happen to forget i'll make up better ones you'll bet raised my sign and i raised my thumb hoped a car was gonna come sat there in the Yakima heat sign propped up next to my feet a nice redneck stopped and said "have a seat" he was welfare office bound i was just a broke road-hound waited for him in the shade told him jokes for smokes he made a good trade got dropped off at an angry sunning truck-stop flew my sign one eye out for cops a white guy in a small red car pulled up and said "i'll go that far" soon we broke down on the road i was sure my luck would soon implode instead we put our heads on think we woulda fixed the kitchen sink but waters last to beer when i drink we got some bolts and ******* 'em on before we knew it we were gone he got a smile i got this song then we hit Seattle like a **** nothins' right if ya don't know wrong NOTHINS' RIGHT IF YA DON'T KNOW WRONG

This morning as I walked along the lakeshore, I fell in love with a wren and later in the day with a mouse the cat had dropped under the dining room table. In the shadows of an autumn evening, I fell for a seamstress still at her machine in the tailor’s window, and later for a bowl of broth, steam rising like smoke from a naval battle. This is the best kind of love, I thought, without recompense, without gifts, or unkind words, without suspicion, or silence on the telephone. The love of the chestnut, the jazz cap and one hand on the wheel. No lust, no slam of the door – the love of the miniature orange tree, the clean white shirt, the hot evening shower, the highway that cuts across Florida. No waiting, no huffiness, or rancor – just a twinge every now and then for the wren who had built her nest on a low branch overhanging the water and for the dead mouse, still dressed in its light brown suit. But my heart is always propped up in a field on its tripod, ready for the next arrow. After I carried the mouse by the tail to a pile of leaves in the woods, I found myself standing at the bathroom sink gazing down affectionately at the soap, so patient and soluble, so at home in its pale green soap dish. I could feel myself falling again as I felt its turning in my wet hands and caught the scent of lavender and stone.

Aimless Love (by Billy Collins)
There is sickness. Subtle insecurity in the tallest tree. Pride in roots that try and wont break free. Stabbed propped up shadows behind the kindest smile trying the hardest. Men leaving nothing in death but souls. Cliche communications speaking in color. Gray paths never make sense. Never. And death is but not without life. There is sickness. Curving straight lines trying to make a point.

Severed Worm
Our houses, spitting-distance close Feet propped on railing cold beer with fresh lime watching robins flung in flocks to the failing of August Too close-- Really? John, on his cell is fu_king the world again from his garage Why not-- squeeze in pool or a dog Lawn mowers and **** whips tune in to whine late Friday afternoon 'bout dinner time Clinking silver, scrapes of plates Running water for suds through open windows to the thunk of pots Doors bang behind on pathway to garbage or joint in the woods wafting over all wordless squeals of delight from autistic child Meanwhile, the odor of nail polish removes all doubts of-- --Gawd! lodging low and toxic as the sun dissolves orange in its acetone setting Kids playing Man Hunt as darkness falls Leaping hedges, slamming gates No yards can contain these kinetics restless legs, furtive minds Muttering wind chimes from four different porches above the drone of highway a half mile yawns Pieces of talk flipping the crickets over-- Why or who or at what time? Other-worldly glow from The Mall dims stars outlines mountains brightens the horizon behind Mosquitoes coming in for a landing

Spitting Distance
This was written by a friend if mine on poetfreak,but unfortunately the website has been shutdown. :-| PART ONE: She sat in the back, Her head in a book Oblivious to us, and our curious looks. She wore dark blue headphones plugged into her phone elbows propped on the desk that wasn't her own. Her hair was bright purple it was really a sight I had never seen hair, so purple or bright. The room filled with whispers 'till the teacher walked in. We all quickly went silent, waited for class to begin. He talked about integers but I didn't care. For my only focus, was on her, and her hair. PART TWO: Class soon finished, with the sound of the bell. We all got up to leave, she got up as well. She grabbed her bag, and marked a page in her book then she left the classroom, without another look. I could see her in the hall of course she stood out. there weren't too many kids, with purple hair about. But then she was gone, she'd walked through a door. and I was left staring at where she'd stood just before. I wanted to follow her, but I didn't dare. I'd grown far too curious of that girl and her hair. PART THREE: School became exciting it was never a bore for now there was a girl who wasn't there before. I woke every morning desperate for a look at that purple haired girl, reading one of her books. I almost talked to her once, but my courage soon passed so I settled for seeing her in Mr. Loo's class. Where every now and then, I could get in a quick stare at that beautiful girl and her beautiful hair. PART FOUR: We talked about her, my friends and me. About the purple haired girl and who she might be. She was a mystery to us, turned our grade upside down. And yet I was happy the girl was around. Soon it all went back to normal and they all no longer cared about that mysterious girl and her mysterious hair. PART FIVE: November flew by, then winter break came. and still I didn't even know that girl's name. But I knew her face, and I knew green eyes. I knew there was a real girl, behind that purple disguise. I knew all her classes. I knew she walked home. I knew she didn't talk to anyone, she was always alone. I knew she was pretty, in a purple-haired way. And I knew she was always the best part of my day. And above all I knew, I could no longer just look at the purple-haired girl as she looked at some book. So that first day back, I got out of my chair and walked up to the girl, with the bright purple hair.

For my only focus, was on her, and her hair. PART TWO: Class soon finished, with the sound of the bell. We all got up to leave, she got up as well. She grabbed her bag, and marked a page in her book then she left the classroom, without another look. I could see her in the hall of course she stood out. there weren't too many kids, with purple hair about. But then she was gone, she'd walked through a door. and I was left staring at where she'd stood just before. I wanted to follow her, but I didn't dare. I'd grown far too curious of that girl and her hair. PART THREE: School became exciting it was never a bore for now there was a girl who wasn't there before. I woke every morning desperate for a look at that purple haired girl, reading one of her books. I almost talked to her once, but my courage soon passed so I settled for seeing her in Mr. Loo's class. Where every now and then, I could get in a quick stare at that beautiful girl and her beautiful hair. PART FOUR: We talked about her, my friends and me. About the purple haired girl and who she might be. She was a mystery to us, turned our grade upside down. And yet I was happy the girl was around. Soon it all went back to normal and they all no longer cared about that mysterious girl and her mysterious hair. PART FIVE: November flew by, then winter break came. and still I didn't even know that girl's name. But I knew her face, and I knew green eyes. I knew there was a real girl, behind that purple disguise. I knew all her classes. I knew she walked home. I knew she didn't talk to anyone, she was always alone. I knew she was pretty, in a purple-haired way. And I knew she was always the best part of my day. And above all I knew, I could no longer just look at the purple-haired girl as she looked at some book. So that first day back, I got out of my chair and walked up to the girl, with the bright purple hair.

I am unsure of the geology of where you’re from. I expect there exists shelves and sheaths pale grey-yellow like serum in the blood and rocks resembling sun-weathered lobster carapaces. all of this enclosed by a festoon of green pine— its regalia cut sonic and naked wrung and wrung again by august. on the edge a cabin is hemmed on the skirt of ocean— spikes of molding logs propped and resting akimbo. a wave comes in. a wave goes out. a wave stays to shake your hand. introduces itself as sensate verge and wonderment. home. I can only imagine what it is for you.

I offer you this innocence, come on in, condemnation judgement vitriol are left on the other side of the walls of skin. Hearts may open here tears may tumble walls may fall in this moment between you and me. We will offer truths and tenderness for every imagined sin. Life's a puzzle the pieces are in earthquake shambles scattered across the floor. There are places for each puzzle piece to put together, we may even find bliss. Sometimes this life is too complex too hard to fathom too easy to plummet, we all need a place to explore unload forgive. This is the innocence feel free to come on in, your secrets are safe here, never told by me. It has been said we are as sick as our secrets, burrowing through our eyes in dark packets of disguise. But in this sanctuary lies dissolve innocence returns, We find a chance to begin again. Put down the masks Put down the resentments Put down the propped up sorrows Our truths will set us free. The door is open the glowing warmth of connection is at your disposal, come speak to me the accumulated hurts of where you have been, through these true confessions hurts pass not forgotten but forgiven. We can begin again. The puzzle pieces lost will be found, compassion and forgiveness become our friends. Abandon all pasts seen through a child's eyes, in this time of now we can become cozy snuggle up in this warm bath embrace. Sometimes we all need a place to hide in all the necessary pillows and comforters. Either in words or in silence, we'll find that spot of transformation, begin again, once you enter this innocence, from the tangle as birds well know, we can fly free again.

I travelled straight west to the epicentre of the southern wastelands and 'twas with mind-numbing disbelief that I found an Oak table propped upon the sands and it was not alone either for three beings sat it, seemingly nonplussed - one was a skinny old man wearing a linen suit faded and powdered with dust his collar frayed around the edges a moth-eaten hat sat upon his head, he had a daisy poking from his breast pocket so very much preserved, so very much dead, to his left sat a one-eyed Hare the sole eye ecstatic and wiggling - he swore and blasphemed each time the man spoke from a mouth toothless and dribbling, sat to the right of the man was absolutely (absolutely!) nothing, however I observed with mild humour that both man and Hare were convinced it must be something for the man was profusely adamant scorning the Something for dissing the Hare's hair, although the Hare was too busy rolling around its one eye to even notice the man, or simply give a fu- care "Hey hey talk to I! Hath thou seen my missing eye?!" Hare asked from a voice shrieky and shattered saliva running in rivets upon the table it slopped and slavered - then suddenly the man started singing encore his voice cringe-worthy, out of tune, sounding like a cat back-broke and on steroids rocking and waving like a spastic-loon; "If Father Time has no end, does he even have a beginning - oh, if there's pain is there gain, which one of us is it that's winning?" alas, that's when my attention was brought to the mounds of surgical needles cluttered on the ground, feeling sickly aura lick the back of my throat I started backing away without a sound ["Hey hey talk to I -"] ["If there's pain is there gain -"] ["Hath thou seen my missing Missing MISSING EYE?!!"] #FLASH!# the dystopian landscape around me melted into a field of bloated poppies - serene, scarlet and blinding 'neath the sun, feasting upon our charred bodies. I've watched him beat you day after day I've heard you cry yourself to sleep night after night I've heard his false words he doesn't love. You defend yourself to no avail alcohol's too much He's really confused *** he is lost. I've seen it all babe, it's not over there's nothing I can do I am only plastic wrapped in silk only for you. I've seen the blood you let stain your wrists I've felt the chill in the air when he's around but I've been there too, it'll be okay. I'd stop it myself but I'm merely a doll propped up on a shelf.

You lie there on your side. Slightly out of breath. Your face is propped up on your hand. A slight smile is on your face, The remnant Of some dumb joke   I've told. I love to make you smile I lie opposite you. A perfect mirror of you. I reach out and sloooowly, (Almost imperceptibly) I trace one finger along the enticing, promising curve of your hip. Letting it trail up your skin, Soft as a babies breath. You close your eyes and shiver (Almost imperceptibly)... Your breathing hitches (Almost imperceptibly), but I catch it. Dangerous Curves
Tonight, I cannot sleep because I am too hot. My face shines like wax With sweat and oil And the heat is like wet jellyfish in my clothes And I must *** so I get Up and when I see the dark me-creature in the mirror I think of myself not as human But blood and bones and fat and meat. Just a biological fleshpile. Chalk and butter and copper juice and pink slime hamburger. I won’t turn on the light because I Like to pretend to be blind when it’s dark. I pretend that blackness is just water to swim through And I feel my way to the can. I leak yellow And think of hospital catheters And how I’m just a bag of warring fluids Propped up on sticks. I get up and vertigo swirls my brains With an egg beater on low Until my inner ear is quite confused And I go whump on the sharp tiles like a dropped onion. Before I flip the light switch, All I can get through my greasy three-pound brain is "Maybe it'll need an X-ray." I slaughter And mangle myself in this manner Every five minutes. All night. I don’t want to be a thing that dies.

Auto-Butcher
i am lying on my stomach after having spent hours propped up on my elbows spent hours reading, sunbathing spent hours getting drunk and tired in the sun i am outside our new chicago home in a courtyard belonging to only us i am sprawled on the transparent blue plastic of my past the cerulean beach chair that never made it to a single beach. its plastic wound and woven around the metal like nothing i’ve ever seen before and i fall asleep and i’m awakened by the raindrops on the low of my bare back but it is not raining and i wake up naked, inside, in your arms as you tap out a tune on me and the blue chair that we put in the shower when my brother was too weak to stand because my brother was too weak to stand is nowhere to be found even when he went to live in the hospital that chair gathered rust in a closed, dripping shower we threw it out it reminded us of a hard time he was our only surviving souvenir   i miss the chair and i miss the person he was before it all before he gathered all this rust
