"neanderthal" poems
We are the kids – beautiful blank canvasses ready to receive the joy of life. We are the kids – hope & love consuming our souls, grasping at the shiny & new. We are the kids who played in the fields and danced in the sun. We are the kids with innocence in our hearts and a cheekiness in our soul. We are the kids who believed in a benevolent God and the generous teachings of Jesus. We are the kids whose imagination was an infinite resource - bounteous, diverse and effervescent. We are the kids who reveled in the fancy, the nonsensical, the romantic and the wild. We are the kids that couldn’t wait to grow up, We are the kids who believed in our future. We are the kids who never saw it coming. We are the kids who lost our innocence as soon we walked through the big school gates for the 1st time. We are the kids who were told to “think of your future” and to suppress creativity. We are the kids who were forced to grow up very quickly. We are the kids who didn’t know we were “different” but there were plenty out there who did. We are the kids who had to pretend to be what “they” wanted us to be just to survive. We are the kids who came home with scars every day – both physical and emotional We are the kids who endured the obscene words of Neanderthal hate every single day. We are the kids who were screamed at by our parents to fight back even when we really didn’t have the capability to do so. We are the kids who were told crying was a sign of weakness. We are the kids whose so-called classmates stayed silent when they did their worst. We are the kids where the school gates were no barrier to their lynching. We are the kids who turned quickly from being wide-eyed & hopeful to being terrified & desolate. We are the kids who dreaded every single weekday from first term to last.   We are the kids who fruitlessly prayed to a God who had deserted them. We are the kids taught by teachers who were found wanting. We are the kids who suffocated in sheer hate. We are the kids who took our own lives or at least tried to. We are the kids who self-harmed. We are the kids who sometimes never came home. We are the kids who survived but never really left the school yard behind We are the kids. Your kids. June 11, 2018.

I am the entourage Of a fantastic mirage I am the agent Of my mind's figment I am a believer Of mythical creatures I am a builder Of splendid architecture I am a drunkard Tripping on futures so absurd I plan construction Of my own destruction I am the feeder To dreams of grandeur I am a magician Of wild, potent concoctions I am a tycoon Of emotional typhoons I am an adept Skilled in exploiting concepts I am a parasite Brandishing fangs that bite I play host To a monstrous, hideous ghost I am an addict Of thoughts derelict I am the dreamer Incapable of anything lesser I am a diver Sinking deeper and deeper I am an insatiable thief Claiming trophies without grief I am an emotional hermit Hoarding my all in a bottomless pit I am a weaver Fabricating tales that meander I am a Neanderthal Adopting behaviours and habits that appall I am an ape Mending wounds that gape I am but me I'm blind, fighting to see I am rhymesmith I lie through my teeth Getting hard to breathe Heart to words, I seethe...

Me
In my mind, I raced against time I smoked peyote with the Apache I chased Kangaroos Through the bush with the Aborigine All the while ...I searched for the power within me In my mind, I outpaced time I drew cave art with the Neanderthal I climbed to the top of the mountain with the Sherpa I hunted seal out on the frozen tundra with the Inuit All the while ...I searched for the power within me In my mind, I eclipsed time I wrote poetry while under the tutelage of Langston Hughes And I created visual greatness while apprentice to Gordon Parks I even stood on the wall with Che' Guevara, like a Sentry standing watch All the while ...I continued searching for the power within me In my mind, I turned to face time I wrote an addendum to the Emancipation Proclamation And I saw the ugly truths Of freedom's farcical Declaration All the while ...I continued searching for the power within me In my mind, I embraced time I sought to free my nation from the pandemic perils of ******* And I prayed that we Americans would be free of The snares of racial and economic divide that still has us chained I did this while searching for truth, in this, our most tenuous hour ...then empyreally, God reached for me, touching me, and I finally found my power * Reprinted from 'Exegesis a Decade of Poetry by Mekael' © July 14, 2009 by Mekael Shane

My Power
In times gone by, now recondite, Neanderthal, ***** upright, spoke softly, tones so lily-white, and tried to put the world aright. He taught us how the flame ignites that wearing furs will warm the nights, just why the rolling wheel excites, and how the beveled flint stone bites. Before the days of dynamite he fought his foes with spit and spite, and swung big sticks with all his might, and rendered death with stones in flight. Engaged in never-ending fight (arenas were a global sight) he forced his forces to unite to sate his oily appetite. To quell rude thoughts that may incite he ruled the realm with fly-by-nights and culled the winds of words in flight, and darkened minds to anthracite. With fairy tales of evil sprites and how the fist of freedom smites, he washed the world with flames alight to vanquish hoards of parasites. Each dawn the damage brought delight, the foe was bent, a bit contrite… yet battled on with no respite until the dusk and evening light. Encamped beside the firelight Neanderthal, that shiny Knight, awaited morn while sitting tight assured the end would be alright. Yes, conquest seemed his sacred right… Forevermore?… well, no, not quite… Neanderthal's extinct tonight and lies beside the Trilobite… MORAL The Oreo is round, not bright: while rolling near the candlelight at first the searing seemed so slight, the molten cream an oversight…

I got my philosophies ready to go And all I want is for you to know Let me tell you what's wrong with you And why you need to change the things you do What is that you've got in your mouth? I thought we left those ideals in the south A perfect platter tastes so natural And perfect laughter sounds so beautiful I'll meet you in uptown, baby The place downtown goes crazy You made a joke without warning me You need to know that you offended me I hope you're happy, you Neanderthal Hopped up on commercialism and Adderall Do you wanna know what my talent is? It's telling you how the end begins I'm not a prophet, I don't believe in one But you're gonna pray to me when I'm done

Acerbic antagonist alliterates agonizing accusations, blasting ******* backbiter butting beautiful bombastic brainy blond bomb. Cumulative cranial casualties cease caveman's cognitive coherence. Doom digger derides Daddy's dangling dire dreary **** Eclectic esoteric eccentric egotistical estranger; Forthcoming fathoms fetch faithless fleeting father. God given goblins gather gossamer ganglions; Hell's hairy harlot harpies hover heeding Hyperion. Ignatius imbibes irrevocably insisting, "Jesus juggles justice's joy jarring jams." Kindness kindles Kilimanjaro; Malicious mountains melt, Mmm, morning marjoram. Nothing negates Neanderthal ninnying. Overt obsessions obfuscate original object of purest passions, paltry past pinings, quickly quieted, quelled, resisted, relinquished, readily, ruefully, roundly saturated, suffocated; surreptitiously silenced, terribly torturing the thrashed tamed tormentor: Ugly, ungrateful, unapologetic, Vanity, woefully wallowing, wailing, "Where's Xanadu's zeitgeist!?"

Walking, always walking, Puzzled youth being funneled like cattle, Seek shelter from the sun, Jeer and poke at each other, All from the safety of their cell phones. Constantly seeking that one undesired retention Of jukebox explosion catapults. Thrusting us deeper into the mind/brain paradox What is this? What are these strange mutterings in the dark? Babysitting wasp nests by electro shock railroads, Disgust in the face of the many. Where is this golden eclipse we’re all waiting for? How can I not see the spiders on my windowsill? Are these anguished, infantile youth truly desired? Aggravated Neanderthal men Try to impress pulsating goddesses of Light, All to no prevail. Sickening feeling in the gut, Why aren’t you here? Well I suppose, Things have changed. The Empress of the tunnel Seeks out the empire halls Of the tunnel-bound angst, Musicians in the hall strumming There thoughtless musings, While the the debutantes watch and listen. The intensity is unbearable to them, They must seek shelter in their ipods. Milk, must have it. Watching them creep through the cafe, May they one day find what they’re seeking. Where are they? Sitting here by myself, Look at them jeering at each other In their own jargons. Have they seeked out the pleasure of life? Dream-like meditations, Well-rounded views of life, Happiness within. Dumbly smile at each other, Seeking closeness, Mind/body consciousness

This will be the best poem I will ever write. Who's to say if it will be my last, but one thing it is not is a first attempt at finding the right words to convey to you. And finding the right words has never been a challenge for me, but ********* if you aren't giving me a run for my money presently, insufferable me with bleeding tongue resentfully. I say that word with an intrepid disposition, because I do not resent the person, but the action: The act of unwarranted silence. I'd like to think you have a limpid conscience of the beautiful woman you are, at peace with yourself, when at the present time you are consumed with future maybes and counting seconds. So maybe adding myself to your equation was selfish, and brought complications when thinking about anything linear, considering all of the variables. There was only intention to rhapsodize the zealot I met on a mutual wavelength, a double helix we all share that some of us forget about, yet here is the reversion, the Neanderthal, the ******* who grew a beard to expose himself, looking at this whole experience all wrong. Instead, there is Royal Purple Prose to look as extravagant as you are stunning. Now all that's left is cognitive dissonance to later become addictive retribution.

Cognitive Disillusionment
I haven't written anything in over a year. My chest has risen and fallen with the track of the sun, like a neanderthal burial covered in flowers. I have wept for myself, I have wept for my friends, I have wept for my grandfather now in my lungs and in the soil, but still I haven't written anything in over a year. I went to the zoo one last time with my confidant, rode up the long elevator so steep I would fall off with a sneeze. I have felt the last rays of sun before winter, I have felt ice on my eyelashes, I have felt the length of winter, stretching out into eternity, stretching out way beyond what I can touch, but still I could not bring myself to carry a pen. I have heard a phone call I've dreaded my whole life, the stony silence of a room full of bad news when the ice cream clutched in my bird bone hands hit the ground. I have met the ground and the hard concrete, I have met death sitting on top of a cherry tree, I have met a woman calling herself my Nana but half of her is dead, And I guess I wasn't brave enough to grab a pen. And I wasn't brave enough to see my grandfather in the casket. I never saw the wreath of flowers, I never saw his wedding photo propped up in the corner of his little bed, I never saw his chest move and move no more, with the track of the sun, like a neanderthal burial, covered in flowers but I did see the room full of people when I gave a eulogy and I heard the lie I told that this wasn't an unfinished story, and I feel death and grim upon me like ancient flower pollen fossilized in awful crystals on my bones. And maybe that is why I have been too scared to write for over a year.

Mirror mirror on the wall please tell me that I have it all. Mirror mirror on the wall help me look like a doll. Mirror mirror on the wall tell me that he doesn't hit me at all. Mirror mirror on the wall what just happened I cannot recall? Mirror mirror on the wall he loves me it's just the alcohol. Mirror mirror on the wall he doesn't love I am  a neanderthal. Mirror mirror on the wall I must leave by nightfall. Mirror mirror on the wall if people ask I just had a fall. Mirror mirror on the wall hurry and call the cops before it's my last fall. Mirror mirror on the wall the person looking back has no power at all.

They speak loudly and in generalities. In truth, had they been born 10,000 years earlier, Neither one would have given the other fire. A forehead like a Neanderthal's And a spine full of steel walk into a bar. "I'll have a Guinness and a mop," sayeth the spine.

Chest Beating
The Tie is a bib for men. For different sorts of messes. No longer exclusively dribble and bile. Yes, we may use them for mornings after our red solo sippy cups time machine us neanderthal. But men also have other messes to bib tie. Like: friendly faces at work. not friendly faces at work. faces on ex's at work. Ex's faces on not friendly faces and other various places at work. Men bib tie their feelings. Or at least that's the media stressed norm. Men can also not bib tie their feelings Or bib tie the wrong feelings. bib tie love when it's wrong to feel it. Bib tie love when it hurts to feel it. Bib tie their opinions when speaking to people who disagree Bib tie the need to look, only... Touch, just... Grab, just Have, just Use, just.... Put it in the bib tie. Stuff it right in there. That's where all your messes go now. At a funeral, men do not use their bib Tie as Hankie They let their tears fall. Bib ties are not tissues. You do not simply wipe up your mess with a bib tie. Put the pain inside it At the end of the day You take it off. Put the used up bib tie in patchwork briefcase under bed. Passed down by fathers. Full of generations of used up bib ties. Like ***** dream catchers. Knotted hands and looped desire. fastened snuggly into their folds. If only more men wore Ties.

Pompous Neanderthal
I was there before the beginning Before the conception of time and space, when nothing was everything and everything was nothing. In vain I waited for you to materialize from the ether of emptiness But you never came. So there I stood, waiting... I was there at the beginning At the conception of time and space when everthing came from nothing. I saw the sun, or that condescent swirling cloud of dust that was to be the sun. I saw the earth, a miniscule ball of molten, boiling, writhing anger I was there when everything, but you emerged from nothing. So there I stood, waiting... I was there at the edge of an undulating mass of the pimordial ooze, that sea of everything and nothing. I saw pleaseasaur ribbon its long, shiny, black body through the fathomless depths of the sea Searching, as was I, for something. I saw stegasaur, that lumbering hulk of muscle and scale take its first precarious steps onto land looking, as was I, for something. Every creature, but one-the one I wanted, stepped forth from that roiling soup. But you never came. So there I stood, waiting... I was there when neanderthal first discovered fire. I saw that temptress dance across the contours of his rough, wind hewn face. I saw his eyes sparkle as he and I gazed longingly into the yellow, red dancer's lair. Both searching for something or someone. I stared and stared hoping to catch the slightest glimmer of your eyes. But you never came. so there I stood, waiting... I was there when Egypt and Rome first peeped their heads from the cold ground surrounding their feet. I was there as those stone goliaths, pyramids, grew block by block layer by layer stretching, reaching, longing for heaven's basement. Just as I longed for you. I saw Rome's aquaducts, seemingly endless terracota snakes, slicing through the eons blindly feeling for something. Just as I searched for you hoping you were searching for me. But you never came. So there I stood, waiting... I was there when we almost killed the human race, for the second time. I stood at the entrance to Auschwitz scanning the multitude of worn, sullen, destitute face hoping, praying you weren't there. Thank God you weren't there. So there I stood, waiting... I am here. In a cold place made of lifeless, emotionless steal and glass. I watched as heartless obelisks devoured the cozy bricks of ancient neighborhoods. Signaling the undaunted march of father time. His harried pace, defies his antiquated frame, drains my fortitude. but step for step night and day day in and day out I will wait for you. So here I stand, waiting...

…i have learned my lesson / One should not give the impression / of being too happy / as you don’t do happy / you and angry / are comfortable / misery / your longtime friend / but with happy / you are unacquainted / and / too much joviality / for too long a period / puts the proverbial underpants in a bunch / too much free-range fondling / and unnecessary emotion / is a commotion / that puts the Neanderthal in you / into uncharted territory / off the clear and obvious path / with a virtual stick / banging the bushes of my spirit / waiting to see what emerges / and surprisingly / you are surprised / that what emerges is / seldom what you expect / but what do you expect? / That i will continually ride this / histrionic rollercoaster? / apprehensively peaking hills? / uncertainly braving valleys? / stop the maniacal ups and downs i think i want to get off / on you / and with you / but that just wont do / cuz you / fail to realize / that I am / percolating and oozing / straight inundated with / sweetness / and to get the full overflow / of said sweetness / is a privilege… / and not a right… / therefore / to the benefit of no one / and as a consequence of your / vacillation and inconstancy / i have made the determination / to Cap this most fundamental Well / sadly / i have learned my lesson…

Wake Up Call
Ruler of wind Bloodied shadow in the sun Rotting in the sea Buried in the sand Apex of predators Now bones of Jasper Gaping jaws Silent under skylight Tusk and tooth Fire and hearth Spirit of an animal Shade of a neanderthal

Chronus & Ananke
1. There once was a couple of cats Who engaged in continuous spats.           The result was a tie           When each scratched out an eye – An old-Biblical *** for a tat! The cats awoke bleeding and weak And half-seeing the havoc they'd wreaked           They discarded their clothes,           Their backsides to expose – A new-Biblical turning of cheek! 2. There once was a man, oh so brave, Who would sleep in a hole, called a grave ...           Well, he being the host           To so many a ghost, He arranged a big bash, called a rave 3. In days of Neanderthal knaves When the men ruled like kings in their caves           And not being too keen           About keeping them clean ... Often took on some wives, called them slaves 4. There once was a man with a stave Overseeing a holy enclave ...           Well, maintaining a grin           While absolving the sin, He assessed wicked tales and forgave 5. There once was a monk with a wave Who desired a head with a shave ...           Well, the barber was such           That she cut back too much Thereby leaving his globus concave 6. There once was a man in the nave, Although pious he could not behave ...           But they paid him no mind,           ’Cause his name was maligned, Being simply a sinner to save 7. There once was a man quite depraved A voluptuous life was thus craved ...           Well, continuous sin           Ended doing him in – On his tombstone they carved ‘Misbehaved’ 8. Antoine is a Vampire Ghoul, Quite barbaric, bloodthirsty and cruel,           With a fang in your throat           He’ll **** slowly and gloat With a smile as you whimper and mewl. 9. There once was a raven haired Shrink Who had orange Juice Tequilas to drink.           Well her scarlet souled Beau           ****** her tinted red Toe And she paled when he tickled her Pink. 10. There once was a travelling sage Who yet lived to a very old age.           Well, becoming quite senile,           With problems (yes, ****** He packed his wee trunk in a rage. 11. There once was a Nun and a Druid Exchanging some ****** fluid,           When along strode the Father           Who heard all the bother, Lost stickum while coming  unglu..ed.

Could it be that locked in memory Ancient thoughts are held in store, Passed on by Neanderthal man Who's origins we may recall..... Ape like in physique and frame, Prominent prognathus jaw, Burning eyes intense and sharp, Intelligence to seek for more. Telepathic thought transference Little need for guttural grunt, Massive strength in hand and thigh Stinking pelt to back and front. Rushing through the reed and long grass Casting lance with lunging throw, Mastodon with roaring bellow Thrashing trunk with thunderous blow. Darkness in the smoky cavern Clustered at the flinted flame, Family and others warming Squat encircled, chewing game. Listening in the chill of moonlight Listening to the wolf pack howl, Out across the snow clad forest Out beyond the hooting owl. Chewing pelts to soften leather Massive teeth in massive jaw, Wary eyes observe the weather Southern winds may bring the thaw. Luscious she with scent ascending, Luscious she with hairy maw, Bent to me in sweet surrender Downy hip and coaxing paw. Roar in rage and beat the earth Blazing eyes and heaving chest, Invasion from the **** Sapiens Seeking females for their nest. Skies descend with fire and brimstone Rock cascades and burns the earth, Mountain God has vent his fury Scamper hard to cave’s safe berth. Cold, so cold this bleak snow weather No retreat from Winter’s ire Brother, sisters, sons are huddled Frozen dead in blue ice byre. Few, so few now to migration Trek to southern food and heat, Starving, wet and hypothermic Staggeringly trudge the weak. Few, so few to intermingle With the **** Sapiens here, Serfs in ******* low and squalid BUT SURVIVORS..STRONG AND CLEAR! Marshalg Victoria Park Tunnel 13 August 2011
