"dachshunds" poems
The dog.
How I miss him,
the snuggle parties, when WE lived together.
Black Hole puppy eyes,
howling to share those skeletons,
If dogs could talk,
---huh.
Midnight velvet coat,
chard's of glass when brushed the wrong way.
Would loose this phone number...
but it's that dog...ya know?
The dog I miss,
grocery store trips,
welcome home kiss,
and good night pets.
The way, my daughter loved him too.
Proud to play mommy to your four legged son,
no smile greater, than her smile those days, caused by purpose and warmth.
The simple joy of a child giving a dog a treat.
The simple joy.
This feeling. Can't beat.
That dog ain't going to make it,
just like us.
Just the dog. I miss.
His ground shaking roar,
-he sure is the best guard dog, even if the size of a mouse-
mixed with laughter in the morning.
The way he almost made you look human, when he got sick and you'd cry.
At the next party, stories pour out of their round happy faces,
of their Chihuahuas, Pit-bulls, Dachshunds.
Staring into the Coriolis of my beer, lost like these months,
look up and say "I had a dog once.."

Their names are:
Katie, Bobo, Bear--
Max and Buddy,
Sushi and
Grafin Hegwig von Stubenrein*,
Hedy for short.
For 30 years, dachshunds, chihuahuas
and miniature schnauzers.
Chihuahuas are definitely
the undercover dogs,
but dachshunds will burrow too.
Hedy and Buddy at the foot
of the bed, cross- and lengthwise.
Bobo too, but anywise.
Sushi and Max like it
when we sleep on our sides--
preferring the crooks of the knees.
Katie was an armpit dog.
Dogs are mobile and in a pinch
do double duty as a heating pad--
but a cold nose on bare skin
is welcome in the heat of the summer.
Night or nap, the company is welcome--
Did we rescue them or did they rescue us?

My turkey sausage
Stuffed with a kraft single
My strawberries
Grape tomatoes
And plum
My peanut butter *******
My bite of cottage cheese
My handful of carrots
My golden raisins
Wonderfully delicious
I will lie in my bed
As my foot digests
"Life, don't talk to me about life"
Says Marvin
The talking, walking
Robot
Oh poor Marvin
You only live once
Try to make the best of it
And you said the most
Stimulating conversation
You had was with a toaster
I believe it was, lol
I would like to meet
And greet you
And welcome you to
This home
You can hold the dachshunds
And we can watch
Hitchhiker's Guide
To The Galaxy
Your role made the whole series
In my opinion
Thank you Marvin
I am one who often feels
Like you
I observe and I see
Time and time again
And I am often alone like you
But it's good to know you
And enjoy the day
With you
I'll take you to the park
And we can watch the birds
We can even have them make you
A girlfriend robot as well
If you would like
Marvin
My friend today
And always

That Happy Little Dachshund Dance
All dachshunds dance their days in happiness
And shake their bodies, tails, and ears about
And thank their humans every doggie day
With puppy kisses and yappings of joy:
For cats to chase, for beds to muss
For grassy lawns on which to play
Hoovers to bark – oh, what a fuss!
And your pillow at the end of day
For dogs still live in Eden, and that is why
All dachshunds dance their days in happiness

"Hello There"
I May say
If I were to meet
You on any day
What a strange man
I might seem to be
And maybe
I'll give it a try
To show you
Something reminiscent
Of the love
Jesus showed to me
I'm just a guy
With an akward shoulder
I like to lay about in parks
And sometimes
All too often
These dachshunds
Will make a loud bark

Counting Dachshunds
Some people go to sleep by counting sheep
But I instead must count two dachshund pups
Who are not comforted by box or crate
Or fluffy towels upon the bedroom floor
Astrid and Luna commandeer the pillows
By right of conquest over human hearts
And there recline like princesses royal
Throughout the watches of the dreaming night
O sleepy little carnivores, you bless
Both nights and days with doggie happiness!

A Treatise on the Burrowing Habits of Dachshunds
in memory of
Astrid-the-Wonder-Dachshund
six pounds of barking, yapping, demanding, and love
A dachshund will burrow under the garden fence
For every dachshund thinks she is a wolf
A fearsome apex predator with a squeaky toy -
This is in the nature of dachshunds
A dachshund will burrow into your tightly-closed hand
Nosing out the doggie treat you have hidden there
A fearsome apex predator and omnivore -
This is in the nature of dachshunds
A dachshund will burrow into your end-of-day lap
Watching both the television and the cats
A fearsome apex predator drooling on your book -
This is in the nature of dachshunds
A dachshund will burrow, borrow, beg, and bark
And in her foreshadowing of that better World to come
A dachshund will burrow deeply into your heart -
And love you forever
This is in the nature of dachshunds
And of you

An Hour with Dachshunds and Keats
The first day of autumn – surprisingly cool
In this almost tropical latitude
So after a day of working outside
I sat with Keats before a brushy fire
As is my custom I read his “Ode to Autumn”
With a tumbler of – lemonade – to hand
While the little fire sang its own kind of song
And the dachshunds snuffled among the leaves
The first day of autumn – surprisingly cool
And in her rising the Evening Star blesses us

Seven Haiku for the Pleiades
The seventh poem – think of the Subaru badge – is not seen. That thoughtful poem is the one you will write.
1. Two Goddesses and a God Come to Visit
All in the same sky:
Luna, Venus, Jupiter
While the soft winds sigh
2. Barefoot in the Stilly Dawn
Barefoot in the grass
Eyes to the east, the stilly dawn
The stars have withdrawn
.
3. Dachshunds on Their Dawn Patrol
Every dachshund thinks
That she is a timber wolf -
Perhaps it is so
4. Summer Lingers
Yes, summer lingers
Crickets sing throughout the night
Their October hymns
5. A Prison Visit
The horizon has no meaning
If the prisoners look up -
Concertina wire
6. The Prayers of Planets and Stars
The planets and stars
Need not our prayers; they never sinned -
Do they pray for us?

Until this morning my daughter was safe
For so the city said
But the waters rose, slithering up her stairs
And still the city said she was safe
She was evacuated, first by canoe
Then by an air-boat
Then by a dump truck
She and another evacuee laughed in the rain:
“Now we are the people they take pictures of”
Then by a bus
To a center at Saint Martha’s Church and School
Where someone said she would be bussed again
This time to downtown Houston, for reasons
Best known to some stupid *** of a *****
Her friend’s husband with his big ol’ pickup
Worked around barriers and through high water
And they escaped up the road to Willis, Texas
Tomorrow I will be honored to shake his hand
Long ago, when she left home, I promised
That an old man and two little dachshunds
Would wait for her. I’m even older now
With grand-dachshunds – but we said we would wait
And we have
Best I can do at the moment
Tears of gratitude
Deo gratias

Late at Night on Christmas Eve
After breakfast with a friend
After setting up for a family luncheon
After a family luncheon that never seemed to end
After cleaning up after a family luncheon
(and that, too, never seemed to end)
After a moment of sitting and thinking with wife and child
After opening gifts (with dachshunds and cats)
After sharing gifts (with dachshunds and cats)
After keeping dachshunds and cats from eating the tree ornaments
After watching Judy Garland sing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”
After sitting exhausted with a therapeutic episode of The Office
You realize
The day wasn’t so bad

Dispatches for the Colonial Office
The October Squirrel Festival
For Jerry Nobles, of Happy Memory
Our Town Pharmacist and a Joyful Friend
Squirrels!
They’re up the trees; they’re down the trees
They swarm each other just like bees
They’re up the oak; they’re down the pine
They really need a traffic fine
Dachshunds!
Our outraged pups – they yap and bark
While chasing squirrels all over the park
Dachshunds are usual merry and curious
But with squirrels they are fast and furious
But not fast enough
Cats!
Tuxedo-Cat, all proper and prim
Disapproves of the others with a face all grim
