"broccoli" poems
empty is not the right word. what is the word for not quite empty but not quite full? there is a glass on the table- it is not half-empty, but it is not half-full. it is just a glass of water. i am just a glass of water: not empty, not full; not happy, not sad- not anything. not anything at all. the clear blue nothingness reminds me of the fact. it’s dotted with cotton candy clouds. i wonder if they are as sweet. my tongue salivates at the thought. it is like a land of dreams without sorrow or pain yet i am here, floating lightly though i feel like a paperweight, weighed down by the lump in my throat. it’s hard to remember what home looks like. i can’t see in terms of “where i belong,” i only see in terms of “the trees are like broccoli sprouts-” and “the cars look like hotwheels-” and “every single one has a person in it, and they all have their own journeys, and i am here.” i don’t think they know how beautiful it is. i didn’t. home to me now is a backpack a couple books and a trinket from an old friend. they are the only ones like me: strangers in a strange land. i’d like to find my way back someday- if only i knew the way.

Perhaps the earth is floating, I do not know. Perhaps the stars are little paper cutups made by some giant scissors, I do not know. Perhaps the moon is a frozen tear, I do not know. Perhaps God is only a deep voice heard by the deaf, I do not know. Perhaps I am no one. True, I have a body and I cannot escape from it. I would like to fly out of my head, but that is out of the question. It is written on the tablet of destiny that I am stuck here in this human form. That being the case I would like to call attention to my problem. There is an animal inside me, clutiching fast to my heart, a huge carb. The doctors of Boston have thrown up their hands. They have tried scalpels, needles, poison gasses adn the like. The crab remains. It is a great weight. I try to forget it, go about my business, cook the broccoli, open the shut books, brush my teeth and tie my shoes. I have tried prayer but as I pray the crab grips harder and the pain enlarges. I had a dream once, perhaps it was a dream, that the crab was my ignorance of God. But who am I to believe in dreams?

3-2-2017 (unknown date of origin) Something's wrong... you don't belong here. I said, looking down at the pineapple on my pizza. I said, looking down at the ketchup on my macaroni. I said, looking down at the cream of mushroom soup on my meatloaf. He said, looking down at me and my boyfriend, holding hands in public. Like I'm a creep.  I'm a ****** What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here. You see there's these things that we learn at the dinner table. When we're kids we have certain items served to us on our plates. Whatever doesn't end up there, isn't a part of the discussion. After all, they say if you don't have a seat at the table, you are likely to be on the menu. So, when ****** orientation and gender identity aren't seated at the table of childhood, they get served for the first time in unexpected places.   Like an avante garde celebrity chef's designer meal, prepared for critiques by the food bloggers.   They get served in college classroom debates or in dorm rooms with freshman roommates.   They're on the menu in in some movies but served with a side of stereotypes and silly trope toppings.   They get grinded into glitter dust sprinkled on the annual PRIDE Parades like an overly salty seasoning mix.   They're on the menu in workplace diversity trainings, but too little too late - they get lost in the marginalized buffet.   They get served at the oppression Olympics, or actually at the Olympics unwillingly by a journalist who only pretends to eat a well-balanced diet, but really has LGBT food allergies,  if you know what I mean. In reality, these should be staple dishes consumed by commoners, consumed by you and me, consumed by children along with their healthy daily dose of broccoli and cauliflower, squash and zucchini, even eggplant.   They should be in every ******* cookbook with pictures and all different kinds of recipes! I want every child to have gay on their dinner plate, lesbian lunch, gender nonconforming on the brunch menu, and bisexual breakfast.   And everything in between in the queer spectrum served during snack breaks.   I want every child to look down at their plate and see pineapple pizza and say, gee that looks great!   I love all of the pizza toppings, no matter whether gay or nay. ... except for anchovies, of course.

Broccoli in a white lamp shade cast shadowy face tattoos to mark the unjoustly. The festival in background is throbbing in directly contrasting sound, to the art nouveau it's sleeping with. Each vegan burger stand vomits exquisite neon. However the collage itself is apologetically brown. Theatre masks and DJs, VR and a Just Dance floor set, a sprint before midnight, a sprint after discount ethanol; so I gaze and perhaps ponder for a friend. And yet when counting the heads, I find I needn’t more than my own to hands for the few middle-aged supermarket clerks

Consumer's Solstice
spring planting, spring harvesting, spring garlic One of the great joys of having a job in agriculture is to think days, weeks, even months ahead, One of the great joys of having a job in poetry, like a fireman,  a patient planter of love, you wait to be called, then becoming by being, part of an all consuming burning come spring, take advantage of the cool, wet weather of spring to put in multiple crops of peas and lettuce, also a great time to get your perennial vegetables, like asparagus and rhubarb, started the planting cycle is not an either/or, come harvest thy labored fruits, nine crops to harvest come March, kale, pick leaves as needed, leeks, best left in the ground and harvested as needed, parsnips, purple sprouting broccoli, rhubarb, spring cabbage, spring cauliflower, and of course, my personal fav, Spring Garlic Garlic, like like love, is generally planted in the fall, before the frost and harvested the following late summer. But from March to May, once the ground has truly thawed, the young lover plants, spring garlic or green garlic, can be harvested. it’s a long bus ride to Western Canada where the garlic spring has come, ain’t complaining lots of time to write foolishness and plant a few good bus poems in northern ontario and even michigan, the window slides, and the seeds scattered, but at every bus poet stop, those that need it, planted many inches deep April 2 naught how I wish I was nineteen again

It’s something that try we should To provide the parrot its basic food Apple minus seeds mango banana Grape orange guava papaya As for vegetables cooked dried bean With beet broccoli its heart you can win Cucumber carrot and cauliflower They surely love like they love a shower Corn on the cob is fun for parrot They aren’t fussy as them you thought Hot peppers peapod lettuce For them delicacies you can choose Sweet and baked potato well cooked yam They devour in delight add to their glam Parrots are cute friendly and nice Give them oatmeal millet brown rice They’re not greedy from you they won’t beg Though these birds love scrambled boiled egg The parrot is innocent gorgeous and sweet Can’t call them carnivore yes they like meat Must talk to them and not keep your mouth shut Your loving pet the parrot loves occasional nut. Now words of caution what don’t do them good Candy and chocolate and all junk food I know you are smart and not at all mean To offer this wonder bird mushrooms caffeine Believe my words they aren’t my opinion Use them in your food don’t give them onion Dairy products for them are a big ‘no’ ‘no’ You surely want them to healthily glow Give the parrot shower keep its cage clean Give them just fresh foods no sugar no caffeine Say ‘no’ to pesticides choose only organic See in their bowel nothing goes toxic Follow what I’ve said the task is not hard Spend your time well with this beautiful bird.

Parrot Care
An upright abutment in the mouth of the Willis Avenue bridge a beige Honda leaps the divider like a steel gazelle inescapable sleek leather boots on the pavement rat-a-tat-tat best intentions going down for the third time stuck in the particular You cannot make love to concrete if you care about being non-essential wrong or worn thin if you fear ever becoming diamonds or lard you cannot make love to concrete if you cannot pretend concrete needs your loving To make love to concrete you need an indelible feather white dresses before you are ten a confirmation lace veil milk-large bones and air raid drills in your nightmares no stars till you go to the country and one summer when you are twelve Con Edison pulls the plug on the street-corner moons Walpurgisnacht and there are sudden new lights in the sky stone chips that forget you need to become a light rope a hammer a repeatable bridge garden-fresh broccoli two dozen dropped eggs and a hint of you caught up between my fingers the lesson of a wooden beam propped up on barrels across a mined terrain between forgiving too easily and never giving at all.

Making Love To Concrete
......was a freezing morning. no rooster woke me....i opened my eyes at first light of dawn, sipped hot coffee....my thoughts, recalling....traveling, with the swirling steam... turkey wasn't done yet, but, hours before, table was already set... while awaiting guests, I leant on the counter...my head, to rest, i looked outside the small window and was greeted by a full moon, aglow... there was so much food on the table...weariness was healed by laughter...conversations touched on weather, politics, food...they refused to end, glasses sparkled with bubbly wine....sliced meat was arranged on a big tray...baked sweet potato with caramel smelled, tasted good...broccoli rave was green and spicy...i didn't know potato salad could taste good without meat!....coffee and pies came next.....the dogs, communicated with their eyes and paws...socializing, too, like their masters, i saw what was left, after slicing the plump roasted fowl...a skeleton, still with thick strands of meat, and the  palatable stuffing made with onions and prunes. dishes were washed, kitchen was back in order, after showering....everyone rushed to their beds, yet, i had to peep out the window, one last time... the full moon, still was upon us...confirming its presence....a long time witness to the moments we celebrate........encouraging our moods, our thoughts.....our hearts.......even when it's not a thanksgiving night.. The Day After...
My nickname for you was "broccoli". I called you that because Your hair is so curly That one of our classmates Tried to describe it and could only Come up with "broccoli" And somehow that name stuck in my heart. To this day, I can't eat broccoli Without thinking of you, Picturing your curly brown hair And kind green eyes And strong yet tender fingers And brilliant ear-to-ear smile And smirk just for me. I miss you. A lot. I never told you I was in love with you, And I regret that. So I want to write a book of poems And promote it far and wide Just so I'll have the chance To maybe catch your attention And see you again. Then, maybe I can tell you "Thanks for the collection of Emerson You so thoughtfully bought me... That's what made me fall Head over heels for you."

Chop. Chop. Chop. The colors of the pepper scatter on woodgrain. They sit next to the diced onion that I cut blind- Chop with my face turned to the door. Those are next to the once big trees of broccoli- Chop now small flowers, and there's a potent pile of garlic- Chop ready to be thrown into a shallow pit of heat- the olive oil is sizzling. Stop. Listen to sound of produce. Go! Don't let the smoke rise too far- the noses will come visit and take your dinner away. That's okay... I wasn't hungry anyway.

Broccoli
I carry a white noodle bowl, carefully up to my chin. I smile as my nose catches, the steam so grey and thin. I set the bowl down gently, Because it was too hot. and take this time to ponder, The noodles I have got. A small carrot captain, rides his vessel south. But the spoony seas are violent, and bring him to my mouth. Legions of green sprouts, are armed and at the ready. But their base was built on broth, and therefore is unsteady. A scallion sergeant paces, He’s timid and afraid. And hopelessly fell in love with, A mushroom mermaid. The brothy land changes, As beef enters the scene. And to the broccoli scouts, this meat is only mean. Finally the egg, who knows he’s the best. Will wander around the edges, till he decides to rest. The dinner’s duty done I tilt the ocean east And drain the sea of veggies into the belly of the beast I take the styrofoam bowl. And poke a hole in its side. The bowl is now found empty All my friends have died.

Etymologically, paradise is inherited from the Latin paradisus and the Greek paradeisos and ultimately an ancient Iranian root -- pairi daêza. In theory, paradise is a religious term. By that definition, paradise is a place in which existence is positive, harmonious and timeless. It is conceptually a counter-image of the miseries of human civilization; in paradise, there is only peace, prosperity, and happiness. It’s absurd, though, how we provide ourselves with such a convenient idea, a carrot for all mankind to share in our relentless drive towards death. It’s absurd that we must rely on such nonsensical ideals to inspire us to adhere to literal, arbitrarily-dictated morals. “Thou shalt not do things we say you probably shouldn’t. Except sometimes.” “Actually, whenever, as long as you feel bad about it and spend a moment kneeling quietly and thinking something along the lines of ‘So, like, sorry -- my bad. It won’t happen again, unless it does.’” The fundamental mistake here is attempting to delineate the existence of Man with an old book and relentless propaganda and childhood indoctrination and threats of post-mortem punishment, but more on topic -- why can’t one just live the right way without this kind of artificial motivation? It’s a juvenile concept that we’ve taken much too far. It marginalizes the human race -- “listen, Man, if you eat all your broccoli, then you can have dessert.” But what happens in this situation, when the dessert isn’t real? What I mean to say is that maybe you should eat your broccoli because it’s healthy, and because, besides what society has attempted to instill in you, it might actually be tasty if you give it a chance. Live for now. Care about people now. Because you don’t get anything afterwards; however cynical it may be, dessert is just a cold grave or a flame designed for whole incineration of your being. Paradise is now.

Water the Greenhouse Water the plants on the deck. Walk Autumn Moon. Salutation to the Sun Yoga on the deck Prayers Angel of Air Reading & Study with Ken Sipping herbals & he, his coffee. Pick up. Moving the living room furniture Rearranging. Sweeping. Mopping. Clean the kennel. Fresh bedding for Autumn. A break for Sevenfold Peace in the sunshine. Listening to the Holy Stream of Sound. Playing with Autumn. Laughing with Ken. Continuing with rearranging & cleaning Done! Another break With Ken, Autumn & Habibie By the firepit in front of the shop. Auti chasing water up and down and around. Walk to Alli's, talk and pick up the key. Cut broccoli, cabbage, carrots, & kale Add a few pods of peas Drizzle poppy seed dressing. Two bowls with 1/2 cup of rolled oats each Add cinnamon. Taking a teaspoon Half full with honey. Dipping it into the center of the oats Pouring boiling water over the honey. Into the oats. Stirring and stirring Watching the cinnamon spirals Mix into the sweet porridge. Small cacao chips, sunflower seeds A few raisins Sprinkled as garnish. Eating together Smallville, playing with Autumn Habibie resting near by. She maybe carrying kittens. Too early to tell. Tired. Good night. Sleep. 2:30 am. Ken up watching a movie on is phone. My, my, how times have changed. Return to bed. Writing, writing, writing….now it is done.

Flowing Movement
There was never before heard Such a cacophony As the day I witnessed The vegetable medley 'Since you've bean gone' They blasted out The runners and broads joined in song They could have rocked it all night long But it was Taters turn They  rocked  the stage The veggies went wild The 'monster mash' was all the rage Then was petit pois chance to shine He wowed them with a dance Then made the broccoli sway and weep With 'Give peas a chance'

Vegetable medley
I don’t like cauliflower so I will feed all mine to friends moving black specks, fruit flies on vegetables confused killing their dinner with cyanide like sticks of cinnamon or garlic cubes I hand it to bugs with my long second toe that is supposed to mean I am a genius, but I don’t eat cauliflower broccoli anything leafy and I am missing fish oil from my diet confused I whisper into the fruit flies’ elf ears perked up as dog eyes escape their sockets sometimes Dogs do not eat cauliflower either or hummus they are not even confused Morning, we all see the same shape of the moon’s goneness but others will eat bread despite mold I wonder if I am one and what have I done to the economy by disliking cauliflower broccoli anything leafy and fish oil, as well.

missing fish oil
i love onions. onions are great, who doesn’t love onions? they’re useful for everything for improving the state of cuisine, they make everything better. when i think of onions, i think of their ability to change life’s point of view i think of a turning page. after searching the market, i found the perfect onion. with perfect, glistening skin, endless interesting layers, and the taste i knew was unforgettable. i tried to preserve you. with every slice to your skin, i’d wrap you back up. place you in a drawer. hide you away, my secret. eventually, i had to face reality. you can’t preserve something that was meant to perish. your glistening skin was tarnished with scars. your once deep layers revealed themselves… shallow. your “spice of life” flavor, guess what? it’s rotten. now, when i think of an onion i think of its ability to make me cry. i think of its foul taste that leaves regret in my mouth. i hate onions and all they stand for. you’re not useful, you’re worthless. who wants the taste of dirt in their mouth? you don’t make anything better. you make things worse. you made me worse. i’m better off without onions. i hate them. i prefer broccoli anyways.

What makes a salad salady? It can't be the salad itself: lettuce leaves us confused with fruit salad, broccoli salad and coleslaw (which isn't even a salad - or is it?). Perhaps "salad" is the scrumpy sound it makes when you munch on the mixture? But what about banana salad, potato salad, and tuna salad? Should we still believe in a definitionless dish, or should we better define it?

Quest Through the Salad Bowl
Zombies are waddling toward their door. Witches are cackling, black cats are scratching, And the ghouls want brains and more. But Brig and Ophelia aren’t scared yet, They’re waiting inside, Gobbling strange snacks while they hide. It’s bugs they like to chew and gnaw; And they love to eat their spiders raw, Not fried with onions, like Granda; Or served with broccoli, like Nana. Not boiled with worms and creepy crawlers. Ciaran eats those, Not these crazed daughters. Ophelia and Brig Eat them raw, Alive, not dead, With wiggly legs and sharp jaws; And wrapped up with mosquito heads In white sticky spider webs. They eat Black Widows soaked in goblin blood And wicked witch’s poo; Made from bats and rats and unschooled fools, That witches eat to soften  stools. They eat fat spiders Floating in soup, That slide and wiggle Down their throat. They eat them with their mouldy cheese, Melted over wasps and bees. The girls fork down spider stew, They love the taste “Tres beaucoup.” The gravy’s made from a mummy’s spit, And sweat that drips from a ghoul’s armpit. They like their spiders spread on bread, A feast to feed the risen dead. When their snack is finally done, They’ll pick their teeth and scrape their tongues For Daddy Long Legs they didn’t eat. The long legs caught between their teeth. They'll use those legs to weave a wreath, To trick flies and bugs and lonely spiders Into their hungry House of Horrors.

I like you Kind of in the way that I like broccoli Sometimes youre almost perfect, sometimes there's a bit too much cheese. And other times.. Youre much too raw. Maybe, I should just stop eating broccoli.

Why do people readily believe When you tell them: There are 7 billion stars but check when the paint is wet? Fall and I'll catch you, No need to look back over your shoulder, I'll be there, I promise. I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not sure, I do know however My intentions are pure. How come sand is yellow, Why is it that when you draw a tree it always looks like broccoli? Why is it that when I eat broccoli I always imagine it to be a tiny tree? I munch delicately on this green leafy thought nugget, tasting each sprouty morsel, savoring its saged wisdom.

once again, curved fists and clenched eyebrows and your words are venom in my mouth MY LIPS ARE BLEEDING, BROKEN THAT I'M ONLY TRYING TO HELP little baby, little boy curled up in your accusations he reaches a single finger, gnarled and unsure your violence and insults and broken hands are turning him from boy to m o n s t e r. "you're the only one who understands me" watch as my heart crumbles and falls into the ocean  in every single way i've ever wanted to save you i'm sorry the telescope lens is still cloudy i have to cut my knees and crawl back through the ******* dungeon find my way through the bramble and glass and barbed wire I'M TIRED OF GOING BACK GOING BACK GOING BACK i want the safety of the muted nest and momma's lemon tree i promise i won't eat all the broccoli if you'll let me come home.

VEGAN THANKSGIVING
