The Silk Engineer
"And then taking from his wallet an old schedule of trains, he'll say I told you when I came I was a stranger I told you when I came I was a stranger."                                         --- Leonard Cohen I'm the most surprised person on the planet. Your coming to see me off at the airport has my mind scratching glass seeking words. Why is it that in this relationship, you seem to have gotten all the speaking parts? You're well aware that I have loved you for the better part of two years, bottling that emotion, afraid to pop the cork. Your eyes implore mine, rotating like a searchlight over Baghdad seeking the stealth laying carnage to your heart. Twice in the last week you've made it evident, the Grail was mine, but for the drinking --- That and finding a shorthand for adultry. I'm guilty courting the love of a married woman, made worse, you're here at my departure telling me we aren't free to choose who we love. I know my desire must die of thirst, so I turn, boarding pass in hand, the last words I ever hear from you, Write me! --- Thirty-five years later I have.

For Lana: Wherever This May Find Her
We rushed on glorious wings that fed bombs into Baghdad soil with feverous lust for a hollow dream. Now nine long years later, seventeen bodies lie on earth where oil engenders a lust that’s even greater. Seventeen skeletons innocent; Seventeen bloodlines’ descent. Karzai’s blank solace and Kandahar’s dead seventeen lay heavier on the heart than lead. Three tours were far too many, the fourth far more than he could take. A sergeant who’d have given any- thing for his wife and kids’ sake. Seeing a good friend’s severe injury – the last blow Sanity could handle. Morality goes out – light from a candle swaddled in smoke’s endless perjury. Seventeen seconds of forethought may perhaps have faltered his shot; Seventeen centuries of ponder and still the heart may have not grown fonder. Seventeen lovers left alone, or loves that’ll never come to pass, seventeen graves of heavy bones mark where a madman’s mind broke at last. Seventeen skeletons innocent; Seventeen bloodlines’ descent. Karzai’s blank solace and Kandahar’s dead seventeen lay heavier on the heart than lead.

MAY 26TH 2014
God said, -through the Shaikh... ..be He blessed, The news has come to me about the kind of calamity that will befall Baghdad. Offering a supplication on behalf of the inhabitants of the city, praying they be spared. Saying, as God, dejected; *Be my life for indeed someone in this city deserves to be killed and crucified! For one individual whom YOU honor, like thousands of others whom YOU shall have destroy them; You make us suffer for THEIR sins?* WHAT HAVE THEY DONE? YOU *have melted the pieces into ingots of the Godless and men? You try to compete with the Prophets? You claim to miracles? You believe you speak the Word? That you represent, in doing, by action? Nay, -you serve the Jinn!* This is the end of an Age, Hypocrite! Vanity is your loss. * *...be not a deceiver... (85:20)* *

Donald Trump was elected President of those United States, He said to his household: Stay here awhile, I notice a fire..." -Sheik Al Jilani The people hate him, the nation opposes him, Perhaps I shall bring you news of it." -Sheik Al Jilani Iraq is the world's second largest source of proven oil reserves... Hold your tongue! You have no common sense! Your house on the river Tigris and yet you are dying of thirst? -Sheik Al Jilani just two steps from everything everything O' seeker hereafter             See,                           -Me. Utterances
And here face down beneath the sun And here upon earth’s noonward height To feel the always coming on The always rising of the night To feel creep up the curving east The earthy chill of dusk and slow Upon those under lands the vast And ever climbing shadow grow And strange at Ecbatan the trees Take leaf by leaf the evening strange The flooding dark about their knees The mountains over Persia change And now at Kermanshah the gate Dark empty and the withered grass And through the twilight now the late Few travelers in the westward pass And Baghdad darken and the bridge Across the silent river gone And through Arabia the edge Of evening widen and steal on And deepen on Palmyra’s street The wheel rut in the ruined stone And Lebanon fade out and Crete High through the clouds and overblown And over Sicily the air Still flashing with the landward gulls And loom and slowly disappear The sails above the shadowy hulls And Spain go under the the shore Of Africa the gilded sand And evening vanish and no more The low pale light across that land Nor now the long light on the sea And here face downward in the sun To feel how swift how secretly The shadow of the night comes on…

Friday ****** Friday They cried for you, asked forgiveness Noises sang, and woke people from their naps Noises those who belong to explosion people blinded by religion But if such existed there would be no poor people asking for pennies Paris, city of love For Friday only created silence and pain This silence that was off by sounds of machine guns Beirut, a city that bombs interrupted Baghdad, a city that god corrupted Traitorous religions.

The Desert wind.....
Sinbad’s sea-battered ship was poised on the edge of annihilation, The Sultan's brow furrowed with curiosity, then without warning Scheherazade stilled her narrative and lived to see the morning sun. When the moon and stars next owned the sky, Sinbad was snatched from the jaws of death then the saga of Prince Kalandar seized the king's soul with wonder but Scheherazade left the tale unfinished and sang with the birds at dawn. Rimsky-Korsakoff turned the pages at his desk - consumed by Scheherazade’s charms then etched his pen across the waiting staves: The violin must weave her spell once more and bassoon and oboe take the prince’s part. Trombone and trumpet led the martial call and all the rest enlisted for the cause. Russian bravura fused with the seductive allure of exotic tunes born of the dust on the silken road. A sonic whirlwind filled Saint Paul Church, as winds and tremolos grew to cyclonic force. A wall of brass completed Kalandar’s tale. capped by an exuberant clash of cymbal plates. The silence yielded to tender violins chanting a hymn to the princess in all her grace. Tambourine and winds wove a tapestry of her debonaire and most virtuous prince. As the final pizzicato chord faded, the Sultan turned to Scheherazade with tear-filled eyes and beheld his immortal princess and she her valiant and eternal prince and so it would be as long as night preceded dawn. She kissed away his tears of joy and whispered in his ear, “My beloved husband, I will tell you stories forever. Tomorrow you shall learn of the Feast at Baghdad.”

I fear how much my heart would bleed To witness real tragedy To sink in Flanders Field To collapse in Choeung Ek To scream for mercy in Nanking To beg before the walls of Baghdad A life of insulation Pain relative to the first world My heart hardly calcified Compared to the bones of those who died Hardly removed from the horrors of mankind My drywall castle shields each breath So hardly removed From the stench of death

[Dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi, the greatest Fraud of all times] Darkness like Halagu Khan is running taking sword in hand; Light is fleeing raising its tail. The decorated dream-city will lose its electricity for ever; in all directions, the slogan of hyenas will be heard only. Going to the shade of Bodhi Tree, I asked Gautama Buddha, 'By tasting which poisonous fruit, your disciples have become insane and have been involved in massacre in Myanmar? ' Hanging his head, said Gautama, 'Darkness.' Going to Bethlehem, I asked Jesus Christ, 'By drinking which grape-juice, your disciples have become insane and have been involved in massacre in Mosul, Baghdad and Syria singing of democracy? ' Hanging his head, said Jesus, 'Darkness.' Going to the holy home of Moses, I bowed down my head and said, 'Would you tell me, by eating which Manna and Salwa your disciples have become insane and have been involved in killing children and women in holy Palestine? ' Hanging his head, said Moses, 'Darkness.' Going to Mathura city, I said to Lord Krishna, 'Please tell me, by eating which food offering to deity, your disciples have become insane and have been involved in massacre in Kashmir, Delhi and Gujarat? ' Hanging his head, said Krishna, 'Darkness.' Darkness like Halagu Khan is running taking sword in hand; Light is fleeing raising its tail. Again the days of darkness have descended on earth. I have been searching Abdul-Muttalib's son Abdullah's house in Pharaoh's city— in such a thick darkness, no doubt, the Sun of the desert had risen in the lap of Amina! Broken Layers..................................
Is this the place where garland grows, Among the olive branches low? Splattered, cindered, clay abode, Am I so alien? Encircled those, in khaki drab; Paying homage to the bags; Which hold remains of brave, young lads; Will I feel again? Surrounded, chains of un-lit lights, Which only shine in day, not nights; Illumination betrays the plights, Should we become aglow. A tree of polypropylene, Adorns the tower, so serene; A branch of steel hid in-between, That only gunner knows. The air of diesel, not of Myrrh, As pre-fab dwellings start to stir, Indifferent as they observe, Fading of the Star. A failed attempt at lone ‘SandMan’ Adorned with boots, bayonet in hand, Iraqi winds displace his stand, Re-formed in Kandahar. T’was yesterday, on Christmas Eve; A day ahead of promised leave, When Paul, Eric, Mark and Steve, Took leisurely patrol. In Tikrit, where he was born, Some sixty years before this ‘Storm’, They’d set-out on this early morn. Assessing evening’s toll. Among the buildings, scattered ruins; Charred men, like shadows, on the dunes; From temples soar cremated plumes; One hour had gone by. In the distance, beyond the spire, Come ‘reports’ of skirmish fire, Incessant screaming of the dire; Then screams dissolve to cries. Approach, inside a city square, Where once a fountain teemed, right there, Smoldering flesh, low burning hair; A family splayed together. Rank and putrid pieces strewn, Mother’s face, shrapnel-hewn; Attending Allah far too soon-- All their hands were tethered. Domestic dogs, now on their own, Fight for human flesh and bone; Such holy image sets the tone, As chorus strikes ‘Jihad’. Eric stumbles, exploded knee, Bearing witness to comrades, three, Souls reclaimed near instantly; Christmas in Baghdad. Is this the place where garland grows; Among the olive branches low? How I miss New England snow, This Christmas in Baghdad.
