Isn't a lot of life about mediocrity and within in it we find the huge challenges which we either rise above and transcend  or sink into cynicism and a sense of despair. That's what surprises us -  the bearing with and the rising above. Surely you've felt this? If you haven't ... then maybe you haven't lived long enough. I do get your frustration ... but honestly, it's part of life ... tolerance and acceptance and trying to look a little bit deeper to see what people are trying to say may help. But really ... what is art ... what is perfect poetry ... if you think you know ... please, please model it for us. I would be delighted to see it.
