(When they tease you and you stay quiet)
They shouted.
He said nothing.
Not because he was brave.
Inside him,
a word stumbled.
It fell.
And stayed there.
Now it rustles in his pocket
like a candy wrapper.
Waiting.

At the back of the classroom,
behind an empty desk,
something is missing.
As though someone
had picked up
the most important
"I'm sorry"
and carried it away.
