Aubrey laughs
like the world never learned
how to hurt people.
Like scraped knees heal overnight,
like cartoons are real,
like monsters only live under beds
and not inside grown people.
She grabs my hand
with those tiny fingers
and suddenly the whole world slows down.
Bills don’t matter.
Stress don’t matter.
The past don’t matter.
Because for a little while,
I get to see life
through her eyes.
And in her world,
flowers are picked for no reason,
the moon follows the car home,
and every bad day
can be fixed with a hug.
She calls my name
like it’s something important.
Like I’m a hero.
Like I hung the stars myself.
And maybe that’s what “happy” is.
Not money.
Not fame.
Not pretending life is perfect.
Maybe happiness is just
hearing Aubrey laugh from the other room
and realizing
you’d survive a thousand hard days
just to hear it one more time.
Because she doesn’t know it yet,
but she saved me too.
