Here we are in late December,
We’ve said goodbye to old November,
We await that magic night,
As Christmas Eve hoves into sight.
We picture now the snowy scene,
Our house bedecked with living green,
The eve is mother to the day,
As Mary was so far away.
And anyone can light a candle,
Let it glow and shine out bright.
Yes. Anyone can light a candle,
To remember that Christmas night.
On Christmas Eve the bells will ring,
and we will gather round to sing,
Christmas songs around the Yule,
Whether you are King or fool.
Noble, Squire, Prince or knave,
Upright Yeoman, warrior brave,
Bishop, Deacon, vicar, priest,
All enjoy the Saviour’s Feast.
So. Everyone should light a candle,
and raise a glass of wine.
Yes. Let’s all light a candle,
and drink to thee and thine.
So push the Advent doors ajar,
And look to see what’s there,
Three Wise men coming from afar,
With gifts enough to spare.
Christmas cheer in homes and halls,
Drive the winter’s dark away.
The Christmas Eve which we all love,
This special festive day.
So. Let’s keep lighting candles,
While we anticipate,
The Christmas that is coming,
That fine mid-winter’s date.
And let us remember that first Christmas Eve,
When first was revealed the things we believe,
So long ago so far away,
In Bethlehem that Christmas Day?
With angels singing songs so loud,
Old Joseph standing there so proud,
Young Mary overwhelmed by all,
Who bore the child at her Lord’s call.
No-one lit the candles,
Not in that stable bare.
No. No-one lit the candles,
To shine on the babe so fair.
There were no bells on that first night,
No Christmas trees festooned in light,
Not in a palace grand, nor hall,
But just a baby in a stall.
With *** and oxen on the straw,
The shepherds standing by the door.
Or so the tale was handed down,
Of Christmas night in Bethlem town.
And so, we wait and by-your-leave,
We shall see in this Christmas Eve.
So. Let’s keep lighting candles,
Upon these Christmas nights.
Yes. Let’s keep lighting candles,
The real Christmas lights.
