A fresh green leaf— a simple little thing— is a sign of life. Looking closely, I saw the whole universe sit inside it. It draws energy from a star, not too close, not too far. The elements of nature: carbon from the breathing air, hydrogen and oxygen for structure and life. Water from the soil, that falls from the clouds, from an atmosphere already present. A simple leaf— a perfect picture of a connected universe.

A LEAF
A fresh green leaf— a simple little thing— is a sign of life. Looking closely, I saw the whole universe sit inside it. It draws energy from a star, not too close, not too far. The elements of nature: carbon from the breathing air, hydrogen and oxygen for structure and life. Water from the soil, that falls from the clouds, from an atmosphere already present. A simple leaf— a perfect picture of a connected universe.
This poem is inspired by a comment by Mr. Lawrence Hall. Thank you, Sir.
