Disguises are welcome; Perhaps even required… Goblins and fairies, Paladins, Vampires, Copyrightable heroes; Everyone young or young at heart Smelling of sugar and makeup Aglow with LEDs. Most perform their pleases and thank yous, Some declare ‘Gimme!’ And a few say nothing at all. Wee ghosts clutch sacks of plunder, and Junior witches bless the doorbells of crones. Shame befalls the house with no porch light, As well it should; What heathen dares to skip this feast? But no matter, there’s always that one house With fog machines and thunder and Lightning strobes and a scary movie projected onto a Sheet on the garage door; And the pensioners giving out Full-sized candy bars; saints walking among us, Acclaim! The shroud between living and dead Thins and fades this night; The veil between child and adult Dissolves. Mocking our fears as we ought Sharing our sugar as we can Reliving childhood as we must: The Holiest kind of sorcery; Worthy of more than just one night.
