u O, Fair Abode, Thou Never Open'dst Thy Door When far from thee, my heart doth ache With pangs of longing, and a deep heart's sake For thee, dear home, I do beseech Why dost thou shut thy door, and leave me to beseech? Thy threshold, once a promise of warm delight Now stands as sentinel, guarding the cold, dark night Thy windows, once bright eyes, that shone with love's pure light Now dimly gaze upon me, with a dispassionate sight O, cruel fate, that doth deny me entrance To thee, dear home, where love and warmth do make their residence A wanderer, I roam, in search of peaceful nest But thou, dear home, dost mock my hopes, and put'st me to unrest Yet still, my heart doth hold on to love's sweet fire That once, I thought, did burn within thy secret choir And though thou never open'dst thy door to me My heart, dear home, doth still remain, in love's sweet ecstasy.
