I love the sentiment of this!!! Living in SK every single winter both myself and every other single person I know curse the weather and our very existence after a 10-day blizzard dumps 15 feet of snow everywhere, but that ain't any excuse to miss work or school or whatever... the endless shovelling and snowblowing and freezing our collective asses off, every single one of us swearing to whatever high power or deity we can still conjure that this winter will be the last winter, by next winder we'll have sold all we own and have moved out to Vancouver Island and live in a virtual and comparative paradise.

But, of course, we never do, because spring comes and with it warm weather that melts away all that accursed snow, and things grow, and the sunshine give us all a case of collective amnesia somehow, like Grandmother Earth waving her hand and doing a Jedi mind trick on us wretched Prairie dwellers, lolol, ahhhhh.

I've actually thought about. I'm on disability now and most people I know have long since moved outta Saskatchewan, so if I have to, say, fly to Edmonton to see my daughter does it make a difference if I fly from Nanaimo or Moose Jaw? So it's not convenience, sentimentality, or economics that keeps me in this frigid hell-hole for 6 or 7 months every year, so, hmmm....

I think just now I've stuck on it. My late spouse had all these sayings, some Lakota, some her own (I called them Amberysms because that was her English name, Amber, and some of her sayings were like Buddhism koans that I still haven't cracked the code on, lol). Her most insistent and persistent I heard over and over again was this, "Our sorrows dig the well that the waters of our joy later fill in", so how joy and sorrow are two sides to the same coin. Like the Buddha, of the titular prince from The Happy Prince, before they saw the sorrows of the world their joy was completely without meaning... 

It's like the worse the hand life has dealt you initially, once you get the next round of cards and are dealt pocket aces and you get first bet with a third ace flipped up, and another player having pocket kings, and another that 3rd ace, myyyyyy, how much more your appreciate how it all plays out after nearly losing your shirt just the previous round. I have no idea if that makes any sense, lol?!?

So that's why I stay in Moose Jaw even though I can't ski, or play hockey, or even skate anymore, so winter holds nothing but labourious drudgery, and sometimes having to drive to Regina through blizzards so effin' thick that I have to drive with my car door open, looking straight down with my neck cranked at the lines on the Trans-Canada just to make sure I don't hit ditch, while simultaneously glancing back up ahead, and also checking the rear-view, hoping to hell I don't rear-end someone, or have a semi pulling up behind me squashing me and my tiny Ford Focus like a bug! 

It's that pioneering spirit still maybe, how my grandpa had stories of when his family still lived in a house made of sod, and though their nearest neighbours only lived 3 miles away, they wouldn't see anyone outside of the family for those same 6 or 7 months... can you imagine?!? But the snow would be that deep, that it had to be a serious emergency before skiing or snowshoeing to the neighbours, and no one thought of themselves as deprived, that was just the way it was, normal life, and much better than the peasant lives they left behind in Europe no matter what.

So that's it! The spring and the summer in places like we live Irving 'cause I know when you folks get snow, wow, it even makes the Prairies look mild by comparison, but isn't that why we Canadians (or most of us other than those lucky devils in BC,, lol) tough it out, because it just makes when Grandmother springs to life, and those long hot summer days and nights all the sweeter, as frigid cursed winter digs the well that the water of spring, summer and autumn later fill? That has to be it, or else we are all just plumb crazy, lololol.

Sorry for this absolutely ridiculously long message, but "Better a Boomer than a Bummer" honestly solved a never-ending life-long riddle why I never have made that move to Vancouver Island, lol, and I knew as a fellow Canadian that you would definitely understand our seeming collective psychosis, and how there is nothing like contrast to spur a true appreciation, as with the weather as with life. Thank you!!!
