Watching the man sleep neurotically in bed
I thought of you,
And the time we talked over stale donuts and cold coffee.
I remember writing letters to you, Missy
And sending you "all my love" --
Anyway,
I was meaning to ask you,
Did you save any of it?
I could really use it back now
It's not for me, you understand.
I remember telling my friends:
"If you see Missy, give her my love"
And I was always afraid they would.
Missy, you're really no different
than the man I'm watching sleep neurotically in bed.
And I'm sorry Missy,
all the stale donuts and cold coffee in the world
couldn't change us now.

The first poem I ever had published (1984). I was only 19.
