Netanya's son left a dead rabbit
by the back door,
what am I to do with that?
I asked Netanya,
skin and gut it,
she said,
peering at me in the kitchen,
you can do that can't you?
I guess so,
I said,
well go on then,
she said,
so I went outside
and took the rabbit
to an outside table
and lay it down,
its dead eyes looked at me,
the grey fur still warm,
she brought a knife
and scissors out to me,
you'll need these,
she said,
standing watching me,
eyes bright and gazing at me,
I lay the rabbit on its back
and slit up the stomach
with the knife and took out
the guts and innards,
warm and smelly and ******
and put them to one side,
she looked on smiling,
I broke the back legs
and pulled the skin back up
and off up to the head and neck,
then cut off the head
and threw the head and skin
behind me and looked at her
standing there watching me,
very good,
she said smiling,
now cut it up
and we can stew it later,
I did as she said
and she put it a saucepan
and added water and stock,
and said,
well that's that,
now what do you want to do?
wash my hands,
I said,
then what?
she said,
are the kids out?
I asked,
yes all out,
she said,
not that it would matter
would it?
I mean last week
we were at it
when young Patty
came to the door
and knocked and said,
can I have money for ice cream
because the ice cream van's here?
off putting,
I said,
well no one's here
and so do we?
I nodded
and we walked upstairs
to our room
and closed the door
and she undressed
and I watched
and undressed too,
thinking of the rabbit
naked and cut up
and ready for stew.
