The sand has pardoned My departure The sea is soft & endless- I understand now how Certain days are not Days at all but small Chambers In the mind Pelicans, as solemn as Priests Bid farewell I want to remain Not out of happiness- But because the days here Loosen the machinery of thought Now there are airports- Announcements Waiting Rituals of departure Passports & the punishment of the herd- I carry, in my suitcase - Shirts stiffen by salt Preparing to exchange Astonishment for the Comfort of routine The entire island moving Into memory Which means it will deepen Become more radiant Than it ever was The tide, untouched by my leaving Erases my footprints with the Tenderness of something that never Needed me at all _____________________
