Dead bodies don't look like what you'd think they would.
They are hollow, and you can feel it.
Walking up to a casket, is the longest distance,
trudging slowly each step, another piece of your heart breaks.
Waiting to wake up, waiting for relief, that never does come.
Dead bodies are not what you may think of them,
and you may never know what they're like
until you place your hand on their shoulder, waiting to feel something.
But all that comes is the gutteral confirmation of a loss of connection.
As animals, I think we can sense death, the cold, echoing sickness of it's stiffness.
You wait for a push back, a hello?
anything at all.
But for once time does still,
just enough, for you to take in the loss.
Dead bodies are not what you may think of them.
They are fragile, solidified into the finality of life.
They are the only pause you get; grief encapsulated.
They are not waiting any longer, there is really no human in them at all.
And so begins the search for that kind of precious vitality, elsewhere.
