I wish I were stronger — armored, unbent, Immune to the world and its civil torment. Vaccinated against the everyday snare, Its polished cruelty, poised and aware, The kind that strikes softly, then smiles to ensnare. I wish I were sharper, quick-minded, severe, A dangerous edge to cut through the weird, To sever the venom, behead the obscene, To say: I see clearly. I know what you mean. No need to persist. Don’t push. Don’t insist. To nail shut the mouths that are swollen with sound, No anger, no shaking, no quiver unbound, Just one exact word, perfectly thrown, That lands like a verdict — final, alone. To face injustice, not letting flames rise, To leash all the rage, let my tight heart untie. To stop letting ******** move into my seams, Feed on my nerves, live off cuts and old screams. To stand up straight. Clear-sighted. Out of reach.
