I’m sitting down to write a poem Instead of tidying up Or dusting off the mantelpiece Or washing up my cups Or ironing or vacuuming Or looking for a job Or moving all those papers That have settled on the hob. Its not really a poem It’s a reason and excuse because when it comes to housework I’m just no bleedin’ use!

POEM
The summer sunshine, hot upon my face Has faded now and everything is chill, The once blue sky is all beset by clouds The summer sun has set behind the hill, And as the purple sunset spreads its cloak The birds fall silent and the world is still. Now in the velvet evening comes the thought That life is fading too and steals away The fire of youth, that like the Summer sun Warmed all the earth and shone throughout the day, Is turned to embers now and all its heat Serves just to bake the ground and light the clay. As night’s long shadows creep across the sky The memory of noontide sun remains, Of summer insects buzzing through the trees That cast a welcome shade in country lanes, And through my life I just remember sun Forgetting dreary summers and their rains.

Thoughts on a Summer Evening
The winter wind howls loud outside My draughty room is chill But deep inside I’m warm as toast For you are with me still. The cold bare branch of winter taps Upon my window pane, Now when your love comes tapping too My heart is wide again. I tried to lock and bar the door To keep cold winter out But still it creeps in everywhere And spreads its ice about. I tried to lock and bar my heart To keep the pain at bay, But when your love comes creeping in It melts the bars away. So though my window’s firmly closed My heart is open wide And welcomes in your warmth and love To my heart’s fireside.

My Winter Love
How far away the warm sun seems How distant now the dappled leafy shade, The breezes rippling Summer hay And sighing through the drowsy woodland glade. Now winds are cold and full of rain The lazy sun climbs slowly from his bed And trees are stripped of Summer’s crown Which flutters down to carpet earth instead. The Summer’s glorious greenery All lies in russet tatters on the ground The bleak black branches scrape the sky And wait for Winter’s cold and dreary round. The smoke from bonfires struggles up As fires barely manage to consume The sodden offerings from lawns Now scoured clear of leaves by rake and broom The luscious green of Summer’s gone, The red and gold and brown of Autumn too, The black and white of Wintertime Has still to come before the year is through. But Winter cannot last for long The days will soon be lengthening and then The bright green buds on Winter boughs Will signal Spring - and leafy trees again!

Autumn Leaves
I watch your train departing And, unbidden, to my eye Come familiar tears of sadness – I just want to stand and cry, But I watch as it grows smaller And then turn, with head bowed low. I know that you’ll be back again But how I hate it when you go.
