Bunnik, The Netherlands H. Paul F. Mercken, ° Leuven, Belgium, 1934, Ph.D. in Philosophy, Catholic University Leuven (1950), historian of Western Philosophy, with special attention to the Aristotelian ethical tradition in the Middle Ages (Latin, Byzantine and Arabic commentaries), University research and teaching in Belgium, Great-Britain, the USA, and 1978 -1991 Utrecht University. After early retirement: non-Western cultures, especially China and Japan and post-colonial DR Congo Kinshasa. Language and languages addict. Two volumes of poetry: 2012 (Dutch) and 2013 (bilingual). On the board of the Dutch Haiku Society (Haiku Kring Nederland). member Linacre College Oxford and the Oxford and Cambridge Society of the Netherlands and of the Humanist Society and the Freethinkers Society of the Netherlands. Recipient exchange cup the Bronze Owl for being the most versatile volonteer of his village, Bunnik, 2007. Intends to spend the month December 2016 with friends in Guanxi, Taiwan.
In friendship dedicated to Geert Verbeke Oh yes, I was born the wrong side of the track I never lied about it was proud of it wouldn't think of hiding hat I was born the other side of the track I confessed, undeniably, convincingly, uncontroversially, irretrievably that I was born the wrong side of the track but the more I insisted, the more I persisted, the more I conceded, the more they said that I was lying for, they said, nobody the wrong side of the track can lie that sincerely, nobody who's able to play the part that well to tell tales so veraciously so reliably can be born the wrong side of the track so now I lie about not being born the wrong side of the track and lo and behold now they believe me for, they say, nobody born the wrong side of the track can lie that well she is the queen of the festival that girl that claimed to be born the wrong side of the track
