I am a small town girl who grew up on a little farm in Michigan; / I grew up on the side of a river that ran through the woods, and I played in meadows; / I grew up on the pages of a storybook and in the land of make-believe; / my sister and I played pretend and fought dragons to defend our castle which was made with the greatest tools of imagination – pillows, blankets, and boxes; / I was homeschooled K-12, and I graduated a year early; / when I wasn’t doing schoolwork, I was reading, writing & daydreaming; / I read in the loft of our barn, I read on the banks of the river, & I read all through the night until the sun came up; / the librarians knew me by name; / I started college at a tiny school where my father and his father went; / it was there that I decided what I wanted to do with my life – read, write, and fix grammar errors; / I made my way across the country all alone to a land where buffaloes roam and mountains slice the ground.
