14/Non-binary/Kansas, USA My name is Afton, but I also go by Milo. I love to write poems, though I apologize that some are political. Please (if you do), / disagree respectfully! I'm bisexual/asexual and my pronouns are She/they. Let's make history!
They crossed the borders chasing light, With calloused hands and dreams held tight. Built towers high, picked fruits from trees, Raised children, others left with ease. They labored quiet, bore the strain, In fields, in kitchens, under rain. While those with suits and native names, Played ***** too, yet bore no blame. A theft is theft, a crime is a crime- But somehow, race defines our time. When Javier sins they shout and roar, But Jake’s mistakes they just ignore. A bottle tossed, a fight at night, One’s deported, one’s “just right” A broken law, a petty theft, One’s a threat, the other’s left. Then came a man with a golden crest, Who stirred up fear, proclaimed a quest; “To cleanse the land,” he said with pride, As children wailed and mothers cried. He wields his power like a sword, Cuts families down without a word. No justice, just a show of might, A “king” enthroned by bitter spite. But power built on fear will fade, As tides of truth will not be swayed. The land they walked, the sweat they gave, Will bloom beyond the threats he made. For laws are hallowed without grace, And justice wears a human face. So judge them fair, or judge us all, Lest we, not they, cause freedoms fall.

Lines in the Sand:
It still surprises me— how she makes my chest feel too small to hold everything I feel. My heart runs fast, but not from fear— it runs to her. I blush too easily. I hope she doesn’t notice, but maybe I want her to. There’s something holy in loving without conditions, without borders. I don’t just want her— I’m already committed, as if my soul quietly signed her name long before my lips ever could. She doesn’t even know that she is the dream I keep waking up inside of. ---
