we write because we are told
we write because we are cold

so why write poetry?

is it to obey
is it to simply misbehave
is it due today
is it more than what we say

if not
why do you write poetry?

because I can
&
because I am

we are made to feel
we are made to speak
some people are quiet
and others are bleak

words are expressive and alive
but some words are best left to die

your prestige and glamour
have grown too much
so many people bow down to you but
you can’t see your own feet.
expect me unwelcome
to your golden throne
i’ll raise your prices
flat iron my tongue to make you happy
rhythmize my lips so they sway
to the beat of my hips,
to the music of love
                                  love
                                             love

my ribcage scrapes against my heart
                              body
                              soul
      but isn’t supposed to
            protect me?

sir humbug
the job of the artist
is to be
luminous and dangerous

luminous to others
by being
dangerous to themselves

when the words are ripped from the chest,
atmosphere disbursed by the body’s projectile messes,
starburst fireworks,
luminous and dangerous,
luminating the shared night,
laminating your truths,
in poems disguised

and so the job,
our work,
begins

and i’ll watch the world
burn
burn
burn
with the fire that you started in me
i’ll stay and look past you
because you’re blocking
my view of heaven
where i can see the
butterflies and bees
where they sip on waterfalls and
drink champagne full of
the stars
you know you’re my sun
my moon
my stars
this is my blood
my sweat
my tears
from all these years of loving you
you should be thankful
but you didn’t choose me.
i chose you
