Racism and bigotry
In this divisive country
Black men being killed by cops
Tear gas for a photo op
Recession, race wars QAnon
As the pandemic rages on
Kids ripped from their families
Unwanted hysterectomies
Double standards in the senate
Greed and power their new tenet
Ignoring laws when they see fit
Nothing but hyGOPocrites
How can so many be so wrong
Falling for the pumpkin's con
Political poem I wrote on election day
Statues may tumble
But hate still stands
On a pedestal, proud
And foolishly clinging
To a dying light
To a long since lost battle
That will never end.
Walls crumble, steel bends
And the spirit bows
But right or wrong, friend,
It just does not break.
Even standing there
In the rubble of "what should be"
Realizing that doesn't exist now.
There is only "what is".
And all you can do is fight.
Bridges burn, and we'll never
Make it back to where
We were before the fires.
Simply standing on the banks
On our pedestals
In the rubble
Chest puffed
Chin out
Needing to break something else.
We memorialize the wrong things.
Irene Poole Oct 2017
I was trying to start
 a conversation, an education:
a way to reach the dark-hearted ignorance
and nurse it back to health in knowledge
but
my consequential words
slammed against your brick-walled brain
the china shop to your bull-
****.
Wasn't sure if I was going to post this, due to the political nature, but here it is. Sometimes all the work you put in to a well-crafted argument seems futile when pitted against an uneducated and close-minded opponent, but it is still important to try and have conversations with people who have opposing views from you. I felt like this feeling was better expressed in a poem than in an angry Facebook rant, thus this poem.
