Mad
Katie Worden Dec 2014
Mad
I am going mad
But don't you dare feel sad
I don't want your pity
This isn't a "feel better committee"

I laugh at everything
And all I hear is ringing
ringing ringing ringing
Of the doorbell in my mind
Someone must be trying to get inside!

Not once have I let someone in
Do you think it could be an assassin?
Maybe this person is trying to make me sane
Well their efforts are obviously in vain

Once you are gone you can never come back
Peace of mind is what I am lacking
lacking lacking lacking
All the friends I could of had
They're not like me, they are not mad

Walking home from a local pub
The evening so quiet
With the distinct smell of magnolia
Lingering in the midnight air
I look up at the stars
Suddenly my thoughts are taken back in time
It seems like yesterday I think
Where did the time go
Those endless nights of excitement
We’d throw stones on a stranger’s roof
Dare to ring someone’s doorbell
Then run away as fast as lightning
We laughed so much our stomachs hurt
Now our muscles contract from stress
The needle had reached the end of the record
Lifted and returned to its holding place
The stereo light still burning when returning home
From an intoxicated night of pleasure and dance
Oh the bliss of ignorance and youth
Sometimes it’s better not to know
I continue to walk on
Suddenly I see a FOR SALE sign
Someone else’s dream has come to an end
Or perhaps it’s just begun
You never know how special the moment is until it’s past
The biggest regret is regret

A doorbell.
Such an extravagant invention.
You press a button,
creating a beckoning sound
in which your host
is obliged to answer.
It’s an attention getter.
Much like a telephone ring.
Someone wants to contact you.
They call,
your phone rings,
it is your duty to pick up.
A connection.
Not unlike a letter in the mail.
Long distance communication.
My words,
full of sentiment and longing.
A way of speaking
to you.
So why aren’t you responding to any?

the echo,
the waiting,
the distance
between us…
