"yew" poems
This is the light of the mind, cold and planetary The trees of the mind are black. The light is blue. The grasses unload their griefs on my feet as if I were God Prickling my ankles and murmuring of their humility Fumy, spiritous mists inhabit this place. Separated from my house by a row of headstones. I simply cannot see where there is to get to. The moon is no door. It is a face in its own right, White as a knuckle and terribly upset. It drags the sea after it like a dark crime; it is quiet With the O-gape of complete despair. I live here. Twice on Sunday, the bells startle the sky ---- Eight great tongues affirming the Resurrection At the end, they soberly **** out their names. The yew tree points up, it has a Gothic shape. The eyes lift after it and find the moon. The moon is my mother. She is not sweet like Mary. Her blue garments unloose small bats and owls. How I would like to believe in tenderness ---- The face of the effigy, gentled by candles, Bending, on me in particular, its mild eyes. I have fallen a long way. Clouds are flowering Blue and mystical over the face of the stars Inside the church, the saints will all be blue, Floating on their delicate feet over the cold pews, Their hands and faces stiff with holiness. The moon sees nothing of this. She is bald and wild. And the message of the yew tree is blackness -- blackness and silence

The Moon And The Yew Tree
Perfection is terrible, it cannot have children. Cold as snow breath, it tamps the womb Where the yew trees blow like hydras, The tree of life and the tree of life Unloosing their moons, month after month, to no purpose. The blood flood is the flood of love, The absolute sacrifice. It means: no more idols but me, Me and you. So, in their sulfur loveliness, in their smiles These mannequins lean tonight In Munich, morgue between Paris and Rome, Naked and bald in their furs, Orange lollies on silver sticks, Intolerable, without mind. The snow drops its pieces of darkness, Nobody's about. In the hotels Hands will be opening doors and setting Down shoes for a polish of carbon Into which broad toes will go tomorrow. O the domesticity of these windows, The baby lace, the green-leaved confectionery, The thick Germans slumbering in their bottomless Stolz. And the black phones on hooks Glittering Glittering and digesting Voicelessness. The snow has no voice. 28 January 1963

E is an elegant eloquent Earl; E is an Egg whence an Eaglet emerges. F is a Falcon, with feathers to furl; F is a Fountain of full foaming surges. G is the Gander, the Gosling, the Goose; G is a Garnet in girdle of gold. H is a Heartsease, harmonious of hues; H is a huge Hammer, heavy to hold. I is an Idler who idles on ice; I am I--who will say I am not I? J is a Jacinth, a jewel of price; J is a Jay, full of joy in July. K is a King, or a Kaiser still higher; K is a Kitten, or quaint Kangaroo. L is a Lute or a lovely-toned Lyre; L is a Lily all laden with dew. M is a Meadow where Meadowsweet blows; M is a Mountain made dim by a mist. N is a Nut--in a nutshell it grows-- Or a Nest full of Nightingales singing--oh list! O is an Opal, with only one spark; O is an Olive, with oil on its skin. P is a Pony, a pet in a park; P is the Point of a Pen or a Pin. Q is a Quail, quick-chirping at morn; Q is a Quince quite ripe and near dropping. R is a Rose, rosy red on a thorn; R is a red-breasted Robin come hopping. S is a Snow-storm that sweeps o'er the Sea; S is the Song that the swift Swallows sing. T is the Tea-table set out for tea; T is a Tiger with terrible spring. U, the Umbrella, went up in a shower; Or Unit is useful with ten to unite. V is a Violet veined in the flower; V is a Viper of venomous bite. W stands for the water-bred Whale; Stands for the wonderful Wax-work so gay. X, or ** or *** is ale, Or Policeman X, exercised day after day. Y is a yellow Yacht, yellow its boat; Y is the Yucca, the Yam, or the Yew. Z is a Zebra, zigzagged his coat, Or Zebu, or Zoophyte, seen at the Zoo.

I still remember the drawn out afternoons, the minutes passing without a thing to do, the clock just a metronome keeping us in time. I poked fun at you without reason; jealousy leads one into themselves it seems. Do you recall? We were carnal beings... I'd apologize for my egoistic banter, but apologies are best left to the eulogizer, and this may be some sort of graveside whisper; a long-winded to-do list of idle talk. I'd call you "Lesbia", "Rosalind",  "my diadem stashed away", but twenty-two months wore words away and it would seem like frantic blandishing. Maybe in my own life I may be able to demonstrate what William Yeats had meant by a body quarreling with it's soul, but I think -- You're delusional! -- that I could be content. I remember everything --- I remember the yielded heart feels a subtle sting. The yew chattered in the wind outside your window and I felt rooted as I told you I was you and would always be. But twenty-two months is a long time.

Rainbow Darts.
What is different about your trunk? Said the Cedar to the Ash. It's rotten, ere forgotten, And its branches have long gone. What is different about your leaves? Asked the Oak to the Holly. They're pointed and disjointed And their colour has gone dark. What is different about your boughs? Asked the Poplar to the Yew. They're leveled and disheveled. Do you like them? Oh I do. The sunlight is fanned by your boughs, dear Yew, Rain makes night seem longer on your leaves, my Holly Your trunk may be rotten, dear Ash, but it is terribly untrue To say that it does worse than any other. The forest lights with sunly sprights And I will walk among the trees And hear the sounds and see the sights Of a nature much more at ease.

Peace in the Forest
From citron-bower be her bed, cut from branch of tree a-flower, fashioned for her maidenhead. From Lydian apples, sweet of hue, cut the width of board and lathe, carve the feet from myrtle-wood. Let the palings of her bed be quince and box-wood overlaid with the scented bark of yew. That all the wood in blossoming, may calm her heart and cool her blood, for losing of her maidenhood.

Seven stars in the still water, And seven in the sky; Seven sins on the King’s daughter, Deep in her soul to lie. Red roses are at her feet, (Roses are red in her red-gold hair) And O where her ***** and girdle meet Red roses are hidden there. Fair is the knight who lieth slain Amid the rush and reed, See the lean fishes that are fain Upon dead men to feed. Sweet is the page that lieth there, (Cloth of gold is goodly prey,) See the black ravens in the air, Black, O black as the night are they. What do they there so stark and dead? (There is blood upon her hand) Why are the lilies flecked with red? (There is blood on the river sand.) There are two that ride from the south and east, And two from the north and west, For the black raven a goodly feast, For the King’s daughter rest. There is one man who loves her true, (Red, O red, is the stain of gore!) He hath duggen a grave by the darksome yew, (One grave will do for four.) do you remember i wrote about the hawfinch, dead at my gate? i have the skull to wonder at the big beak. such a big beak. a man came yesterday, explained yew berries, the outer shell and kernel. none in the drive today. no berries left, these trees, there are no hawfinch here, today, sir. yes, you may photograph. this skull. sbm.

littled skull
I came to a courtyard of my own making, To a cottage by the sea at the worlds edge. I furnished it with my left over life, complete, Barren and colorless and I wrote the newest Book of psalms out of tinder and flame, a tome Of grey and useless poems, unheard of songs And reams of flesh. There in the lightest dark, By the Druid stone that was placed just for me, I planted a creeping yew tree. And the moon Sang in celebration and silence like a fallen Priest. Under the covering hazel trees, That sprung to life after the longest winter, Which taught me to forget my name, I now Struggle with light and my body, warring, torn Is fading slow, like the always arriving, down Turning solstice, the climates of the mind, Where it is digging the never ending shallow Hole only the spreading eternal yew, that I Planted, will ever know and only the Lazarus Moon shall ever rise above. I came to a courtyard of my own making, Was it dream that led me there or my eyes?

“do you love me?” What does it mean when you ask me? How can you not tell? If you can’t tell that I love you then maybe that’s just as well. You see I’ve never felt love before, just lust, pain or adoration, But I know it shouldn’t lie so easy with constant hesitation. “Do You Love Me!?” The question pierces my ear but my lips are not sincere The words don’t roll off my tongue as easy does my eye. My heart doesn’t beat in rhythm until the time we say goodbye. I need to breathe, let me breathe. But all I do is sigh. “DO YOU LOVE ME?!!” How can you spit wasps at me when all I want to speak is butterflies? Do you know what love is or is just easier to be cruel than to be kind? How can I tell you, with tears, with yells, with infidelity? How do I tell you I love you? With lies, broken promises and charity? “I’ll ASK YOU ONE LAST TIME, IF YOU DON’T ANSWER ME THEN IT’S FINAL.” Cocked gun at my head, pale blue vision turning scarlet red “DO.” It’s small led shaft pointed at my brain, no warmth left. No time to say I’m sorry just forced words to relieve me of my breath. “YOU” Tie a noose to the yew tree and kiss me on the cheek. It’ll bow down it’s branches and grow new roots. I’ll be ok, escaped to love another day. “LOVE” Pull the trigger, I won’t tell. You’ll never know, you can go to hell. “ME?” Yes, of course I do. Why do you even have to ask?

Flattery at Gun Point
Old Meg she was a Gipsy, And liv'd upon the Moors: Her bed it was the brown heath turf, And her house was out of doors. Her apples were swart blackberries, Her currants pods o' broom; Her wine was dew of the wild white rose, Her book a churchyard tomb. Her Brothers were the craggy hills, Her Sisters larchen trees-- Alone with her great family She liv'd as she did please. No breakfast had she many a morn, No dinner many a noon, And 'stead of supper she would stare Full hard against the Moon. But every morn of woodbine fresh She made her garlanding, And every night the dark glen Yew She wove, and she would sing. And with her fingers old and brown She plaited Mats o' Rushes, And gave them to the Cottagers She met among the Bushes. Old Meg was brave as Margaret Queen And tall as Amazon: An old red blanket cloak she wore; A chip hat had she on. God rest her aged bones somewhere-- She died full long agone!

Sitting closely to the lavender Who looks to the mackerel sky Right next to the bird feeder And has a golden twinkle in its eye Is the tiny Forget Me Not, bluer than blue With a tiny black dot. Sheltering under the striped bamboo In a cool shady spot. She knows a thing or two She comes back here twice a year Its roots buried with the Yew Where no gardener can interfere. When the sun appears And the clouds soften After the rain clears Which is not that often. The Forget Me Not will remember When the dark nights fall It will be watching by the wall. In early September

Closely To The Lavender
How is it three years, and I still have the same dreams? Can you explain that to me, lovely sparrow? Clutching olive branch and yew bark Grabbing in the dark for cold water, sweating down the glass Bitter chlorine and calcium built up on the face Mineral finger-paints, broken down with linseed oil and worn palms Your eyes behind those old glasses, working clay on the wheel Such pride in glazed pots collecting rain on the patio Paving stones laid in sand, the last few crooked on account of the cervesa Dry in the mouth like panting dogs, deadweight collapsed on threadbare carpet How do we convince ourselves that it is desirable to be alone? I hold you in my arms in a dream, whoever you are Pulling all the strands out of a wicker basket, creating uselessness Chattering keys on a laptop like shivering teeth Coughing, faceless, men, the embodiment of misery in this night The most beautiful pair of eyes I've ever seen, what other secrets lie beneath that hijab? Just a passing glance, most of the people we see, we will never see again How is it some make such a profound impression with nothing more than a smile? Lying under the Joshua tree, surrounded by dirt roads leading nowhere in particular Warm water mingles with the sweat on your lip A sigh that send chills through me The restless wind, nothing more

[Dedicated to Raymond Radclyffe] I am that hawk of gold Proud in adamantine poise On the pillars of tourqoise, See,beyond the starry fold, Where a darkling orb is rolled. There, beneath a grove of yew, Plays a babe. Should I despise Such a foam of gold, and eyes Burning beryline, so blue That the sun seems peeping through? Did I swwop, were Heaven amazed? With my beak I strike but once; Out there leap a million suns. Through the universe that blazed Screams theit light, and death is dazed. In my womb the babe may leap; Seek him not within my eye! Nor demand thou of me why I should plunge from crystal steep Like a plummet to the deep! See yon solitary star! What a world of blackness wraps Round it! Unimagined gaps! Let it be! Content thy car With the voyage to things that are! Nor, an thou perchance behold How I plunge and batten on Earth's exentrate carrion, Deem torquoise match midden-mould Or deny the Hawk of Gold!

The Hawk and the Babe
I can hear the song of the trees It floats from high above my head Whispering through the rippling leaves Being also heard by the birds perched As they begin to dance from branch to branch And then the birds also join in the song Listen to the story of the ancient Oak You shelter in the branches to hear it told Of a long time ago when fields grew wild Of the changing centuries that have passed on by How the Oak has lived through long forgotten battles It is a story shrouded in a history of hidden lore Changing colours as the very leaves start to paint How many artists have these trees always inspired The Mountain Ash and the Cedar so royal The tears unseen from the Weeping Willow The solitude of the lonesome Pine Gothic secrets in a cemetry of the Yew I planted a tree to remember those gone by Knowing as it grows, so their legend lives again How they changed my life by their own So now I hope that their song will be sung Even when I am gone and long forgotten And like that very tree, I know they will live on copyright Chris Smith December 12th 2009

Soul Of The Tree
This heaviness in my chest is a grim room. One cherished by a fool, something that will never come to light. It is a constantly dim room, never lightening, only strangled into night. There is a lone rocking chair in the room, cast out of yew. My madness here is aplenty and my silver thoughts a few. My heart is made of gray rotten walls and deadly nightshade. Maybe one day, when a certain light passes though the curtains, I will walk out the door.

Bring, in this timeless grave to throw, No cypress, sombre on the snow; Snap not from the bitter yew His leaves that live December through; Break no rosemary, bright with rime And sparkling to the cruel clime; Nor plod the winter land to look For willows in the icy brook To cast them leafless round him: bring No spray that ever buds in spring. Lines composed while climbing the left ascent of Brockley Coomb, May 1795 With many a pause and oft reverted eye I climb the Coomb’s ascent: sweet songsters near Warble in shade their wild-wood melody: Far off the unvarying Cuckoo soothes my ear. Up scour the startling stragglers of the flock That on green plots o’er precipices browse: From the deep fissures of the naked rock The Yew-tree bursts! Beneath its dark green boughs (’Mid which the May-thorn blends its blossoms white) Where broad smooth stones jut out in mossy seats, I rest:—and now have gained the topmost site. Ah! what a luxury of landscape meets My gaze! Proud towers, and Cots more dear to me, Elm-shadowed Fields, and prospect-bounding Sea. Deep sighs my lonely heart: I drop the tear: Enchanting spot! O were my Sara here.
