XV. TO HERACLES THE LION-HEARTED (9 lines) (ll. 1-8) I will sing of Heracles, the son of Zeus and much the mightiest of men on earth. Alcmena bare him in Thebes, the city of lovely dances, when the dark-clouded Son of Cronos had lain with her. Once he used to wander over unmeasured tracts of land and sea at the bidding of King Eurystheus, and himself did many deeds of violence and endured many; but now he lives happily in the glorious home of snowy Olympus, and has neat-ankled **** for his wife. (l. 9) Hail, lord, son of Zeus! Give me success and prosperity.

The Homeric Hymns: 15- To Heracles the Lion-Hearted
there once was this guy named oedipus of whom it was prophesied that his mother he'd marry, his father he'd **** at a place where three roads were tied. his mother and father discovered their fate and tried to dispose of their son but he ended up in corinthian lands and their efforts were all undone. then a drunk guy ruined his happy facade and to an oracle oedipus went who repeated to him the dank prophesy; he fled corinth, not taking a cent. while on his sojourn away from his home he encountered a party royale which rudely pushed him off of the road, and angered he slaughtered them all. then from that blood soaked three-way path he nonchalantly flew not knowing that his father was the man that he just slew. he continued his journey until he reached thebes where a sphinx held the city hostage so oedipus solved the bird-cat's lame rhyme and released thebes from its ******* as a reward, the people of thebes gave oedipus their widowed queen, unknowingly joining mother and son in a marriage that was unclean. after they ruled for twenty good years, during which four children came, a plague was induced by the sheltering of the man by whom was slain in searching him out, oedipus found that the murderer was really he, so long ago. the man he had killed at the place where were joined roads of three. but by finding this out, he also discovered that his wife and his mother were one. he gouged out his eyes after her suicide; in her own bedroom she was hung. as it turned out, oeddy exiled himself but the seeds of his misery were sewn. so he went to colonus and wandered around and this is the end.

I. TO DIONYSUS (21 lines) (1) ((LACUNA)) (ll. 1-9) For some say, at Dracanum; and some, on windy Icarus; and some, in Naxos, O Heaven-born, Insewn (2); and others by the deep-eddying river Alpheus that pregnant Semele bare you to Zeus the thunder-lover. And others yet, lord, say you were born in Thebes; but all these lie. The Father of men and gods gave you birth remote from men and secretly from white-armed Hera. There is a certain Nysa, a mountain most high and richly grown with woods, far off in Phoenice, near the streams of Aegyptus. ((LACUNA)) (ll. 10-12) '...and men will lay up for her (3) many offerings in her shrines. And as these things are three (4), so shall mortals ever sacrifice perfect hecatombs to you at your feasts each three years.' (ll. 13-16) The Son of Cronos spoke and nodded with his dark brows. And the divine locks of the king flowed forward from his immortal head, and he made great Olympus reel. So spake wise Zeus and ordained it with a nod. (ll. 17-21) Be favourable, O Insewn, Inspirer of frenzied women! we singers sing of you as we begin and as we end a strain, and none forgetting you may call holy song to mind. And so, farewell, Dionysus, Insewn, with your mother Semele whom men call Thyone. __________ The Homeric Hymns in the Hello Poetry collection are provided by: Online Medieval and Classical Library. The Homeric Hymns: 1- To Dionysus
The world’s great age begins anew, The golden years return, The earth doth like a snake renew Her winter weeds outworn; Heaven smiles, and faiths and empires gleam Like wrecks of a dissolving dream. A brighter Hellas rears its mountains From waves serener far; A new Peneus rolls his fountains Against the morning star; Where fairer Tempes bloom, there sleep Young Cyclads on a sunnier deep. A loftier Argo cleaves the main, Fraught with a later prize; Another Orpheus sings again, And loves, and weeps, and dies; A new Ulysses leaves once more Calypso for his native shore. O write no more the tale of Troy, If earth Death’s scroll must be— Nor mix with Laian rage the joy Which dawns upon the free, Although a subtler Sphinx renew Riddles of death Thebes never knew. Another Athens shall arise, And to remoter time Bequeath, like sunset to the skies, The splendour of its prime; And leave, if naught so bright may live, All earth can take or Heaven can give. Saturn and Love their long repose Shall burst, more bright and good Than all who fell, than One who rose, Than many unsubdued: Not gold, not blood, their altar dowers, But votive tears and symbol flowers. O cease! must hate and death return? Cease! must men **** and die? Cease! drain not to its dregs the urn Of bitter prophecy! The world is weary of the past— O might it die or rest at last!

the Sphinx, bringer of bad luck and destruction, half-woman and a lioness, she throws Oedipus a riddle outside of Thebes strangled with a curse: *what goes on fours in the morning, two at midday and three in the evening?* Oedpius, born a prince, feet-mangled and soon to be a king, well-traveled and bored and wishing for greater challenges than a riddling sphinx in his way, answers: *look at me in my prime, I walk on two and I crawled on fours and I shall walk with a staff soon enough...* that is the lot of my kind, humankind... and the Sphinx, not one to condone one better than itself, devours itself...

Antigone
It is 6:57. Startled am I, by the nights dream. Son of Jocasta, King of Thebes! I head t’ward the morning steam, To rid one’s eyes of the malaise A few stabs And my mind is clear. Abruptly, like fire on the agora. Desire veer me to vices! A cup of Columbian roast, with stoge in hand, I perch upon the balcony, With no intent to slip, I s’pose Each inhalation and sip Fulfill temporal desire beneath our aging celestial fire. 7:54 I am out the door, out out with it! It being me, me being it.

Oh Sophocles!
of course everyone knows the famous riddle that drew a one-word answer but the sphinx also threw another at Oedipus just outside Thebes: *a sister comes first and gives birth to another and the second consumes and then births the first* bored, the gifted Oedipus yawned his answer: day and night

the second riddle
Where did they hide a punch clock in the timeless solace? Or did they hide it all? Perhaps it’s difficult to see some mornings? We walked together to the school bus-stop, Billie Jean and I, …she seemed to have a thing for me although I don’t know why? I had a birth deformity; my feet were horned like snakes, …a scaly-green monstrosity that locked away my heart and mind, …so that; like the time clock, no one would ever see me. Even the trip to doctors in Thebes, it only made it worse, ...all the children in my town found out, and said that I was cursed, An ancient Greek named Urias claimed; That tranquil purple’s peaceful dawn had hid a pitcher of lies, And Zeus’ anger at the act brought down lightning from the skies, …and struck down the people just like me against a ballad of rainbow fusion sunrise. For the dreamy cosmos exercises as the pantomime he realizes, …the many fancies of his disguises that the panoptic mind has in its surmises, And in their parrying fall the distended fragments of the egg, …formed some like me who were formed quite queer, said to come from Apulian’s nightly fall of fear. Glass-bottled visions of events not clear all framed in a circle of Plato’s Great Year. My feet the scaly-green monstrosity which sealed my heart and mind, Billie said it was a gift from that Great Old Father Time, A spring of rocks, a great mountain, a whirlpool and a navel, I guess one day I’ll become them all, if and when I’m able!

1. My mother hates me! My father hates me! Oedipus screams to the stealthily silent Sphinx. He scatters riddles like laurel leaves waiting to be braided into a playwright's crown. It is too grandiose to fit his cracked. cramped cranium. His unconscious mind flies open like the Sphinx rocketing to the sky. Sacred haunches soar. Wings beat steadily to reach titanic heights. Blind to his murderous fate, Oedipus cannot know himself. Before the Delphic Oracle, his life shrivels, unexamined by his bleeding eyes. 2. Freud exults in triumph. Maternal love births eternal love: endless comfort and affection for the newly bloomed beloved. Soon, comfort metamorphoses into feral eros, unspeakable, unthinkable, beyond the bounds of catastrophic evil. Submerged desire sullies the chastest kiss. Jacosta embraces her son as her new living king, her husband's royal blood bubbling brazenly on the bitter road to Thebes. His hands stained, Oedipus strives to transmute his trauma as our own. We become him when Freud deigns to interpret our darkest, direst dreams. Blindly, we mimic him: carnal union with the mother, lethal rage against the father. Mourning Becomes Electra beckons to the wary second *** 3. The Sphinx belies its own riddle: How can prophecy spring from the sculpted, smooth stone of these perfect ******* Only blind Teiresias plumbs the depths of Oedipus' fate: Judgement lies blinded, action lies blinded by the ventricles of violence, the twisted telos of the mind.
