"syncretism" poems
the kindness of Christian does not leave
the Moslem or Jew to starve
but in feeding both-
tell the Moslem
to eat in his mosque
and the Jew
to eat in his synagogue
for while this food is healthy and good,
for Christian, Moslem, and Jew to share
syncretism will poison
your Christianity
thank one another, but eat as you worship
apart from one another

they're nothing alike, but they both rejected you in similar ways and that means that they're more alike than you'd like them to be. parallelism is everywhere and try all you want you can't avoid the syncretism of the universe, the constant assimilation and recreation, the mundane Phoenix, no ashes but still - rebirth. you know if you listen to drake right now, tucked under the covers and spooning the pillow like a lover liable to leave, you will be sad all night, possibly through the morning, bleary-eyed in chemistry and barely aware in rhetoric; you didn't do the assigned reading and haven't started looking at apartment leases yet. my roommate's shoulder is healing and mine is just now beginning to ache; parallelism is everywhere, and try as I might, I can never seem to outrun it.

paint the world in green, spiral love on henna bellies, toes;
paint it red and ravage hearts,
a poet sings it either way,
sudden and illuminating all another hue
something less than true if true were known,
something more, i call it when it's poetry,
but who am i, this poem, to judge all poems?
who am i to claim a rightful place, within a poem itself,
to demarcate times with halting rhymes...
how many times have i rhymed rhyme with time?
before it's expressed, it ravels in--in deeper--in the dark,
this glamor symbol syncretism
sometimes urgent, never fully formed
no words can turn within and label when their labels came to being signed--
but here i am, to sign, succumb and sign again at signs

A doubtful colonial vision
gathered souls for the Roman religion
this crass syncretism
gave birth to a schism
when Truth had a head-on collision

Should I write a poem about Halloween,
full of psychological horrors and gruesome things?
Like deep romantic wounds getting infected,
herpe kisses or Donald Trump getting elected?
I could lean on shuddery tropes, like haunted houses
or more real world threats, like cutthroat spouses.
I could make you look up scary looking words, like Syncretism.
gasp What caused that creek in the floor?!
Who’s that banging on the door?
Is that blood on that rag?
Is there a body in that bag?
Is that your husband in drag!?
Relax, have fun, chill-out,
Oh, better get a bowl of candy out.
Happy Halloween!

Allow me to release,
This vital piece of information,
You, to me
Are more than
Just,
Mere Infatuation.
The words you speak,
And the message behind them,
Affect my existence,
Deeper than when,
Your member is deep inside me.
This mutual syncretism,
Eases a new type of harmonious
Mechanism within me,
One which I've never felt
Quite similarily before.
Could it be?
Just you and me.
