the Silence became like an old lesson learned a broken heart intones a voiceless song resonating a refrain of Silent echoes in a voice that never heard a word yet spoke so clearly ... lingering in realms of subtle ambiance soundless remnants stacked neatly as building blocks;   another brick in a wall, already too tall to see beyond— growing like a bunker without a sense of safe harbor as the Silence became time and space, a stillness beset the melancholy air as if a world without song foreboding an unpredictable storm beget vestiges of broken windfall, reticent leftovers hushed after a gale s i l e n t l y an acorn fallen  — became a mighty Oak a wind-broke twig — became a weeping willow a neglected child — became mother nature's son the Silence became         a blind prophet — in its voice held forth smatterings of truth and undertones of an unrequited fool’s hope the Silence became a strong, abrupt rush of wind uttering voiceless exhalations of breath; a hovering dawn mist     befallen after a summer storm— surrounding all in all bedewed in a feigned peace ... the unabated sounds of silence become Jesse Stillwater ... the Silence became
a breath of fresh air tickles still-waters a lone swan's quill let fall, takes flight   carpe  diem ― nigh weightless, buoyantly skitters across the water, laissez faire; barely dimpling the shallow peace on a lake in the wood a wild feather's mindless pirouettes emanate from the steeping silence lapping  its superficial  refection   the true nature of wildness, unspoken freedom, an untamed wilder – ness skims the skinny waters seeking their own level; leaving no trace of  ever being  containable   like a breath of fresh air reinvigorates unconquerable souls touching in the conscious moment ― a gentle passing breeze arousing a rogue gust Jesse Stillwater 01    June   2018

Driving up mountain miles of washboard switchbacks; jarring the dusty rearview mirror in my mind: "but don't look back in anger"   ... I heard you say stuck in the cloud of dust befogging my daydream back somewhere thereabouts the washed out bridge that tore us apart like a flash flood It was so long ago since you were running and I was hiding in plain sight, from what the storm in my eyes did tell Mindful — you were only watching the growing distance gather; finding what you didn't lose looking back to see    what you can't forget — like a hesitant child reluctantly wondering if anyone was still looking back at you ―  still running away from each passing storm Jesse Stillwater June   2018

reflection in a dusty rearview mirror
Out here in the fields of the distance whither the wind blows the silence further afield; roughhewn footprints show a windswept pathway   from whence feral feet lightly trod    Only the passing whispers chase after the gypsy wind: that the silence be in quire, placed aloft like a sigh, pealing through the gentle sway of sweet grass' hush There are no walls need echo an evanescent wind-song as each breath of earthen psalm vanishes lilting into the crystalline quietude colour; The callused patience still held in these hands is frayed and tattered, but hope heals stronger than a ream of paper wings to fly away And I'm mindful I'm not alone again, lost in a lingering silent storm — pensively listening — enraptured aneath all the big skies hold                       Jesse Stillwater

The belated summer sky is alive with a  D r a g o n f l y ballet Beneath,.. the rain parched sod lay sullied, cracked open by an unsated thirstiness awaiting the painted autumn days and the cleansing rain's renewal A lace-winged hatch rises skyward — meandering  airborne — drifting upwards like a burst of dust dissipating in an invisible cloud of eventide's silent breath Darting shadows hover above a seeker's curiosity     just this side the   softening sunset backdrop A synthesis of fluid motion   – darting kinesis –     swift agile fliers steal away over the thirsty pond; their mesmerizing beauty enchants as the dimming dusk falls silent —- embellishing the unrelenting ending    another summer's  imminent curtain call; reminding how inexorable-time is only a contrived human notion, a recurring extrapolation   of passing  seasons Heightening awareness: how we too are only passing through these unholdable moments    coming to know     we cannot stop    how life unfolds The raindrops will quench the pond's aching thirst again one fall someday...   — hereafter — there will be another beauty of dragonflies some other eyes will see preying on another burgeoning gossamer-winged hatch           and another beckoning autumn when the dragonflies hover below the gazing totems      in the treetops Jesse Stillwater ... . He liked to gather up the silence in the springtime   Pack it up and carry it in an old timeworn leather rucksack From a distance it looked like he was a senseless fool   Picking up handfuls of nothing; then putting it in an empty jar No mind is paid to the fleeting glance in the corner of a stranger's eyes   They were out of reach from the box he was living in He kept gathering up the endless silence like missing pieces of a lost soul    It seemed to be everywhere ―  and in it heard,  the only voice he knew Supposing all his thoughts pondered come forth of silence   Often resting sheltered beneath branches where it grew on the trees ― It wasn't just the songbird that broke the stillness in dappled sunlight   It was the dearth of love that rivers through a strong heartbeat’s silenced words ... gathering silence
I’ve finally stopped writing unrequited letters; there were too many wasted breaths left unsent Lapsing intentions befallen on timeworn tawny crumpled  pages; aging like spent flowers in fading earth tones and rumpled paper regrets Multi-hued words uttered— mummers of voiceless exhalations spoken without a sound; indelible spilled ink left behind, lays fallow for so long A love once new,  and a growing silent ache— a hungry heart left for dead—Déjà vu We leave a lot behind, fallen leaves in unspoken ink a restless soul laid bare by a passing moment's random gust; atrophied like unwritten poetry stifled stillborn in a wadded up paper lament jesse stillwater ... crumpled pages
Time is fleeting as the spring river runoff that gushes out to sea A heart trickles out a moment, minute by minute, in a timeless ink drop; unmeasurable expanse      immured in spilled ink ―    manifest in the lexicon of poetry For only purged words cannot quench this thirst that is loneliness; it's a hunger that gnaws like an unsatisfiable ache ― a starving emptiness all hearts do one day taste Left in the sight of doubt and eyes that fail to believe what they see lain fallow in the silent indifference Lost in a lingering void unburied all around, bespoken out loud alone in plain sight a feigned understanding; reticent letters shape reluctant words to hold forth enunciated breathe The only words that still echo unstilted ― uttered  words indelibly felt from lips once sweet as daybreak dew     upon musing tongue ― tasting the only voiceless truth that ever broke my heart a vanishing wave that moved an ocean    deeply ... This Thirst that is Loneliness
. I’m just a lonely traveler    on this earth Sometimes it feels as if I'm waiting for the sky to fall with each passing breathe        of wind    Standing alone, a windswept tree    leans downwind; conspicuously wrought,    naked and bowed    by the grinding       silent forces   at nature's whim Rootless tumbleweeds roll by randomly:     broken off, spinning clockwise, never looking back, timeworn and tired of resisting the prevailing     high desert wind and its unheld temper Rattling the tinder    dry sagebrush like songless wind-chimes;     voiceless fugitives wreathing a bellowing silence     Jesse Stillwater

A windswept tree
The woman in the window   Looks out beyond the glass Beyond the reach of her whispers   Befogged upon windowpanes glance Farther  than  the  bounds   Her own breathe imbues Out of reach her long fingered touch   Tracing her murmurs on looking glass dew Grasping for the shadowed artifacts   Only time does nonchalantly drift past Perched alone upon a cloud of silence   Her thoughts eddy in soundless swirl Spinning like dizzying shadows   Swallowed by a thirst for light The other side of window beckons   Only she knows she’s looking out through a sigh; Seeing no one familiar looking back ―     For what hidden jewels within abide She dreams of dancing leafless by daylight   Twirling beneath the whispering willows sway Just a step away from being free   Just a step away from feeling alive With first step beyond imprisoning hesitation   Crossing over the threshold of a dream Through a liberating portal outside the glass   Just on the other side of the windowsill ...                   Jesse e Stillwater

The Woman in the Window
Healing leaves are now disrobed branches on the edge of this wilderness. Many tall Douglas Fir stand sentinel over 100 foot tall amazing grace — the fleeting leaves expose the beauty of the moss clad scaffolds adorned with a lime-grey lichen lace Nature is my refuge — solid ground to stand in this harmony and peacefulness. The midnight sun is heading north These bags are packed with dreams and the memories of who I’ve been; To scatter forth like gathered seeds on fallow hope, strewn at the mercy of the winds The genesis of spring unravels the knotted darkness Another winter’s aftermath hidden back on the back shelf The distance between back then and now,  is widening each  Dawn  to  Dusk A  gust  of  sunlight plashes ripples across the still waters of  depthless  peace and, my hands are no longer tied behind  my  back by winter's grasp Seasons  oft  do  change perennial  as  the  tides But I don’t want to see another ocean runaway; I don’t want to know how another fleeting moment ends Jesse Stillwater

A place to call home
Not many people know where the old road goes I’m older now and it seems there are more and more    paved roads that lead to nowhere —    most of the time As a kid, living miles up   a rough potholed, country road — a hike away from the edge a small town   out in the sticks,.. you come to know onliness, blind to a journey alone    I never stepped on cracks in a town sidewalk —   never learned what   "superstitious" was,     like the other kids         from town It wasn't the cracks   in the sidewalk I feared to tread; steppin' on 'em breaks nothing   already broken — It was just all so different than the long walk home where that old road goes — grandma always said: *"follow the creek upstream; it'll always lead you back   where you belong"*    The washboards in the steep narrow road up the hill, were like   muddy stair steps in the rainy season Sometimes I followed on up the creek below to the upper log bridge      swimmin' hole,.. where I learned to listen to the sweet melody of unclouded days; and for a moment I thought I belonged      I still haven't found my way out   of this memory I’m holding onto — because life is just an unstoppable season, passing by     on its own;    like the way      rainwater   in the swollen creek bed flows:    And I'm just another passing September no one will remember —    most of the time Jesse Stillwater ... An earth sized boulder dislodged with the thunder Unleashing catacombs   of terrestrial darkness lay compressed beneath it for a thousand years The hidden ancients heard its soul hold forth;   their rumbling silence     ―  laid bare ― They heard its voice rises up with the ears of a new-born fawn Beguiling roots, solid as a rock, hold together like dark matter A soul weight beyond measure shouldering the torn of a divided heart Heaviness ... O' the heaviness ― just a platitude for what you feel when it all comes tumbling down to the ground Venerable times immemorial: an urging silence pushing down to the grave, trying to unlearn the things never known about the hearts we leave behind Jesse Stillwater

The wind roars — then stills to listen to the spoken grandeur from the soul of the angry autumn sky Its quickly moving grandeur moving  way beyond a trailing moment's wake    Change often goes voiceless — the autumn wind needs not consent to bare the trees; disguising all symmetry of yesterdays fleeting glance Overarching that which can no longer be    as it once was — A bitter cold gust preys on this aging bark stirring to the roots of my soul Will true nature’s   powerful essence ever reshape the scars these wind-whipped human feather's mask ?     The wind roars —    then stills to listen ,... and I wonder why I can’t be the change I see Stillwater in the wind Jesse Stillwater ... Stillwater in the wind
Flaming bridges up in smoke— ashes scattered in the wind Requiem to passing yesterdays; vestige of all that’s lost — bestrewn in prevailing currents amongst the drifting autumn leaves No smoke on rising waters — lingers between growing distant shores Untamed rivers rising rinse away the taste of sparks spake from silent tongues Portaging all that once was with all that could never remain,  back to the briny deep  An uncontainable rivers pilgrimage — entombing reverently ancient fractals of being Sowing feral rivers' ashes — sacrificial scatterings of destiny washed afar unto the flotsam on shoreless stormy  seas Jesse Stillwater

Burning rivers
The full moon caught a glimpse where the billowed clouds parted Saucer size Dogwood blossoms echoed an urging reflection through wide open window ; the diffused moonlight reached in touching the open palms enduring in an empty void lay down beside Softly burnished reflections lighten blanched flesh petals swaying in the wakened      spring cadence Rhinestone memories tethered from somewhere above ; as if manipulating puppet strings dangling down through the seesaw cloud gap ― scattering candlelit sequins like unmapped constellations brushed by the moonlight in the dale of your leafless ******* The fragrant breeze of your memory gathers a sweetest taste, teasing wishful thirsty lips into a gentle smile ... Tracing unbounded memories with wandering fingertips  upon your intimate canvas oasis in my mind Fallen petals floating gently across still waters induced by whispered breeze ; quiet reminders that ripple the mesmerizing silence with the lonely breath an unheard evanescent sigh   The open window let the moonlight in, illuminating lingering shadows of the past ... you feel the waft of spring breathe ... but you just can't help where the wind blows Jesse e. Moonlit Dogwood Petals
There's a sharp frosty switchback that never sees the sun in winter skies of blue. The frost heave cut-bank rocks tumble down to the side of the road,  in the ice shard mottled ditch lay frozen stiff Tall Sitka spruce marbled gray shadows mat the sparsely traveled   corridor, paved with potholes, where the roads have no names Sometimes listening quietly to the bare stillness, there are   rhetorical questions heard in the silent reverie's say:                         "Have you ever been afraid?" The tree-line gaps above the jagged gray stone ravine, disappearing   down the rugged mountain shade, falling into the pillow-top fog bank blanketing the canyon's murmurs below — headed towards the ocean Crystalline spring waters gurgle up roadside — out of nowhere,   where tired boots stand in reverent contemplation as it all sings out  harmoniously to the trees in the key of silence;   it was there   in a gust of restless forbearance heard the frozen peacefulness  say:                          "Have you ever felt alone?" Gathering a deep breath of marbled gray shadows, silence bears   a loud holler's scorn — echoing back and forth down canyon walls, with the spirit of a voice a multitude strong,  evanescent                              as winter's outgoing tide.                       January 2019 — Jesse Stillwater

winter silence echoes
Marooned  land-locked     on  island  earth Born with an orphan’s     unknowable ache Born with an empath heart – always feeling too much – mystic receptors wide awake     in a highly sensitive soul It’s as if I've walked along       forever alone,     one step at a time,     lost in a restless nebula from the earth to the moon Consciously dreaming       to steal away,  bearing the weight of the sky,  upwards over the mountain, away from these chains          that bind     The maelstroms echo behind silenced, probing eyes with an unsated thirst       to be wanted     dead or otherwise: Never understanding     the reasons why, spinning around in my head; where "once upon a time"         was hidden,         buried alive               A lifetime spent trying     to unlearn the things     I wish I’d never     sought to know,     clinging to the love I've touched in my life   evermore enwombed        in my heart     Passing milestones: walking another barefoot mile passing so many locked doors     without keyholes – way outside the lines –     Choking on all     the latent words       lay fallow,        left unsaid  Always looking for something dreamt but seldom manifest  Growing so tired and weary with no one standing by my side;   no one to lay down beside me     to take a rest for awhile Just another chapter in a timeless same old story;   another dark star       burned – out       – vanished – into the utter obscurity of a sky so close and yet        so far away...
