Forth into the forest straightway All alone walked Hiawatha Proudly, with his bow and arrows, And the birds sang round him, o’er him, “Do not shoot us, Hiawatha!” Sang the robin, the Opechee, Sang the blue bird, the Owaissa, “Do not shoot us, Hiawatha!” Up the oak tree, close beside him, Sprang the squirrel, Adjidaumo, In and out among the branches, Coughed and chattered from the oak tree, Laughed, and said between his laughing, “Do not shoot me, Hiawatha!” And the rabbit from his pathway Leaped aside, and at a distance Sat ***** upon his haunches, Half in fear and half in frolic, Saying to the little hunter, “Do not shoot me, Hiawatha!” But he heeded not, nor heard them, For his thoughts were with the red deer; On their tracks his eyes were fastened, Leading downward to the river, To the ford across the river, And as one in slumber walked he, Hidden in the alder bushes. There he waited till the deer came, Till he saw two antlers lifted, Saw two eyes look from the thicket, Saw two nostrils point to windward, And a deer came down the pathway, Flecked with leafy light and shadow. And his heart within him fluttered, Trembled like the leaves above him, Like the birch-leaf palpitated, As the deer came down the pathway. Then, upon one knee uprising, Hiawatha aimed an arrow; Scarce a twig moved with his motion, Scarce a leaf was stirred or rustled, But the wary roebuck started, Stamped with all his hoofs together, Listened with one foot uplifted, Leaped as if to meet the arrow; Ah! the singing, fatal arrow, Like a wasp it buzzed and stung him! Dead he lay there in the forest, By the ford across the river; Beat his timid heart no longer, But the heart of Hiawatha Throbbed and shouted and exulted, As he bore the red deer homeward, And Iagoo and Nokomis Hailed his coming with applauses. From the red deer’s hide Nokomis Made a cloak for Hiawatha, From the red deer’s flesh Nokomis Made a banquet in his honor. All the village came and feasted, All the guests praised Hiawatha, Called him Strong-heart, Soan-ge-taha! Called him Loon-Heart, Mahn-go-taysee!

PARNELL'S FUNERAL UNDER the Great Comedian's tomb the crowd. A bundle of tempestuous cloud is blown About the sky; where that is clear of cloud Brightness remains; a brighter star shoots down; What shudders run through all that animal blood? What is this sacrifice? Can someone there Recall the Cretan barb that pierced a star? Rich foliage that the starlight glittered through, A frenzied crowd, and where the branches sprang A beautiful seated boy; a sacred bow; A woman, and an arrow on a string; A pierced boy, image of a star laid low. That woman, the Great Mother imaging, Cut out his heart. Some master of design Stamped boy and tree upon Sicilian coin. An age is the reversal of an age: When strangers murdered Emmet, Fitzgerald, Tone, We lived like men that watch a painted stage. What matter for the scene, the scene once gone: It had not touched our lives. But popular rage, Hysterica passio dragged this quarry down. None shared our guilt; nor did we play a part Upon a painted stage when we devoured his heart. Come, fix upon me that accusing eye. I thirst for accusation. All that was sung. All that was said in Ireland is a lie Bred out of the c-ontagion of the throng, Saving the rhyme rats hear before they die. Leave nothing but the nothingS that belong To this bare soul, let all men judge that can Whether it be an animal or a man. The rest I pass, one sentence I unsay. Had de Valera eaten parnell's heart No loose-lipped demagogue had won the day. No civil rancour torn the land apart. Had Cosgrave eaten parnell's heart, the land's Imagination had been satisfied, Or lacking that, government in such hands. O'Higgins its sole statesman had not died. Had even O'Duffy -- but I name no more -- Their school a crowd, his master solitude; Through Jonathan Swift's clark grove he passed, and there plucked bitter wisdom that enriched his blood.

XXVIII. TO ATHENA (18 lines) (ll. 1-16) I begin to sing of Pallas Athene, the glorious goddess, bright-eyed, inventive, unbending of heart, pure ****** saviour of cities, courageous, Tritogeneia. From his awful head wise Zeus himself bare her arrayed in warlike arms of flashing gold, and awe seized all the gods as they gazed. But Athena sprang quickly from the immortal head and stood before Zeus who holds the aegis, shaking a sharp spear: great Olympus began to reel horribly at the might of the bright-eyed goddess, and earth round about cried fearfully, and the sea was moved and tossed with dark waves, while foam burst forth suddenly: the bright Son of Hyperion stopped his swift-footed horses a long while, until the maiden Pallas Athene had stripped the heavenly armour from her immortal shoulders. And wise Zeus was glad. (ll. 17-18) And so hail to you, daughter of Zeus who holds the aegis! Now I will remember you and another song as well.

I close my eyes and listen To the soft sound of your voice as You weave a new tale for me to hear I see the pictures evolve before my eyes As characters begin to appear You take me by the heart To places we dream to be Painting our lives with your words Endearing you more to me Other men may have touched my skin You....have touched my soul Opening my mind again to believe Life can once again be whole. Dreams are made to live Love is made to be shared Tired of fighting against my grain Searching for the one who cares In the moment I ceased the fight Heart and soul sprang forth Then what does God hand to me But you...my one true north. My True North
Telling the story of passion, death, and virtue. Tracking deception with freedom's lies. The Traveler passed through that timeless veil between here and there, the spaces between the fantastic delusional minds. That a hunter has when tracking down an accomplished plan. Caught in a Blue Galactic Storm. The Unicorn said. *"Mind your own business the rest of us don't give a **** Yet just as the wheels of the stars keep on turning-- on the heels of a planet surfing the Universes tides. There will always be cycles- and sometimes it happens that they collide-such is the power of the Muse. My story is one of tragedy and despair, with malice and Discord, Regret and Guilty Shame. Swallowed by the darkness empty and Dead. Yet out of nothing sprang Life-- fear to Hope Hate to Love, Recklessness to Responsibility, now I'm changing the tide. With arrows sharp words that fill the Night sky. Once again finding the Magic in these threads-weaving a world I've known and dread. Always mocked by the Queen of Hearts, hunting, desiring; "Metamorphosis" But Truth and Memory found the way. A ghost shell that’s crossed the Styx of the Grave, The Muse inside no longer be spelled drifting now to unsure shores, Just as Dante mapped out Hell, so will I my tale: Psyche (Human Soul) captive to the Ice of Pluto-shed no tears. This prison made flesh by mortal woe-lost, forgotten, But Morpheus came to me then. "You still have your Dreams." Then the madness came looming. The facts blurred and suddenly Phoebe appeared: with a playful far off expression. "Oh Persephone, mourn the falling leaves, for it is the last of them you will see.”

Remember, that chaos first was a primordial deity, Chaos; the nothingness from which all else sprang headfirst and heartfelt, half-naked and handsome, hook, line and... halibut. All of this, every measurable moment, every particle, every object set forth in motion sprang from a void so harmoniously as if the absence of everything was kissed sudden by the presence of something. Often depicted with wings, a bow, and a quiver of arrows, Cupid, son of Venus - goddess of love, son of Mercury - god of trade, his story, almost identical in Greek and in Roman mythology, his story, about a couple of gods who seem so inherently human by nature, jolted by jealousy, dumbstruck by beauty, hellbent on immortality, his story has been hallmarked as red hot velvet rose petal fine wine and symmetrical hearts. Wrapped in tin foil red ribbons bitter-sweetly sugarcoated dipped in thin layer of chocolate taste-tested and lover approved. Remember that scene in Hook where Tinkerbell leaves her footprints on Peter's chest, well that's you and that's me-- touch me where my heart beats because I don't ever wanna be a lost boy. I wanna grow up like a good bedtime story with morals and purpose, I wanna have meaning. You might say that Cupid found himself. You might say that Psyche found her soul. You might say that Tinkerbell was just faking it-- with the clapping. Truth is, we can never know the whole story-- the complete truth. Problem is, we think we can and act like we do. So the only time we mean what we say is the first time we say it, every utterance thereafter is just an attempt at recreating a moment. I love you is a paraphrase that deserves three separate ellipses because there's a lot left unsaid. I (distinctively remember shadow-boxing with) love (against a star-dotted sky anchored to a moonlight so vibrant it can only be compared to) you (and your tidal waves). And that's where I fell headfirst and handsome. I (was punched-drunk by a kiss so breathless that it spiked my dopamine to a volume that can only be described as) love (in that every time my neurotransmitters feel) you (they spin themselves dizzy and dance to your science). There was a moment in the absence of everything when I was kissed silent by the presence of something. Hold me to your breastplate. I don't ever wanna go back to the void. 02/09/2010

Hallmarked & Handsome

THEY were calling certain styles of whiskers by the name of "lilacs." And another manner of beard assumed in their chatter a verbal guise Of "mutton chops," "galways," "feather dusters." Metaphors such as these sprang from their lips while other street cries Sprang from sparrows finding scattered oats among interstices of the curb. Ah-hah these metaphors-and Ah-hah these boys-among the police they were known As the ***** Dozen and their names took the front pages of newspapers And two of them croaked on the same day at a "necktie party" ... if we employ the metaphors of their lips.

Alley Rats
You woke me in the thin dawn. Like a riot of rain in a bleached dry summer. small green shreds of shrub sprang from my heart as tumbling birdsong might litter the long pale sky. your voice came drifting through the shallow line And I let the sound seep like a soft assault on my senses. I hear the words and picture your lips Folding around the consonants like a dance. I hear your breath carry the words and taste the phrases That linger on your tongue as if to speak them in a kiss These words that spin this cloth of gold in whispered utterings This silken tease with a wild sprinkle of kisses and anatomy. And would my words soften your eye and entice your body With fevered adventures seeking to be sated with a touch? Could you taste the blessings erupting from my tongue? Would you ache inside far beneath the longings of the flesh? It seems that every cell is sighing a simpering listless want to be captured by the haunting breath of a lover’s call.

Phone Call
Far away in ancient Jerusalem Stood a garden, long, long ago Home to giant oaks and figs And plants and shrubs of every kind. On every season, from time to time Merrily they would burst into bloom Filling the air with fragrance sweet And fuelling the hearts with joy and cheer. Amid the riot of flashing shades Where Poppies and Pansies held their heads In a corner, there a Lily stood, Sans scent and sans grandeur. A poor loner never once noticed Nor skilled to steal the show, Those, brilliant in shade and shape With contempt openly quipped ‘It’s such a shame She grows among us With such pallid shade And nothing to rave’, ‘Lilies are such lazy lot Giving only seasonal blooms’ Rang aloud their haughty comments Rashly blurted out and blunt The poor Lily wilted in shame Wishing she had never been born. Late that evening, through the garden Into the newly dug up grave A band of people came with lights Bearing someone cut and scathed. With blood oozing, drop by drop From wounds, left by piercing nails The body, carefully wrapped in linen Was the body of Jesus - Son of God The one who bore the sins of the world And courted the most accursed of deaths. The body embalmed was laid inside And sealed with a giant block of stone Soldiers posted to guard the tomb And every vigil so prudently kept. Early by dawn, three days hence While it was still very dark From inside the tomb had come Rumbling sounds and a blinding light. Flowers en masse blinked their eyes Beheld a man, gently walking out The wounds still fresh on his palm And the linen that swaddled, lying behind. As they watched this queer sight In awful amazement, they did see A host of Lilies, white as snow Far more beautiful than any of them Bowing their heads in reverential glee And singing Hosanna to the Lord of Life. All the flora in silent shock Sighted from whence the Lilies came They sprang unforeseen in those spots Where drops of blood from his body fell Then onwards, without fail April sees the grandeur and grace, Of snowy lilies - those delicate blooms Sprouting suddenly from the crust of the Earth Joggling their heads in whiffing breeze, And giving delight to all who behold.

As the Thunderbolt God Jupiter Saturn’s brother Pursued his loves in disguise The Goddess Hera sat upon her throne Irritated and plotting Gazing with angry jealous eyes Oh, courageous intelligent Athena ****** Goddess of the hunt Dare the foolish to cast eyes upon her unclothed Under the sentence of a tortuous death Its said by many she was not birthed But sprang surprisingly from her father’s head The lovely Aphrodite Would melt the hearts of many a man Who would offer up their life For but a faint touch of her hand The Light God Apollo admirer of the word, reciting poetry Pluck the gold lyres delicate strings While the sea god Poseidon’s twelve daughters Mermaids Dressed in dripping seaweed began to sing Ares of the bold god of war Feared conqueror and great warrior Planted flowers As was his custom in the spring Artemis in fervent haste strung her magical bow For it was pursuit that stirred her blood It flowed through her veins Aged Roman wine Running stags through shadowy woods The gods of the Kings The Gods of the people To whom many sacrifices were made Lived thousands of years beyond the lifespan of man So, say the storytellers of olden times and past days All right Reserved. The Gods
She had been at sea for three decades her first voyage at age eighteen a week after her marriage in the year of our Lord 1883 She married a sailing man captain of his own ship handsome, bearded and tall a fine commander of his men as they searched the sea for whales She loved life at sea and could imagine no other the motion of the ship the sounds of the rigging and the sails the quiet companionship with her husband every evening She was beloved by her husband’s men whom she mothered well having had no sons of her own but nurtured and healed patched and sewed bloodied and broken hearts and men Often she came out on deck for she knew when they would find them and though she was in the stern and the lookout was high in the crow's nest she saw many whales they missed She thrilled each time she saw them awed by their sheer size marveling at their strength humbled by their beauty careful to hide her feelings Sometimes she could feel when a whale would blow and she would call to the first mate so the men looked at her as the whale passed unseen Most times she silently prayed willing the lookout to search the wrong spot of ocean and felt again the pang of disloyalty to her husband for he commanded a whaling ship But then the lookout's call came "Thar she blows!" and the men sprang to action taking after the whale in longboats while she escaped below She had seen before the killing she would not watch again too many whales succumbed to exploding harpoons and a death horrifyingly cruel And she wondered what would happen if only whales could scream . . .

She had been at sea for three decades her first voyage at age eighteen a week after her marriage in the year of our Lord 1883 She married a sailing man captain of his own ship handsome, bearded and tall a fine commander of his men as they searched the sea for whales She loved life at sea and could imagine no other the motion of the ship the sounds of the rigging and the sails the quiet companionship with her husband every evening She was beloved by her husband’s men whom she mothered well having had no sons of her own but nurtured and healed patched and sewed bloodied and broken hearts and men Often she came out on deck for she knew when they would find them and though she was in the stern and the lookout was high in the crow's nest she saw many whales they missed She thrilled each time she saw them awed by their sheer size marveling at their strength humbled by their beauty careful to hide her feelings Sometimes she could feel when a whale would blow and she would call to the first mate so the men looked at her as the whale passed unseen Most times she silently prayed willing the lookout to search the wrong spot of ocean and felt again the pang of disloyalty to her husband for he commanded a whaling ship But then the lookout's call came "Thar she blows!" and the men sprang to action taking after the whale in longboats while she escaped below She had seen before the killing she would not watch again too many whales succumbed to exploding harpoons and a death horrifyingly cruel And she wondered what would happen if only whales could scream . . .

A list of louts came, failed, and went Before Bassanio played his turn... Poor rich Portia's patience spent, Nerissa's lady solace yearned Antonio, Bassanio, a troubled pair A wily shark a loan arranged, Whose bite, though small, Beyond compare aimed deepest To the matters of the heart. Antonio, about to lose his fortune, Bemoaned the losing of a friend, The foiling of a fortune, sunk. Shylock, certain of his pound of flesh, Summarily dismissed by gentile gender-bending, Played as a fool by a woman posing as a man, Who drove a lawyer's visage in a Portia. All ended well, at least for "Christian" men... Life sweetened by the turning of a Jew, No matter his conversion at duress... Straight away Portia and Nerissa turned back A ******* borrower who had landed on his feet, And sprang their traps to tame their husbands' heat.

This is what animates me The force to set the motion of my soul Gears that grind, thoughts that whir, the sustenance of something holy. I do not think I sprang from Adam’s Rib I think I must have been struck into the ground like a stone A thread of lightning from the leaden sky, And the mechanics that rose after Demanded fuel, demanded heat And thus was born in the cooling core of me This mad desire, this stumbling, ceaseless search For words to light a fire in my head For eyes to light a fire in my bones For some weapon of beauty Some flaming sword A tool- nothing more- To sift among the dust and grit of time To stoke the embers and evoke a spark Prodding, prospecting As for gold Searching for a remnant which still burns Softly, feeble, buried but unquenched I chase the fire For it must always be: It cannot die But cannot be held It is escaped and never captured, Only felt and lost, an infinite second- A running step to overtake itself.

Eve
Sprang forth with no branches or leaves. Small roots. Bore mangoes, papayas,guava and bananas. Hybrid, mid limb grafting. The trunk is a figment but it stands non less. You see my family tree never was and always will be. A roadside shade with low hanging fruit. Was never planted.It was a deposit from the bowels of an exotic bird of the jungles that sampled at leisure the offerings of the rain forests. The Hardtack and marmalade came on ships with the kings business Mixed with the Nigerian Fu-Fu ,the Aztec maize the Mayan legumes. and all points of the compass. Old Joe Denegri, The Blancaneaux , The Cattouse, The Melado, The Pinks The Flowers,The Orozco and more. And boundless from the ***** of opportunity. Piecemeal and untethered. But it is the tree that I must cling to. However rough the bark. The sap runs heavy and slow in the humid Belizean heat.To meet the earth. Cool breezes blow a haunting disharmony. A sweet unity in chaos. The soil is rich,pungent and forgiving. Soon, A bell tolls in the distance. The Sea mists my dreams. A stairway of coconut fronds to azure skies. Nighttime smells like creation. The still slackened pace. The small rat race. Tempest in a teapot. Urban-rural. Coolie gal. Creole boy. New Chinese. Old African. Ubiquitous Espania. Garinagu. Mosquito coast. Children of Mennon. Old Basque faces. Things we call races left with small traces of what? My tree, her tree, histree. I am you and you are me. I see me in your face and you see me. We are and will continue to be. Blended. a hybrid. An orchid wild.

How long will our bewildered heirs marooned in possessions not theirs puzzle at disposing of these three cunning feignings of hard candy in glass- the striped little pillowlike mock-sweets, the flared end-twists as of transparent paper? No clue will be attached, no trace of the sunny day of their purchase, at a glittering shop a few doors up from Harry's Bar, a disappointing place for all its testaments from Hemingway. The Grand Canal was also aglitter while the lesser canals lay in the shade like snakes, flicking wet tongues and gliding to green rendezvous. The immaculate salesgirl, in her aloof Italian succulence, sized us up, a middle-aged American couple, as unserious shoppers who, still half jet-lagged, would cling to their lire in the face of any enchanted vase or ethereal wineglass that might shatter in the luggage going home. Yet we wanted something, something small .... This? No ... How much is ten thousand? Dizzy, at last we decided. She wrapped the three glass candies, the cheapest items in the shop, with a showy care worthy of crown jewels-tissue, tape, and tissue again sprang up beneath her blood-red fingernails, plus a jack-in-the-box-shaped paper bag adorned with harlequin lozenges, sad though she surely was, on her feet waiting all day for a wild rich Arab, a compulsive Japanese. Grazie, signor ... grazie, signora ... ciao. Nor will our thing-weary heirs decipher the little repair, the reattached triangle of glass from the paper-imitating end-twist, its mending a labor of love in the cellar, by winter light, by the man of the house, mixing transparent epoxy and rigging a clever small clamp as if to keep intact the time that we, alive, had spent in the feathery bed at the Europa e Regina.

Naked pictures of God on my nightstand, Dry bones of Moses painted on my button down shirt screaming, “to be or not to be” is not an English word. In the daze of the thoughts of Neurology, I saw a man kick a bucket full of Starbucks giftcards down the avenue street. He screamed in pain as he watched the bucket tumble and roll down the street, blessing every Bohemian with a slight cold. Naked pictures of God on my nightstand, I dreamt about a land before man where the Oxygen that sprang from the pores of flowers sang a sweet death. Where dishwashers are saints, for afterall, man will not be if not for food. Where books are written not to be read, but for the sake of Orange trees that will grow in the future. I once wore a poker face to a funeral and laughed at the man in the casket because the souls he had underneath him were two left feet. *We all once had naked pictures of God on our nightstands but lost it after Einstein   Lost the fried chicken war of 1812 to Isaac Newton.*

Yet, my pretty sportive friend, Little is’t to such an end That I praise thy rareness! Other dogs may be thy peers Haply in these drooping ears, And this glossy fairness. The Day came slow—till Five o’clock
Black waters, cruel heart, The Kelpie sits upon his throne For eternity, doomed to play his part And wait in vain for his one true own. His servants are the poisonous eel, Sea serpent, corpse, and dead man's ghost Of his victims - though no pain they feel, In death must earn his wrath the most. In daylight was this lord's last goodness Spurned and cast to mocking sea; From damsel's touch this heart of darkness Sprang, shall remain eternally So: Once a time of cool recklessness Brought the Kelpie ashore as the sun descended, In pursuit of the voice as sweet as goodness That sang ere the song of day had ended. The Kelpie left the waters For love of land-born daughter And laid upon her lips a kiss, And wove her his enchantment: -- "Tell me, maiden, do you weep For Love's encounter sorely missed? Do you not know the deep seas seek Such tears as yours - they shall be kissed "Beyond remembrance of those sad eyes, Without recall of downcast smile (The sea must love you in disguise Only to scare sweet sorrows awhile.) "Then let my voice your heart caress. Come, take these hands to lead you hence Into the surf, leave all duress That land can offer; Love's light is sent "To guide you, though the soulless waters Close above your grief-bowed head. Fascinated with the life that sprang from ground. Humming, he meanders from each sparkling leaf. Catching a wind breeze drifted by belief.

Elves are Real
I left this carnival, or so it seemed to be. My views have Changed. Good or Bad? I won't be the one, To say in the coming years. Girls with hula hoops, Boys watching in awe, How fantastic the Colors seemed to swirl. Like the fallen leaves On a windy day. But not the trees are mainly bare, as the circus crowd Gathers around to Catch the acrobat if they should Fall. Outside on the dirt path, is me. sitting in thought, Talking to more then myself. The trees, grass, and The earth listened to my many tricky questions. Why can't life be Like tonight. With all the vendors, music, and travelers. I tried to hide from the rising sun, instead my body made me absorb, every bit of light. The sun was the reminder, To return home and be in this other life. More free then the bird floating above me, I thought of people and the whole world. No money left in my money clip.  I found some water.  I saw the ring leader of the carnival and, She eagerly smiled "Life is what you make it." No help this was, as more and more contradictions Sprang from my mouth. Again she just smiled, so Pretty was her smile. Early that morning, I tried to talk to other beings, spirits, but no truth was found. Then like a lightning bolt hitting a tree, and causing fire everywhere, The answer hit me. On the ride home, I had The same pretty smile, as her.

The Carnival
I launched her with my small remaining band and, putting out to sea, we set the main on that lone ship and said farewell to land. Far to starboard rose the coast of Spain, astern was Sardi, Islas at our bow, and soon we saw Morocco port abeam. Though I and comrades now were old and slow, we hauled till nightfall for the narrow sound where Hercules had shown what not to do, by setting marks for men to stay behind. At dawn the starboard lookout made Seville, and at the straits stood Ceuta t'other hand. 'Brothers,' I shouted, 'who have had the will to come through danger, and have reached the west! our time awake is brief from now until the senses die, and so I say we test the sun's own motion and do not forego the worlds beyond, unknown and peopleless. Think of the roots from which you sprang, and show that you are human: not unconscious brutes but made to follow virtue and to know.'

Ulysses' Last Voyage
The melancholy days are come, the saddest of the year, Of wailing winds, and naked woods, and meadows brown and sear. Heaped in the hollows of the grove, the autumn leaves lie dead; They rustle to the eddying gust, and to the rabbit's tread. The robin and the wren are flown, and from the shrubs the jay, And from the wood-top calls the crow through all the gloomy day. Where are the flowers, the fair young flowers, that lately sprang and stood In brighter light, and softer airs, a beauteous sisterhood? Alas! they all are in their graves, the gentle race, of flowers Are lying in their lowly beds, with the fair and good of ours. The rain is falling where they lie, but the cold November rain Calls not from out the gloomy earth the lovely ones again. The wind-flower and the violet, they perished long ago, And the brier-rose and the orchis died amid the summer glow; But on the hill the golden-rod, and the aster in the wood, And the yellow sun-flower by the brook in autumn beauty stood, Till fell the frost from the clear cold heaven, as falls the plague on men, And the brightness of their smile was gone, from upland, glade, and glen.
