"sham" poems
The English vice, Some Etonian curse – Set down in grass And purple verse, Lavatory bred With ransacked blood, Skin slapping and With a falling thud – Takes boys at childhood, Wishes them away, With promises of popper fuelled buffets, And poisons them with Vice and virus red, And sees them unmarried Giving head. I don’t regret a single thing I am, I’ve tried it out And can’t abide the sham – I’ll **** men And make them beg for more, I’ll scrabble for their love upon the floor, I’ll love men And love will love me too, I’ll love for love’s own sake And when I’m through I’ll die and I’ll be thankful that your hate Never made me beg that I was straight.

Dal Lake I float on Dal Lake Suspended between the thick soupy crisp air of soldiers water lilies, Kashmiri bread and the Muslim prayers that penetrate the hardness of war chanting Allah Bismallah Floating Islam Holy words drenching the air Drenching the green cloth of Hindu soldiers Sliding down the cool metal of a rifle 9 years of war 1,000 houseboats lie empty in the Himalayan fog Intricately carved furniture Thick with dust and the powder of blood and bullets Himalayan silhouette etched black against the song of lotus gatherers Foggy voices like cloud of moon Lotus lake Gray of war and desperation Children beg 1 rupee 1 rupee 1 rupee Endless monologue Parched like lotus shaped paddle They throw flowers to me endlessly I throw them back endlessly Time passes slowly like smoke on a lizard’s tail trailing in the thick, rancid air of burning meat and maple leaves Like a shikara moving over the glass of Kashmir The sound of a dozen Bangees floating over the water Hollow, solemn and mournful Echoing against the hardness of the surrounding mountains The circle of Himalayas Like a womb around the prayers of Pachin In the middle of the lake I hear the call to prayer Azan Nemarz Suba Azan Nemarz Pashin Azan Nemarz Degar Azan Nemarz Sham Azan Nemarz Koftan From dawn till dusk Azan 4 mosques 4 singers 4 directions staggered by a breath like an imperfect echo Azan slips into the pockets of island soldiers Waters the impatience of soldiers on the shore Steals into the vacant eyes of soldiers in the Mosque They want to go home to their wives and children They want to leave the place of prayer, which is not theirs The place of prayer, which has seen death The place where God was pushed out In order to not see the killing To **** what they don’t see The place, which was no longer a refuge Outside Dal Lake turns to the color of red lentils cooking in a dented metal *** In the Shikara boat we eat dal and rice and throw scraps into the silver water where it washes up onto the ***** boots of a soldier I hear the dull gray click, click of his rifle as it touches the ground The prayers have ended

To live in Wales is to be conscious At dusk of the spilled blood That went into the making of the wild sky, Dyeing the immaculate rivers In all their courses. It is to be aware, Above the noisy tractor And hum of the machine Of strife in the strung woods, Vibrant with sped arrows. You cannot live in the present, At least not in Wales. There is the language for instance, The soft consonants Strange to the ear. There are cries in the dark at night As owls answer the moon, And thick ambush of shadows, Hushed at the fields' corners. There is no present in Wales, And no future; There is only the past, Brittle with relics, Wind-bitten towers and castles With sham ghosts; Mouldering quarries and mines; And an impotent people, Sick with inbreeding, Worrying the carcase of an old song. To live in Wales is to be conscious At dusk of the spilled blood That went into the making of the wild sky, Dyeing the immaculate rivers In all their courses. Really? Well, don’t be, because it doesn’t help to be sorry. Sorry doesn’t change it. Sorry doesn’t make it go away. Sorry doesn’t “undo” what’s already been done. Sorry doesn’t erase my memory. Sorry doesn’t take away the searing pain in my chest. Sorry ***** I don't want your pity or to hear that no child should ever have to endure what I did. Because **** happens. It happened to me …it happens to millions of other kids. Shoulda…woulda…coulda… You’re right – I do have so much going for me. I have an education, a career, financial security – the beautiful house w/the picket fence, the 2 kids and the dogs. And it’s all a huge sham! You can take the girl out of the trailer park, but you can’t take the trailer park out of the girl. And that’s what I’m to be commended for??? That doesn’t make me special. I should be commended because I have an education? Things could sure be a lot worse, huh? I could be a crack ***** living on the street with 10 kids in foster care, unable to afford therapy even if I wanted to go. I could be like “them”. Wow! I’m so awesome. Yay for me! Kudos to the smart chick that spent years being molested by her father and ACTUALLY made something of her life. It’s a miracle! It’s all such a sham – a dog and pony show. Smoke and Mirrors, my dear! Put on a stylish outfit, and paste on a cheerful smile, and everyone thinks you have it all together….. No one would ever know different. You wouldn’t have known. If I’d have kept my big fat mouth shut!!!!! I should have known better….I should have sat down and weighed the risks, possible opportunities, the roadblocks the problems, and definitely a cost analysis of plan A – trying to work through the ******** of the past, B – continue to live in denial, C – **** myself. …. That’s what a smart business woman would have done. And after all, I’m super smart, huh? A real genius!

ancient snakes (masquerade)
They call it BPD A illness that shapes me, Its the “I don’t fit in” disorder, The “Your the one who’s out of order.” Come to terms I now admit, How hard I felt each near hit. Always one with the conflict, feelings of A counterfeit. There turns A time of no cease, absence of light is unleashed, out of the blue from the inside, this empty form and crowded mind. A Diagnosis is in .. The cerebrums burnt, like third degree skin, Its now over sensitive to everything. The cause of the burns, Is internal fires, that incinerated mental wires. Did I change who I am, for A world i saw to be A sham, attempting to form A personality, Ill try them on to see what fits me. Not afraid to be on my own yet again, not all alone. To see the great in everyone until reminded that Im wrong. If everything is all black and white, Right or wrong, where do I look too belong, My solitary single handed fight, To search for release of this plight.

be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. -max

implosions are for starfish and our mission is clear. we have nowhere to be from and that's half the battle. we are seldom unbridled in the chastity of our carnal bluff... and our cages are breathing. we are finally designing our most daring Inertia. both mum on the details in the devil's flotsam. we jot some of the names of the nameless... on the outside of Dixie cups. like mint julep promise to a tangerine honest. again and again, we ache through the breeze of our soothing traumas. we court the verity of a sham. we blast through the congregation of our adversary, snipping varmints from a stale camp in the southernmost of our due south,; where they fear the bonfire until a vagrant maps the flaming tongues to a long kiss.... and we crash upon the shore of Never Asked. but regret This.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You pose and pout, Seduction by superficial sauciness. You tell me of your day With that simpering voice, Raising each last word Long and loud. You show me your flash cars, Your sumptuous wardrobe And who knows what else? You and your kin call yourselves “Influencers” – A great word, But all you do is make people: People who have grafted long and hard For a little spare cash, Go buy things they Do not really need. Right Said Fred was Right: The global catwalk Is a sham. I too would love to be an “Influencer”, Such a fine word, But I would be one to encourage folk To Love others, Stop all this Conflict Between polar opposites and extremes, Fight only for the Common Good, And make the world a better place For All. who am i? what am i? is my identity determined by my actions? so that makes me a girl who'd rather write than live and takes in life about as well as a siv but is that all i am? because that excludes the laughter the offkey singing the mediocre horn playing and my lack of praying or is the only me who matters the one who is seen through a million other eyeballs? she says i'm a talent, a bottomless pit a good friend, one you'd want a girl obsessed with times new roman font someone who's all the best parts of salty and sweet but tell me, if that's the truth then how come my phone isn't blowing up with calls? am i little else than the me in the mirror? two little tired chocolate truffles unruly dark hair skin that doesn't know what to be all contained underneath a makeup mask it's difficult to put a label on a person while also taking time to imagine them complexly to call me just one name ignores the best and the worst the person in love with language also uses it as a weapon to attack the girl with a chip on her shoulder never wants to look back inside of me is a multitude of ladies pretty preppy ladies singing show girls nifty nerd chicks to choose one and ignore the rest would be a sham so maybe i don't know who i am and maybe that's okay

Hello, my name is Reggae Reggie, and this is my confession. I am a Reggae mon. My life is Reggae. I love being a boombastic island boy, slouchin', couchin', and enjoyin' a splif of Reggae love. I spend most of my time in my home, listenin' to dank Reggae. Reggae always calmed my mind, until it told me to **** her. I never would've don it, but sometin' changed. Reggae Reggae told me she was a Reggae sham. Listenin' to screamo on the down low. That **** What a freak. Reggae I was mindin' my own business, lightin' that sweet, sweet Reggae ****** Next thing I know, my hands are around her neck. She begs for Reggae mercy. Reggae Next ting I know, I'm in my Reggae basement, blood pourin' all over me. From her lifeless Reggae body. The smell of a dank mornin' fills my house. I love it. Reggae I snap out of it. Realize what went down, downtown. It wasn't me. It was Reggae. Reggae Made Me Do It.

At Bookshop Santa Cruz I look at a book about the East Bay then and now One picture strikes me: 1969 Sproul Plaza Govener Ronald Reagan has the National Guard spray tear gas on protesters on the steps of this Berkeley Administration Building People run in black and white they look like my parents The helicopter is so close to the ground, like the Vietnam War I was three In the backseat of our VW Bug My mother was driving me to Strawberry Canyon for a swim Then she got scared--something on the radio We turned around I didn't understand She had to protect us from tear gas We lived in a war zone Everyone was very upset We were attacked by our own government Even children were fair game An innocent frog is placed in water If the water temperature is raised gradually the frog will sit there until it dies In 1980 Ronald Reagan became our President Much to our dismay "70% of pollution comes from trees" he had announced as Governer, he was obviously a man of science The vice grip clenched, the water temperature raised as we felt around us the world becoming more difficult as a middle class we were supposed to wait for crumbs to fall from the table of the rich folks fighting over the bits like starving animals Budgets were cut Prices rose, wages fell or disappeared completely We were at war 1985: I took a class in Economics in college, a UC I learned that Supply Side Economics was a silly idea written on a napkin at a fancy restaurant where the fat ones eat and the crumbs are thrown away It was all a sham An excuse The vice grip tightened, the world became more difficult not the American Dream my parents grew up in To be middle class was to struggle and struggle and still not have anything The frog began to die Somehow we saw that Reagan drifted away, but his ghost remained, a respite in the 90's Then we were at war again Not just tear gas, but carpet bombing Guerilla warfare in the streets of a hot arid country Oil companies, already saturating our ground and our air with their products Cashed in The frog is near death We struggle, and nothing gets better Only a respite At a fancy restaurant on a napkin someone wrote a new theory of Economics that became like Scientology Outgrew it's ridiculous inception And became real Ronald Reagan dropped tear gas from helicopters on Sproul Plaza and it drifted to Strawberry Canyon where children learned to swim But that is child's play now the frog is about to die I want to pull it out.

It is said that those who have emotionally touched you leave an everlasting imprint on your beating heart and shining soul An impression of sorts like one of a fingerprint, the swirling patterns of their delicate fingertips pressed against our skin leaving a permanent mark for everyone to see a tattoo of beauty or sometimes, a scar of spiteful hatred and sham The imprints left on our skin eventually travel to our hearts recreating our character and traveling to our souls, shaping us anew taking and reshaping our very beings to become a kind angel or a vengeful demon refining our once innocent minds to become something else Fingerprints pressed to our eyes, lips, hands and feet either leaving us with good impressions or wicked intentions It is not for us to decide whether those who touch us leave fingerprints of swirling beauties or a labyrinth of anguish but we can decide what we do with these unique tattoos and what we create using their magnificent power.
