"poorly" poems
I saw you in winter, and thought of tree branches feathered by starlight in poorly lit neighborhoods. A hearth where the more honest parts of myself, I am bared fetal, warmed upon, welcomed. I saw you in spring, and thought of long drives in the countryside in the rain. Ice cream melting from our chins dancing petrichor upon our toes, kissing by the sea shore. I saw you in summer, and thought of sleepy boathouses, uncovering ancient childhood treasures in the woods. A secret lake somewhere, the sky's reflection in promise. Windy hilltops upon which to blame each other for the sunrise. I saw you in autumn, and thought of scarfs and cafes, city streets and sunsets where we watched each others breath escape. Apartment staircases where windchill hibernates, the world slowing down around us from your window. The first time I saw You, I thought to myself, "I could live there."

I saw you in seasons...
The aftermath of poorly applied algebra is a scramble of numbers, letters, lonely coefficients, and an unemployed ninjas. These characters are much like those of a barbershop quartet, where members can either harmonize or simply fall flat. All of this depends on the song they sing and the order it is sung; algebra sings a song of SVSCOS (Same Variables Same Coefficients Opposite Sides) What else can come of bad math? Nothing less than a burning hatred for radicals, imaginary numbers, the saying 'PEMDAS', or maybe the fact that if you're 21 you must stay out the bars. This being said, Algebra 2 is very much like a dream; once you wake up, most of it is forgotten, but also in that it can be strived toward and reached.

Mixing tea, let's say lavender with something as simple as milk Must sound silly and weird at first glance, as both come with their own tastes and flavors which seem to not match at all. Even the most unmatching couple can find bliss, harmony and perfection in their very relationship, however. Such as for the tea; The milk manages to soften, embrace, advertise the taste of lavender while leaving a pleasant aftertaste which is alike a ghost poorly detectable, but present nonetheless after all. With some sugar to sweeten this experience, it becomes divine, something I would never have thought of, of such an odd couple. The image of the lavender becomes overdrawn by the milk, Engaging in a pure, creamy, brief white which reflects light just in a majestic sense. This is a taste to become lost in whilst reading a book in the best of lightings, together with someone who causes your heart to race and just turn ablaze ~ Umi

I look into this never-ending sun Left, right, right, left, the score climbing higher. Then, suddenly the sun ends its cold fun, and we look at our life it seems so dire. Days and weeks slaughtered by the LED. No love life, no friends, no freedom. Just a window, what the screen lets me see. I live in a poorly crafted kingdom. Look before you, at this husk of a man. He had such potential, he had a plan.

To the teachers who never really cared and ignored my problems; To my fellow ***** “misfits”, etc. Who will no doubt receive more abuse upon my passing, as my tormentors will no longer have me to push around; To those who never cared, never spoke, probably never knew my name; To the one true friend, whose caring was the only thing that prevented this event from happening sooner; To the God, if he does exist, who chose to play a cruel, cruel joke on me when he placed me where he did and surrounded me with so many uncaring faces; What about my teachers? Will they be sorry to see another student become a statistic? Certainly the administration and Principal will mourn, as my death will not reflect well on them as an institution. Well, I apologize for making the statistics for your administration worse. But I don’t expect an apology for the false sympathies of people. As for my fellow students, those who made a more significant impact on my life, I know better than to expect my tormentors to mourn. There’s another group I have not yet addressed: those not like me who left me alone. Or should I say ignored me. I appreciate you sparing me any further harassment, but your inaction, your withheld hellos and how are you’s  did more hurt than any name calling. Your inaction effectively excluded me from student life, from the human race. You left me isolated and alone, and no words I could say can convey to you the suffering you caused. I could name names, but in doing so, I would do more now for you than you ever did for me in life. I do not know what awaits me when I get down off this rope. Will there be a void? Or will I come face to face with God? I just don’t care anymore. If you’re anything like your people, I wouldn’t want to know you. You preached to love one another, yet I’ve felt everything except love from Christians. Even if I knew you were different, well, I'd still reject you. You have left your “followers” to treat people like me poorly. You have allowed so many of the people you “love”, including me, to suffer. So you want me to trust you with my life? I don’t want to spend eternity with a careless deity like you, or with the company you keep. I’m trying to watch TV but I don’t know what I’m watching. It’s so lonely here. I want to sleep but it just won’t come. I’m so tired of hurting and being alone. I hope that with my death, there'll be a wider awareness for child abuse and the effects it could have on a person. That's the only wish I have right now. A lot of people will be hurt with my passing, disappointed even, or maybe it won't matter. But I'd like to believe, no matter how much of a ****** up person I am, I died for a cause greater and bigger than myself. That's the only consolation that I have right now. So that’s it. That’s me. Leaving the world to be a better place. Goodbye - T © Copyright Tyler Atherton

It’s just easy for them Isn’t it? This couple on the train. They walked on laughing together Holding hands And I felt that familiar something- Not jealousy Not envy But... Chagrin. Astonishment. Incredulity. Incomprehension. Looking at them feels like looking at one of those Impossible pictures Where the stairs keep going forever in a loop. It’s just Easy for them. It doesn’t hurt anymore, that thought, But thinking it feels so odd in my mind When I can’t imagine loving someone without Shame, Without pain. They fit. These people, They fit without having to carve anything out. They fit without punishing each other. They fit like puzzle pieces cut from the same board- No worries, they just go together, and that Is that. They fit like “Of course.” Like breathing. Neatly. Simply. Carelessly. I can’t imagine what it’s like I can’t comprehend it- To fit Somewhere Much less to fit somewhere With someone. I am always trying to corset myself into this world, Lungs burning, Trying to remain small enough to squeeze by Catching myself by the wrist to keep from reaching For anything. And if there seems to be a spot where I might be able to exist as I am It is always Occupied. Like a shiny pinprick That thought hurts- Not like the others it is newly cut And still ****** The idea that maybe there is a home for me And that maybe I was too late for it. They’re laughing. He says something clever, Passes a hand along the small of her back And she leans into it, Smiling because she loves that he wants to touch her innocently. They seem to exist behind glass. Not for the first time I wonder If I could just slip into that life Like a drop into an ocean I want it badly I want it stupidly And I examine all the parts of myself, All the edges and cracks, All the things I’ve worked so hard to protect and repair. It is not a welcome sight- I am not a home I am like an old ruin Full of murmurings and cold spots Full of dusty sunlight. I sigh, Knowing the secret I keep so poorly- That if I really had a choice to be otherwise I would have already made it. I couldn’t reach them if I ran for a thousand years, They are too far away. They walk off the train, arms linked Talking about nothing And I watch them go Like a hallucination, Like a mirage in the desert. Her perfume smells like forgetfulness And it lingers.

My friends describe me as a man of few verbal words. Funnily, the words are chosen poorly for someone who thinks so much about what a person should and shouldn't say. Last year, a classmate told me she would get at least three words out of me before our study group quit for the night. I responded,”You lose”.

I walked into a church today, One I wanted to visit for days, I passed by it, saw the huge doors open Inviting me in daily, but I just didn’t go in. I’m a Hindu by religion, Indian by birth, I have an older sister, My mom and my dad obviously. Why am I telling you this? Well because I’m everything but Happy, calm and sorted, Just angry, irritated and anxious. They fight, my mom and dad, They love each other, or maybe they don’t, But they fight and argue, They don’t hold back on concern either. They talk a lot, my sister and him, The guy she’s seeing but not dating, The guy she’s serious about but hasn’t met, She’s always on the phone, sharing every bit of her life. I entered the church, Felt nothing, felt the same as usual, No excitement, disappointment, nothing, Temples don’t help either. I love my family, they love me back, They care and support me, a lot! I don’t want it most of the times, It both keeps me alive and suffocates me. They are always there, Standing right by me, If not in person, then by spirit, Always a call away. I talk to them every day, thrice, Twice at least, message my whereabouts, It’s a habit, a want, a need To let them know everything about me. They are fighting now, I got an email this time, Not a phone call, nor message, Mom lied, that she’s got her migraine. Dad’s left the family WhatsApp group, Blamed it on the work stress, But I know better, we all do, I may be the youngest, but I’m 20. My sister’s fed up with me, Well she’s not the only one, I shout, scream, screech rudely, Loudly, with no sane reason. I know I need help, We all do, for anger, To love and feel loved, But it’s never going to happen. I am a psychology student, I want to let the world know, With my research that depression and anxiety, Can’t be beat with medicines nor by expressing. My sister’s a Human Rights student, Who wants to help people, Support and care for them, You can’t, nothing will end human suffering. We are the sole cause of it, Human suffering, the ones with fuel, The ones with the extinguisher, Yet, each time we choose poorly. My family is broken, ******* up, It’s surviving on a thin string, But it won’t break, ever, We’ll all just drift apart.

to make a scene, even if you're not on stage... it really is your style. i applaud you. bravos! bravos! i thought i was the actor and you the director or more like the puppeteer and i would drag Myself, the puppet along and dance dance to your poorly written songs and recite your pathetic soliloquies amusing how you are trying so hard and all i can think is that this might be the interval and some lunatic got on stage wishing he could be part of all this. but i am really enjoying my ice cream, you know?

Chivalry is dead This I was taught at age eight While sitting at my poorly organized desk in the third grade Still believing cooties were being bred in the boys around me The death of chivalry was not hard to fathom Chivalry is dead When we were young Listening to the stories of old maids Recounting tales of bitter divorce In between addition problems Making sure no one saw us counting on our fingers Chivalry is dead We thought But what was it anyway?

ABC Poem (Medical Stuff )
Life’s moments and happenings are like little thieves They don’t want any money They still take it Putting salt on cracked lips, stealing the warmth of a heart Sobs resonate in lonely halls Everything reeks Of lifeless dust Even darkness can’t fight them off Or push away the pain The cold, swift figures taste like hatred Longtime friend with the soul of a sister Offers a consoling embrace It bleeds good feelings Now they want our money Thieves aren’t fair, nor logical No rhyme No reason Life’s a poorly written song Bad music ***** The bold melody clashes With its vague accompaniment We didn’t want them so we welcomed them ‘There must be some way out of here’ Said the joker to the thief I don’t think there is any way out The precious tokens of life should be protected By an army of mindlessly trained children Who fall in love with the thieves Whose forgiving minds omit the fear Thieves call us easy We are forever sobbing Cries heard only by past selves and invisible belongings When we prove we are great And pass impassable tests Everything will return We aren’t capable of such feats Our memories sing us haunting songs We cry out with our salty lips And empty hearts Robbed of any motivation Robbed of any care Robbed of love

let's face it
The pick All the stress that an orange has caused is painful. It is painful for the tree from which it came. Snatched away with promises of sweetness. A tree mostly green, engulfing Small speckles of that deceptive orange. It was such a bright colour – high hopes! Handpicked by a man only looking for the best, Choosing poorly not for the first time. The green leaves frantically try to reclaim what’s theirs. Branch after branch reaching out, trying to uproot him. Close, so close. But they are a sea apart, At least an apple has a core, a heart. The peel Now it is pilfered, the painful process begins, Never quite ending: disappointment beckons. To try and taste these orange juices You soldiers must bear the burden. Each soldier, a finger digging themselves Into the tough stressful shell. Fingernails stained with orange blood, Eyes blinded by the same tangy juices. It never slips off in one go Like a roomy balaclava, But crumbles like the remnants of a bombing. Brick by brick, orange by orange it crumbles. Now it is finally undone But neither tree nor man has won. The preparation The crust collapsed, but now It is time to untangle the web the mantle holds. First, a division – the separation of brothers Who served side by side at birth. Dissected by these soldiers Acting as a bomb squad, Searching for those hidden pips. Found, but not without casualties – Sticky fingers with no taps in sight. Once removed the web is untangled. Tired, he hopes that the stress will swiftly end Unaware that the sweetness was just pretend. The pain Finally the moment has arrived And illogical ceremonies commence. I fear the celebration is far too soon, For as white touches orange and tries So desperately to unite, The tartly taste slays the poor man’s buds: Igniting like petrol on his burning tongue. He wishes he could return that orange To the green tree to which it belongs, To return a bullet-sprayed windscreen is not an option. The orange, once bitten, enjoys its trance Latching on to those pained tingling taste buds. His orange, a disaster to undress: Bad taste – a foolish price for such a mess.

A pen is not a tool, it is an instrument, and it does not do for an instrument to be cheap or poorly made. If I have a choice, it will be expensive Ink, not gel. God forbid a ballpoint Bic. No. It will be the kind of pen that makes you want to write, even when you have no idea what it will be about; Write, not for the flow of thoughts to pen to paper, but for pen to hand to brain, the sensation of the tip smooth across white ****** paper swimming up your arm. Handwriting that is usual jerky and of questionable legibility morphing into a graceful scrawl I would have the kind of pen that rips the words out of me, if I had my choice. The pen a bow, the paper a cello. The notes pouring, spilling, becoming, composer unsure of where they come from but suspecting some deep, secret crevice inside them only touchable by the finest instrument that they can imagine. A pen like the head of an infant in your palm, so soft and inexplicably right that you want to hold forever, because it feels like it belongs in your hand; cradled plastic as pleasant as downy hair And with such a pen I will write and write, at the start hardly aware what these words will weave. A portrait of an artist, genius or insane? And the ideas will unravel until it becomes more than sensation, the meaning bigger than paper and pen. Finally, at last.

Gutter Statement
It was a rainy night. He took out his umbrella, opened it, and it soon engulfed the both of us. "Hey, you're getting wet," he said. He pulled me closer to him, his arms like the umbrella protecting me, protecting us from the drizzle. I snapped out of my daydream to find him weirdly staring at me, and asked him, "What, do I have something on my face?" "No, it's just... why are you staring into space?" Our footsteps made little splashes, puddles reflected a thousand images of us. These pictures from nature will not last for a lifetime but the rain was our witness, as if the skies were crying at a matrimonial ceremony. I took a step away from him to let the memory of him soak in me. He stands there in the rain innocently, with umbrella in hand, waiting for me to respond. Breathing out, I told him: "Ask me what I think of you right now." "Wait, what? Are we going to play a game?" That usual what-is-going-on look still stupidly plastered on his angelic face. "Well, what do you think of me right now, then?" I didn't hesitate and the first word that automatically left my lips were 'umbrella'. "Umbrella? Do I look that thin to you, really?" He said dryly as he gave me an uninspired look. He shook his head in disbelief and pouted. "And I thought you'd relate me at least to the rain." "Umbrella: definition for a protecting force or influence," I told him as I stood in place. I side-glanced at him to find a spark lighted up in his eyes as his shoulders loosened. "You're my umbrella because I need you in rainy days and sunny ones. Literally because of your stature to block the sun or cover me when it rains," I laughed. "And it's not because you're thin like one, silly. But how you comfortingly stretch out your arms to me when it's a bad day for me. How you guard me from others' icy remarks. It feels like a need to have you around wherever I go." He cleared his throat jokingly and added, "Might I say I also take you high like Mary Poppins' umbrella." He burst out laughing as I glared at him for his poorly done innuendo. But right there and then as I rolled my eyes at him, he dropped the umbrella, grabbed me by my waist and kissed me as light as the raindrops kissing our skin. He broke off after a while and said, "Getting wet, are we?" Before I could claw at him for his second pun, he released me as I chased him down, not caring if I would get a fever later. But sometimes I just wonder how did I come to like, fall in love, and love him-- basically feel every emotion with him. In all truth, he wasn't just my umbrella, but also my home whom I'll always return to at the end of all my days. Umbrella or home, he is my shelter.

Practicality is the reality of ignominious totality the devices of all sizes and the grammatical mentality of systematic duality.
