In the cold grey light of the sixth of June, in the year of forty-four, The Empire Larch sailed out from Poole to join with thousands more. The largest fleet the world had seen, we sailed in close array, And we set our course for Normandy at the dawning of the day. There was not one man in all our crew but knew what lay in store, For we had waited for that day through five long years of war. We knew that many would not return, yet all our hearts were true, For we were bound for Normandy, where we had a job to do. Now the Empire Larch was a deep-sea tug with a crew of thirty-three, And I was just the galley-boy on my first trip to sea. I little thought when I left home of the dreadful sights I'd see, But I came to manhood on the day that I first saw Normandy. At the Beach of Gold off Arromanches, 'neath the rockets' deadly glare, We towed our blockships into place and we built a harbour there. 'Mid shot and shell we built it well, as history does agree, While brave men died in the swirling tide on the shores of Normandy. Like the Rodney and the Nelson, there were ships of great renown, But rescue tugs all did their share as many a ship went down. We ran our pontoons to the shore within the Mulberry's lee, And we made safe berth for the tanks and guns that would set all Europe free. For every hero's name that's known, a thousand died as well. On stakes and wire their bodies hung, rocked in the ocean swell; And many a mother wept that day for the sons they loved so well, Men who cracked a joke and cadged a smoke as they stormed the gates of hell. As the years pass by, I can still recall the men I saw that day Who died upon that blood-soaked sand where now sweet children play; And those of you who were unborn, who've lived in liberty, Remember those who made it so on the shores of Normandy. ________________________________________

Shores of Normandy by Jim Radford

It all started with mixing Tequila and Sambuca last Friday night. Then I noticed him, busting some classic moves on the dance floor. Soon we are dancing, grinding, kissing, laughing, dancing, kissing, he's even drinking out of my half finished cup of water, he's smiling. "I'm a Royal Marine, not an Army boy!" he corrects. "A Commando." We both even have the same phone! Coincidence? I don't think so. Beads of sweat dripping from his hair onto his flawless face and neck, yet, he smells oh so divine, "it's Gucci Guilty Intense", he explains. I blurt out, "Hope this won't be a waste of your time, 'cause I'm not going to sleep with you tonight!" He says, "All right", and smiles. Mixed signals, cold bed phobia, pure drunkenness combined, I offer him, "It's late. You can spend the night at mine, I don't mind." "Just Scott, you won't remember the rest, it's long and complicated", later he adds, "Good luck trying to find me without my name!" "I'm Twenty One." "That's so young", I exclaim and he frowns. He's cocky yet witty, and also very pretty, so I let my dignity drown. Taking him in my mouth until he explodes like a loaded gun, my duty to the nation's hunkiest hero was well and truly done. "I joined two days after my eighteenth birthday", said he with pride. "My vacation's over. I'm leaving on Sunday to Poole". I sighed. I spent the entire night insomniac, with my head throbbing to the beat of his obliviously, peacefuly sleeping exhaling and inhaling speed. Close enough to feel the heat of his body, yet a million miles away, him dreaming and I reminiscing, both awaiting the dawn of a new day. Skipping the "thank you", "goodbye", hug or phone number, he says, "See you around maybe", holding a rather deceitfully seductive gaze. "Scott, we're never going to see each other again", I answer bluntly. Mirroring my sad smile in reply, minus the sadness, he left promptly.

There was a Young Lady of Poole, Whose soup was excessively cool; So she put it to boil By the aid of some oil, That ingenious Young Lady of Poole.

Winter is upon us cold and grim Evenings longer night comes early. Mornings cold ground white with snow Forest trees standing bare all alone. Geese flying south squirrels hide in nests Wishing the sun back next. ~Jonathan Poole ⚘

Winter
A capricious capricorn born to daughter of joseph aloisious and mariellen A wild haired blonde named dawn Who had her at age six and ten She had a brother named Ryan before her life began Her father a man twice her mothers age Not a wise man, nor a sage. Her grandmother remarried to son of harry poole. A man named Keith not a genius nor a fool. Unlike estranged joe, he kept his cool. Mother remarried to a man who did not. Though her father said he missed her, he never bothered to call. Soon she had a new sister and felt like nothing at all. Some years later the step father would leave, finally she felt she could breathe. Her mom relieved she began to see another man. A man named mark she soon had a child. A bright eyed boy named dennis, with a sweet smile. The girl would run away in search of happiness wishing for more. Her heart was free, and her dreams alive. She returned to the place that she once escaped, to make the mistakes she once made. Like a blade of grass in tussle with the wind. She felt defeated, and waited for her life to begin. She waited for the day when she would leave on a whim.

The family and me
The Chief of the General Staff awoke To the ring of the telephone, He’d tried to ****** a couple of hours At his Hunting Lodge, in Scone, But the red phone was insistent, it Would ring ‘til he picked it up, ‘For God’s sake Carter, what’s it now?’ The answer was abrupt. ‘The Early Warning’s gone to red, They need you down at Staff! Hang on, I’m going to patch you through We’re not sure if it’s naff. It didn’t go through to orange as It usually does at first, But we can’t afford to take a chance…’ The General’s lips were pursed. ‘Scramble the FA-18’s Are the carriers out, d’you know?’ ‘There’s two in the Med and one caught dead In the dock at Scapa Flow! The Seventh Army’s at Aldershot And the Fifth’s in the Middle East.’ ‘Well, whether the troops are out or not It’s Martial Law, at least.’ The Action Room in the basement of A secret place in Poole, Had interrupted a war game with The Army Training School. The radar screens were alight with scenes Beamed in from the new AWAC’s, With missiles coming from everywhere ‘We need to be hitting back!’ The submarines were alerted to Prepare their missile racks, The silo’s over in Kansas armed And ready to attack, Then suddenly in the Action Room The radar screens were clear, There wasn’t a single sign or trace Of a missile coming near. And down in a London Nursing Home They were leading him away, A nice old fellow with Parkinson’s With a half-full breakfast tray, They snapped the lid of his laptop Told him, ‘George, you’re going to be canned!’ He said, ‘I just got the hang of it, That game called ‘The High Command!’’ David Lewis Paget

I was shooting spitballs at the stars in my eyes, difficult to do, but anyway it's a Saturday and who was to know. Not the beggar who sat with his hands wrought in iron. I have my eye on him, he sits there quite prim like an old English gent, but I sense the pent up frustration the doggedness of situation, if anyone has an algorithm for that, tell him, he's sat by the stairs on the Jubilee crown which was placed by the Monarch on her way down to the palace, a place he'll never see. 'Coppers for me, coppers for tea' I just shoot spitballs, I'm getting quite good, but it won't pay the rent, if only it could.
