"lightnin" poems
Lighnin' is just a big ol' lighter.
Strikin' down like a boombastic fighter.
One day lightnin' strike to me front.
Just far enough to light me blunt.
Most people say me was lucky dat day.
However, I was not. Me blunt blew away.

Me be 'avin a good time enjoyin' me boombastic trailer park home.
Den a tornado of Reggae come rollin' down da road.
Reggae Kids with a Reggae attitude.
Hooligans with a passion. My passion.
Reggae
Da flurry of rastafarianism be tearin' up the houses.
Destroyin' mailboxes as dey 'proach me home.
Den, like lightnin' they be in front of me.
We like you, Reggae Reggie
They say
But we be as poor as a washed up Island Boy
I fear for my safety
So we gonna have to rob you
Me pull out a gun n shoot the kids.
Fuck'n chumps tink dey can rob me.
No way Jose.
**** You, bad boys*
Life went on.

*Most of the time
He's the lord of the jungle
Everyone grins while he gripes
Usually he's found just
Lounging around in his stripes
His tiger lady's
A superfine feline
Just what his highness deserves
A sweet purring pussycat
Proud of her pussycat curves
He's a tiger in the rain
It's the thunder and lightnin'
He can't explain
A tiger in the rain
Who's frightened
Caught in the storm he came
Searching for shelter
Right up to me and my spouse
We both stroked his chin and
Invited him into the house
He's a tiger in the rain
It's the thunder and lightnin'
He can't explain
A tiger in the rain
Who's frightened
He's a tiger in the rain
It's the thunder and lightnin'
He can't explain
A tiger in the rain
Who's frightened*

(Song title from Lightnin’ Hopkins’ catalogue, by Whittaker)
He stalks the parks; staring; leering,
Smiling contented,
Hiding behind his façade of walking his dog,
He reveals his true darkness,
As around the roundabout he ambles and strolls,
Looking at the children in their innocent poses,
We crouches by a boy alone in the shadows,
A boy who is happy to sit down and doodle,
He tells this stalker “let me play with your poodle”,
The menace moves in.

I can’t even think to myself anymore, without you comin’ right to my mind.
I’ve gone past the brink, into Hell – shut the door, an’ I’m wonderin’ never to find:
That ignorant bliss that I once so adored, when your sweet face had never been shown.
That brilliant abyss of my world without war an’ my ease with the ebb of its flow.
My pilot is burnin' but I am upturned now, I’m pushin’ the pressure I pull.
My stallin’ an’ swirlin’s a sight for the girl that I’m only at leisure to love.
It’s gotten to grindin’ an’ strikin’ like lightnin’, my heart is as happy as hurt.
I’m often invitin’, enticin’ a likin’, but we’re always back wastin’ words.
But like a bad dream that becomes as you seen it, I’m all but there breathin’ the air.
It’s such a long scene an’ it’s runnin’ on me an’ I’m fallin’ here rattlin’ my worth.
She’s all nature to me, the one shape of beauty, a harp an’ its pillows of string.
The everythin’ through me, her face in the room as an angel that carries a sting.
Lost in the eyes that I ache to revise, I find peace with the play of the light.
Tossed into tides about feelin’ alive, an’ of stealin’ her into the night.
But I’m at a loss, I’m at every mans end, growin’ older than anythin’ can.
She’s all that I’ve got, an’ I have to pretend that she just isn’t holdin’ his hand.

There’s never been a man like Grandpa Hayes
‘Cause all the tales about him must be true:
Broke sixteen horses less’n seven days
And stole the Rancher’s girl in only two.
He lived for eighty years ‘cause he was skilled,
An expert shot who never came out worse.
His .32 was from a man he killed
The only one who’d ever shot him first.
A family curse what made him ride so fast
‘Cause lightnin struck his daddy graveyard dead
They say it turned his uncle into ash
And then it got his cousin in the head.
So Grandpa spent his life outrunnin clouds
Just lookin for a truth he never found.

I'm quick like lightnin'
a flash and I'm gone,
movin' faster than
thunder
I'm always movin'
before the light can
illuminate the darkened
sky
Just once
I want to move with
the speed of sound
creating natural dance
beats
The whole earth grooves
to the rumblin' of the sky
shakin' its groove thing
to the rhythm of
life

As others feel an ebb and flow, a swayin’ with the breeze,
I find I fight to sail an’ row in high an’ swellin’ seas,
The lightnin’ fawks tear through the skies, an’ thunder clouds roll black,
The waves claw up to claim my life, an’ rain devoirs my raft.
I’m thrown around the dark abyss, no light to help me home,
I’ll not be found, I’ll not be missed. I spent my life alone.
As others struggle in the rain, but always find the sun,
I find for me there’s only pain – a pain I can’t outrun.
My futile cries meet wailing winds, an’ vanish in a beat,
I near capsize, I near give in – I’m famished an’ I’m weak.
Soon sounds of turmoil dull an’ wane, the hour has arrived,
The poundin’, tearin’ tides have faded. Silence falls around.
An’ peace befalls the thunderous scene – first peace since I was born,
An’ sleep besets the core of me. At last I leave The Storm.

the world wasn't always so cold & black
won't you let me take you back
to a time where lightnin' bugs lit up the skies
and we'd play in the creek & make mud pies
baseball in back yards, homeruns past the fence
back in the day where life made more sense
and the biggest worry was your mama getting mad
you didn't know what it was like to really be sad
we'd make a bed, right there in the grass
didn't know the world was made of glass
back then things were so sure
and we were all so pure
so beautifully untainted
oh the life we had painted
we'd play without worry, without fear
laugh so loud the whole world could hear
find the joy in such simple things
playground tag, racing to the swings
and it was impossible for us to hush
always moving, always in a rush
too ready to just grow up
time couldn't pass fast enough
so now i tell my children to take it slow
because they still have a long way to go
but that time will pass before we know it
sometimes you can't go back but you can remember

Woman oh woman
The rumor’s going ‘round
That I’m being treated
Like a circus clown
Cuz you been speading your good stuff
All over town
Woman oh woman
What am I supposed to do
Despite the rumors
I’m still in love with you
Should I go Lightnin Hopkins
And get a shot gun too
Or merely tell you baby
That ain’t no way for you to do
Woman oh woman
Do you dare deny
Then tell me to my face
Such a barefaced lie
All I want is an answer
To that time-worn question why
Woman oh woman
What am I supposed to do
Despite the rumors
I’m still in love with you
Should I go Lightnin Hopkins
And get a shot gun too
Or merely tell you baby
That ain’t no way for you to do

I'd like to take a moment now,
to tell you about my girl;
She's really one of very few,
that's ever walked this world!
She's lightnin' bolt that's struck on land,
true fighter when she's mad;
Yet moment that her smile breaks through,
best love one man could have!
She's drops of rain sent from the sky,
to quench the summers heat;
The puzzle piece I'd thought I lost,
to make my life complete!
She's springtime breeze at winter's end,
a splashing wave on shore;
The brightest star to shine at night,
no soul could love me more!
She's dogwood trees and buttercups,
the sun at showers end;
The bird that sings a pretty tune,
true beauty out and in!
She's all of this and so much more,
she's everything to me;
If ever once you doubt these words...
look through my eyes, you'll see!

****** happy, sad, ugly, pretty
Dats wat d everyday brings
Till yu showed face goldie
Happy and pretty d only tune dat rings
Tho faced with them withered trees
Fearing and hopin dey blossom again
But dear goldie be setting my soul free
Soul?... Yes.. Sweet yess.. Less loss more gain
Even when loosing, goldie make you feel ure wining
All this i knw, wld jst have a sit
Clouds of thoughts, do i stay still waiting
Staring and rolling in d beauty of you it.
Or do i shake off dose feathers
Nd embrace d real truth.. Reality.
Left for Zeus to decide, lightnin and thunders.
Puzzle, labyrinth, crazy tunnel.. Captivity
Cant leave goldie, cant leave reality
Make goldie my lover,Den pursue reality together,?
Already have a lover.. Complexity, captivity
Dear oceans, ur waves nd sprinkles, nw or never....
No... You are my want nt my need
But wnt let go
Lets draw d curtains... Diamond nd bead
They need not to knw
D creator he knows all.. We leave it to him
But stay with me goldie.. We wld overcome this
My happines, my smiles , my beauty beem
Lets ride on, i Victoria, with its thorn nd kiss..
