Route 84 would not lend me the light of a star last night Radio blazing at 75 mph nonsense noise to chew gum by Crackling political commentary Static of distance and thick clouds Invisible mountains blocking Memories seeping through the cracks coating the music in a film I rub my eyes watch myself punch alert buttons But it’s the angels’ jukebox tonight Roll down the window Watch the heat escape Summer again I am building a castle of ancient stones pulverized by relentless tides Dragged across maps by mastodons and mammoth glaciers The scouring hiss the ocean sighs Time has lulled these smoothly rolling them in the softest hands of sand and gels of life’s comings and goings tenderly tumbling in the millionth moonrise— Time deposits them here wet and glistening For the girl with the plaid two-piece to gather Shoulders sun-burnt barely say one week only, one week of the fifty two “It’s the time of the season…” and daddies on the beach are watching…. She has chosen yet another stone And the castle continues— in oblivion to all but her legend…      The queen will be safe here      from the rabble      The disgraced Tristan will surely seek her      Among these lofty cliffs      Between the raging circuit of the tide      Here winds forbid the vengeful mob      Here lovers learn      the debt of love’s bad timing      “Drink ye all of it!”      --the potion that assigns our sorrow….      She will not sleep—      while I chew this gum--  GUM? Roll down the window! Angels escape with the heat Waking me with the brush of their wings As that eighteen-wheeler hugs my flank And leans on the horn Lights flashing Rude rumbling under right tires Tantrum of snow In the draft of mass and velocity …and the angels? They’ve chosen another good one! They must’ve liked the 80’s Their wings slapping the windshield madly   Their hands steady the wheel

Benign, benevolent ballerina bubbly bathing by beautiful blossoming balsams. A gander I took and I was a statue, still, allured, and enchanted. my lips basted by beauty, before her I was an apparition, lost in forests of adulation. A vanishing spirit soon to be a vestige of a vestige. I shall wage wars, arm myself and battle my way to her hands that can melt the glaciers residing in my heart.

MY HEART IS HERS
Lay your sleeping head, my love, Human on my faithless arm; Time and fevers burn away Individual beauty from Thoughtful children, and the grave Proves the child ephemeral: But in my arms till break of day Let the living creature lie, Mortal, guilty, but to me The entirely beautiful. Soul and body have no bounds: To lovers as they lie upon Her tolerant enchanted slope In their ordinary swoon, Grave the vision Venus sends Of supernatural sympathy, Universal love and hope; While an abstract insight wakes Among the glaciers and the rocks The hermit's sensual ecstasy. Certainty, fidelity On the stroke of midnight pass Like vibrations of a bell, And fashionable madmen raise Their pedantic boring cry: Every farthing of the cost, All the dreadful cards foretell, Shall be paid, but not from this night Not a whisper, not a thought, Not a kiss nor look be lost. Beauty, midnight, vision dies: Let the winds of dawn that blow Softly round your dreaming head Such a day of sweetness show Eye and knocking heart may bless. Find the mortal world enough; Noons of dryness see you fed By the involuntary powers, Nights of insult let you pass Watched by every human love.

Lay Your Sleeping Head, My Love
*she slides her slender white fingers down the branches of his spine her eyes melted like glaciers and lips as soft as freshly fallen snow skin lustful, but heart unforgiving, exhaling his every intention she is autumn in his palms, her trees bare, the leaves rust fallen flashing indifference, thoughts plucked in shades of violent rose*

His blue eyes are like glacial-lakes, wrapping around his heart till he's chilled to the bone from the cold. A deadly place where treading is no longer permitted. His eyes are transparent and distant as the impersonal clouds passing overhead. Even as I stands before him, reflecting off him. I am still merely a reflection. He knows my face, I reason silently. From the hills of my cheeks, down towards the valley separating my lips. He should recognize it all. Instead a blank expression greets me.     A look of cold, solid insouciance. I'm immediately angry with myself for wanting to justify his indifference's. A reflex I've never been able to expel. The vestigial limb on a skeleton. A party favor from another time forgotten for the newly discovered toy. I twist in the fridged winds wrapping around him. My force giving under the great pressure magnified by his powers. I never wanted to dance upon his breeze. This realization makes me burn hotter. My anger brighter than the northern star. I welcome it, my amounting rage. I embraces it with a raging smile. His glaciers may be cold, immovable at times. A pretentious notion I might freeze. For I am the sun swirling in nova's ring and cannot be affected by his black iced personality.

Black Iced Personality.
Cobalt. Gunmetal. Pastel. Powder. Forget-me-not. Out of all the blues, She has the eye color with no name The eye color that is slowly driving me insane. Who gave her the right? To have something so beautiful I see blue everywhere; In paintings, photographs—even the air There are no crayons that can capture it Not even color codes on computers can match her eyes Her eyes are the space between the rippling depths of the ocean and the shards of reflected sky They are the eyes that squint a bit as she smirks because she thinks she's sly No matter how much I glance to the left during lunch The color escapes my mind and simply becomes a concept In my thoughts frustration likes to roam If it weren't for the non-existent green, her eyes would look like sea foam But here is no green— Only hundred year old glaciers, rivers, and stormy skies I don't even know what blue is anymore As angering as they are, her eyes are still something I adore I'm tempted to just ask her what color they are, But that would mean that I don't pay attention To do so would be like mistaking a stranger for your dad Everyone will become apprehensive and think that I have gone mad Her placid gaze tends to bore through my shell I feel vulnerable— like she can see my dilapidated soul But I know that she means no harm; She is amiable and full of charm Who knew blue could mean so much And still be convoluted? Blue washes the shore with the push and pull of the tides Blue has managed to stain my thoughts and dye my insides

Blue is cool. Soft blue waves, Caressing the sand Saying it's going to be okay -- Calming blue -- Still water Slight ripples, Causing the water to live Blue is not heated. Ice cold glaciers, Hard as rock Slowly melting -- Hard blue -- Changing ice Softening heart, Making the calm blue Blue is understanding, forgiving, and slowing down.

Plea
I met a shell of a mountain who knew she was finished claimed she grew up from a grain of sand with every year wider she bloomed a little bit longer to the roof of the sky with outstretched hands she made friends with the sun, shared enemies with no one counted weeks like she should of counted days and swallowed handfuls of night so she could sleep tight and turn her thoughts from its stone cold ways and this was the beginning, the start of the ending you can't die from a broken heart but from the time the sun rose to the space where it fell away she would love, and it wouldn't take part and every every day she would echo echo in every single way she should let go let go but it had her in its sights cupids icy arrows so she caught every one with her heart like it was her duty it walked the wrong wrong way down her one way plan she was surrounded by forests, rivers and beauty until that glacier froze over the land and so she blamed herself hated her wealth she was born at too young of an age and every night her dreams were touched by witches fingers until her heart was caged. with every morning spent not caring if she cares or not sleeping in the melt and mud, waiting for the earth to rot burying herself alive she scrapes the hole that it left open empty as her very heart, that mountain was all broken all broken, that mountain was all broken now I can see that her bloods red and she’s got feelings and they always get spilled both without thinking

FALLING IN LOVE WITH GLACIERS (morla tortoise shell mountain)
My body burns to rove far from man-made buildings, prisons for the modern soul. I need to traverse the frontiers white man stole from those who made it their home. I've been down to the Everglades of Florida. Fan boats flew through the estuary lines with roots of mangroves. I've been to the Hoh Rain Forest of Washington where fog descended on the shoreline and married the sulfur smell rising from hot springs. I must experience America's coast to coast beauty. Every spare seconds I spend luxuriating in the sun, thinking of all the places untouched. My list of desires grows as the glaciers of Glacier recede in Montana, beckoning me to the Rocky Mountain Peaks. Old Faithful gushes, surrounded by wolves and grizzlies. Someday I'll cross Yellowstone's expansive mountain ranges. from Idaho to Montana to Wyoming. On the arches of Utah I'll face my fear of heights and find solace at the tops of time-layered sandstone towers. Descending the Grand Canyon I'll study beautiful colors exposed by years of erosion. In winter Death Valley will be braved. The lowest and direst point will exhilarate me with scaled creatures as sand dunes whisper my name with every hot breath. The Badlands of South Dakota will hope I come backpacking through prairies to watch precious bison roam. California Redwood trees and I will stand side by side as friends. Yosemite will call me to her cliffs and I will chase waterfalls and sequoia groves until I've seen it all. I ache to explore the terrain that bears my name, the country I call home.

A thundering whisper
Life clings on In deserts, ice sheets and hot acid pools. Those selfish genes persist: Batons in a Marathon relay race. Generation follows generation. Clone adds to clone. So life spreads: The mightiest empire, Covering all the globe. A world full of living wonders. All manner of plants, insects and animals. Oceans teeming with fish. From tropical paradise To awesome glaciers. We must be mindful Of this glorious beauty. Mother Nature reigns supreme. Sing and rejoice, Party hard And put aside The awful truth - That in the end Everyone dies. Paul Butters © PB 26\7\2018.

Everyone Dies
Across mountain peaks like the spikes of your hair my fingers brush, careening off glaciers and sliding down hidden slopes. Curved and crossed as the bones in your spine, smooth and strong like the gliding wings of a hawk. The tawny-colored feathers echoed in each iris. A look, haunting. Chills and weightlessness invade my body curled next to yours in perfect sync to your heartbeat. Where waterfalls overflow our emotions capsizing our lonely individual vessels amid galaxies colliding each other on a spiraling journey of passion. The heat. Bronzer than the sun in Summer. My love. My moon and my stars. My one and only. Just two out-there planets together forever. Undiscovered, untarnished, undefiled by humanity. A secret whisper from the nebulas… *I    love             you….*

Because I could not draft for Ice, it did kindly draft for me. Does the Ice make you shiver? does it? Pay attention to the chill, the chill is the most shivering fear of all. Down, down, down into the darkness of the chill, Gently it goes - the chill, the trembling, the unsteady. A thawing, however hard it tries, Will always be Melting. Does the thawing make you shiver? does it? The big winter sings like a Sun is directly above the Tropic of Capricorn Now cosmic is just the thing, To get me wondering if the winter is mature. wooly glaciers sings like Iceburgs "Rushing water", said the glaciers, And "rushing water" then "rushing water" again. How happy is the frozen popsicle! Does the popsicle make you shiver? does it? The freezing that's really crystals, Above all others is the frost. Does the frost make you shiver? does it? Because I could not draft for Ice, it did kindly draft for me. Does the Ice make you shiver? does it? Because I could not draft for Ice, it did kindly draft for me. Ice, Ice, every where, Yet not a drop to draft. How happy is the cold surface! Down, down, down into the darkness of the surface, Gently it goes - the perfect, the gelid, the stone-cold. Pay attention to the floe, the floe is the most Dence ice mass of all. Floe, floe, every where, Yet not a drop to drift. The thawing is like a gentle voice, it tends to cause significantly. Does the thawing make you shiver? does it? The athletic game that's really zany, Above all others is the hockey. Pause to assist, like the hockey does. It does assist, it does draft, Should it also induct? Why would you think the snowfall is gradual? the snowfall is the most sudden downfall of all. Pause to last, like the snowfall does. It does last, it does accumulate, Should it also range? I saw the the antarctic installation of my generation destroyed, How I mourned the water. I don't like the fact that it, learned to reside before it knew how to flow. You can reside, you can flow, but can you supply? Because I could not draft for Ice, it did kindly draft for me. Does the Ice make you shiver? does it? Because I could not draft for Ice, it did kindly draft for me. Pause to draft, like the Ice does. Don't belive that the snowfall is small? the snowfall is big beyond belief. Never forget the braggy and large-scale snowfall. Pay attention to the cold, the cold is the most wintry respiratory disease of all. Are you upset by how springlike it is? Does it tear you apart to see the cold so frozen? I saw the the little demoralize of my generation destroyed, How I mourned the chill. Now small-scale is just the thing, To get me wondering if the chill is trivial. An iceman, however hard it tries, Will always be cunning. Are you upset by how adroit it is? Does it tear you apart to see the iceman so attractive? I saw the the Frozen excretion of my generation destroyed, How I mourned the water. Never forget the sleety and unchangeable water. Pay attention to the freeze, the freeze is the most Frozen fractals act of all. Does the freeze make you shiver? does it? Because I could not draft for Ice, they did kindly draft for me. Do Ice make you shiver? do they?

Juliet, your Juliet. I grew out of her. She was all dreamy, and fabled. She was brave enough to love you. She was brave enough to be crumpled to shreds yet fake a smile flawlessly. She grew on you. Juliet, your Juliet. I grew out of her. She was graceful and too kind to be true. She was the daisy of your garden, where flowers weren't just a few. She loved sunshine as much as the misty moon. She was ravishingly rhythmic. Forming melodies out of those midnight stars, adding beats and verses to your mundane mornings. Your Juliet, your Daisy, your sanguine Sestina all of them. Yet, nothing better than a reverie. Juliet, your Juliet. I grew out of her. She was all chirpy and consoling. Solace was what made her. Her love was fire, worth burning for. At times, her eyes form glaciers, arctic and numb. At times, she feels worn out and ready to drop. But, Juliet's audacious to hold on tight yet, taken down by you. Remember, she grew on you. Juliet, your Juliet. I grew out of her. She was delicate but humorous. Compassion knit her soul together. You tell her, she is all you ever wanted and is grateful for. But, the woman lying next to you hears the same. She was a writer and left you one. Juliet, your Juliet. Not anymore.

we all have sorrows as deep as wells, but i'm tossing them right out the door. maybe this is where i shed my old skin like a cobra, but i'm hardly as vicious. i'm only as dangerous as you let me be, with my bones as strong as glaciers and my eyes could swim inside aquariums or the Mediterranean sea, like i have gills that could let me breathe. i could make a home, 20,000 leagues under or i could touch land with my sun shining shades of affections with the complexions of new worlds. and did you know, that there are more stars in our galaxies than there are particles of sand on each coastal line - i guess you can say we learn something valuable when you least expect, like how cats have one hundred vocal sounds and we can relate because our vocal sounds are endless. we can use our voices. kind of like our opportunities, expanding like water turning to ice on our puddles so we can walk on them without rain boots or umbrellas that catch our tears. instead, we wear our thickness overlapping our feelings and i just want to be naked. if that leaves me vulnerable, so be it as long as i can taste the glass half full on my skin. i just want to be happy.

Today we all gather to listen to the merits(?) of mining the Iron Range Not for iron, but for copper and nickel and other precious metals. Are these metals more precious than clean water? Are these metals more precious than our pristine wilderness? Are these metals a legacy of what is to become of our planet Earth? We have taken the oil and turned it into plastic that cannot be broken down and turned back into nature. We have burned the coal to perpetuate our desire for more and more comfort via air conditioning and heat. We have polluted our atmosphere, melted our icebergs and glaciers Destroyed our coral reefs And now we want to risk the pure waters of our northern wilderness Reaching out to Lake Superior, Hudson Bay, the Mighty Mississippi And our entire planet. Why not keep a tiny part of our planet clean so that our children can say- Look, this is what we once had, this was Eden in our parents' time.

Sulfide Mining, Copper-Nickel Mining
A sign we are, without meaning Without pain we are and have nearly Lost our language in foreign lands, For when the heavens quarrel Over humans and moons proceed In force, the sea Speaks out and rivers must find Their way. But there is One, Without doubt, who Can change this any day. He needs No law. The rustle of leaf and then the sway of oaks Besides glaciers. Not everything Is in the power of the gods. Mortals would sooner Reach toward the abyss. With them The echo turns. Though the time Be long, truth Will come to pass. But what we love? We see sunshine On the floor and motes of dust And the shadows of our native woods and smoke Blooms from rooftops, at peace beside Turrets' ancient crowns; for the signs Of day are good if a god has scarred The soul in response. Snow like lilies of the valley, Signifying a site Of nobility, half gleams With the green of the Alpine meadow Where, talking of a wayside cross Commemorating the dead, A traveler climbs in a rage, Sharing distant premonitions with The other, but what is this? By the figtree My Achilles died And Ajax lies By the grottoes of the sea, By streams, with Scamandros as neighbor. In the persisting tradition of Salamis, Great Ajax died Of the roar in his temples And on foreign soil, unlike Patroclos, dead in king's armor. And many Others also died. On Kithairon Lay Eleutherai, city of Mnemosyne. And when God cast off his cloak, the darkness came to cut Her lock of hair. For the gods grow Indignant if a man Not gather himself to save His soul, yet he has no choice; like- Wise, mourning is in error. Friedrich Holderlin translated by Richard Sieburth

Damaged trust and marriage schemes Held hostage in each others' dreams Pinned to walls but flailing still Forgotten values, failing wills True love waits, we tell ourselves True love gladly stacks the shelves True love sets conditions and True love does the dishes and Slowly, slowly, we forget Just why we're here and who we met Another notch in wrinkled frowns Where I keep getting lost and found In roller-coaster ups and downs I'm lost and lost and lost and found Missing flights and toxic tongues Catharsis found in tar-filled lungs I lost myself in who I wasn't And in what true love does and doesn't Not quite gaslit, not quite safe Playing back the ancient tape We envy death for constancy- Besmirching our own consciences We forgo our emoluments Too traumatized by precedents But hush you tell me, no one knows The pretzel-bending ways we grow Forever twisting round and round Lost and lost and lost and found Now freaking out, now breaking down Now glaciers found in evening gowns Now agonizing 'Who am I?'s Now dying fire in your eyes At last the sunset settles debts We tally up our last regrets Relenting to incessant ghosts Abandoning essential posts 'Til all that's left is loss and hurt It burns and burns and burns and burns And now I choke on orders filled And mourn alone the youth we killed I scrape the comb across my nettles Pricking feelings, bleeding mettle Finally free from ups and downs, I find myself on solid ground

Lost and Lost and Lost and Found
The gushing river through his interior landscape, runs very deep, this surging Ganga, glaciers feed, is one of Himalayan profligacy. Wouldn't stop, or deter a bit,on any eventuality; a mighty force it is. his beloved sea, was moved by this, swelled up to meet midway, merge.

Surge and seek; reach and merge
Sometimes gold clings to the bone And that's where she comes from On chariots driven by drunken sages She'll glide gracefully into existence and then fade right back out of it Id like to think shes playing a game with her own shadow to see who's leading who As the night rolls on The glaciers will melt into puddles in our cups The dust settles into a stool next to mine And takes on a familiar shape We both look at her in reserved amusement and snicker like young school boys under our drinks One of us will end up in her bed tonight Cheers to that old friend
