"enkidu" poems
You will be argonaut
one more of the supernumerary
trodding upon the cindered ones
come before you
limbs wooden and somite
encircling a moon
tumescent and blue
in permafrost garrote
on constellations edge
tottering over synapse
mocking
like a mime on highwire
your guilt
lupine in its longing
sawtooth timberline in vivisect night
down promontory
to frozen wave
the broken spoke of your step
on sleetslick carapace
past the preterit
embalmed hide of the world
into the silent millstone
berserk
to return emptyhanded
and changed

#You were telling him about Buddha,
you were telling him about Mohammed in the same breath
You never mentioned one time the Man who came
and died a criminal’s death. [Bob Dylan: Precious Angel]
If Christ and His Gospel are offered you
you squirm—then dredge up the gods of the East.
Your act of avoidance is nothing new—
salvation proposed: evasion increased.
Waxing socialistic – as if on cue
your blustering is consistent, at least.
you brandish your anti-Christ point of view.
Descending like Darwin: angel to beast.
In Babylon’s gardens you disembark
to deconstruct Noah, the flood, the ark.
On Gilgamesh, Enkidu, in madness
you ramble—and it fills me with sadness.
There is one truth, undiscerned, unadored.
Be still. In silence, acknowledge your Lord.

You were a wild, wild man.
Not only did you provoke my search of eternal life
but you also showed me the strength of death.
Your soft brown eyes have seen ungodly things
you watched your father's name turn to dust in your mouth
as you spit out things to call him.
His absence has not only caused a rip in your being,
but a restlessness in your heart as well.
You've chased after women and power
and all you've gotten was broken pieces.
I patched you up the first time only to be left,
only to be bruised and battered
physically and mentally.
But you have returned to me,
seeking shelter and guidance
which I will gladly provide.
Your talk of loving my body and skin
has produced an unwelcome feeling in my stomach.
I know I will be left,
bruised and battered,
but I do not mind the broken skin and purple marks
with a sweet mouth like yours.
I've only got two things left to ask;
one will bring you hell
and one will bring you heaven,
will you hit me like a man?
and love me like a woman?

Gilgamesh--two-thirds god, one-third man--was the despot of Uruk. He treated his subjects cruelly. To ameliorate this abominable situation, the gods create Enkidu, who was reared by animals. At first, Gilgamesh and Enkidu fight, but then become friends. They want to cut down a cedar forest that is off limits to mortals. The forest is guarded by a monster, Humbaba, who serves Enlil, the god of earth, wind, and air. With the help of Shamash, the sun god, the two **** Humbaba, then cut down the trees to make a raft. They float back to Uruk. Ishtar, the goddess of love, falls in love with Gilgamesh, but he rebuffs her. Angered, Ishtar asks her father, Anu, the god of the sky, to punish Gilgamesh by bringing down the Bull of Heaven that creates seven years of famine, but Gilgamesh and Enkidu fight and **** the bull. The gods seek revenge and **** Enkidu. Gilgamesh is forlorn, and in his grief begins to wear animals skins. He wanders through the wilderness. Gilgamesh finally meets Utnapishtim to whom the gods have given immortality, but he won't tell Gilgamesh how to gain immortality for himself. Gilgamesh therefore continues his travels, this time through total darkness, until he finnally reaches the sea with its beautiful surroundings. It is there that he meets Siduri. He tells her about his quest for immortality. She responds by telling him to abandon this quest and to learn how to enjoy the pleasures of what remain of the rest of his natural life. Men would die, but humankind would persevere. Gilgamesh is a changed man. He returns to Uruk and sees the city and its people in a different light. He will find meaning and gratification in the years he has left, and humanity will endure.

From flowing rivers of light, you will become a comet-star left alone, who has deliberately deviated from its now predictable orbit around the earth and, true to itself, wanders in the galaxies of infinite cosmos, because it is driven by some unknown-familiar homesickness-Odyssey.
You will sooner or later only take off the Enkidu-shroud of your body before your calculated mortality, as you yourself know that even a simple man sets off on his own towards the other shores of the underworld, no one can accompany him. Your restless, self-defeating Soul wanders on the paths of the deceived; it would be good for you to find your own depth and height inside. Because be careful!
This current mud-world offers only superficial, old, tinsel-like brilliance, nothing else, with which the greedy loyalty-chambers of beating hearts can never be filled, because a growing army of ghosts of doubts is already raging and besieging it. Outside, they can understand less and less that the Darius-treasures they have acquired are only the nails of Golgotha for a coffin, and the boundary line considered honesty, from which there is no turning back, is far away.
Take good care of yourself, Man, as you can know and feel; the beast of hesitations, suspicions, the underdog, the belittling one, is only watching you, watching, suspecting, while it sneaks unnoticed into your troubled nerves and tears apart your handful of self-esteem. It would be good to believe for sure that somewhere in the holy gate of the All, besides your life, which you believe to be wasted, Someone is waiting for you. It would be nice if that crazy mechanic would put a stop to his restless atomic bomb impulses in his buzzing, cogwheel brain.
And although you have long been unable to bear the shackles of your meaningless, wordless silence, your intermediate silence, you must decide within yourself to finally forgive your stubborn, childish selfishness!

Two ninety-nine in hand can purchase
Straight razor, cream and means
To hide the relics of the human race
Within trimmed hedges and metal gates
Although nature’s Peter Principle
Took man to somewhere new
Various climes and unsteady minds
Allowed life to break through
Then contrary to our instincts
In one morning’s moistened grass
We see reflected what we could be
As foreboding clouds float past
The haggard beast within seeps virtue
From holy soles and weary eyes
With will to vanquish and to end you
In order to avoid this banal strife
His trash-sifting gastronomy
Beyond your view and mine
Contrasts with this frightful luxury
In which we for adventure pine
Though he’s the savage, king of Uruk
Never you, much less me
What he’s seen and what he’s been through
Are what we strive to be

There is Presence. Presence....and there is Light.
“Where am I? What and Who am I? Am I alive or dead?"
A suppressed thought makes itself known, “You were once Enkidu....” The simultaneous recognition and brilliance of the place kept Enkidu awestruck and unable to act. Suddenly, sounds. As if they were coming from somewhere inside Enkidu rather than off in the distance. They funneled into each other, a chorus of voices both alien and familiar crescendoing finally into an empty silence from which the most clear whisper he had ever heard trickled forth. Its reverberations vibrating his form as it spoke:
*“This is the Kingdom of light, as it is, which no city on earth can equal. See how its network of light points provide the foundation for the most masterful of physical world’s architecture. Climb the undulating, gyre staircase, built of alternating circuits of thought and emptiness. Go! And approach the dwelling of your true Self, sacred to the all that is, and equalled by no earthly aspect that could ever be. Make your way through the kingdom of light and follow it through to the end.
Realize the equanimity of its presence, examine the truth that creates this platform of existence and see how it pours itself constantly into the construction of the physical world; its palm trees, gardens, orchards, the glorious palaces and temples, the shops and marketplaces, the houses, and the public squares. This is the dwelling of the infinite presence pervading the universe as an imperishable and unchanging force. Welcome to that which is beyond both is and is not...."*

Who is there, my friend, can climb to the sky?
Only the gods dwell forever in sunlight.
As for man, his days are numbered,
whatever he may do, it is but wind.

Man and Animal?
Enkidu and Gilgamesh,
For want of master
Shut the **** up already about your civility
Your calculated reason
On fever pitched high above the nigh, unrelenting woe
The anguish
The souls’ empty hole
Tragically filled with the filthy swill of order
May chaos reign!
For it is the only truth
The only order
With rites that aren’t lost in practice
It is the only father
That doesn’t devour its kin
For it is only sin
When you rage against the coming of the night
The inevitable night
That eclipses all petty human whims
So is it not right?
To follow the animal within
Wrought from chaos old
I made a bed with Satan
Through knowledge
and Animal lust
