complexity is your beauty simplicity your mystery interdependence sustains you once upon a time we dipped bowls into your waters and brought up draughts of life now Skipjacks go fathoms deep into endless depletion charting entangled dead zones broadening into a sea of inertness your delicate eco-essence tips toward oblivion effluvia farmers layer mechanized blankets of nitrates on your sunset shores weaving green tendrils of algae blooms strangling the entanglements of all links in your miraculous food chain the EPA proscribes a Jenny Craig pollution diet to halt the slaughter in oxygen challenged dead zones where rockfish are garroted, oysters get drilled by screwworms and azure tinted soft shell ***** dance soft shoe taps lifting a tinny chorus of sad Piedmont Blues the flat-lining watersheds voiceless warnings tremble rocking the purged nests of screaming ospreys in vocal protest of a sinking Tangier Isle anointing it’s tombstones of unvisited cemeteries with multicolored guano fitting alkaline tributes to the lost inhabitants and forgotten languages sinking into the brine of gray brackish tides Delmarva’s fine intra-continental balance skewed by the oozing industrial swill of Frank Perdue chicken farms ruling the roost of sanctioned sustainability tinging clear watersheds of finger lakes set in splints to repair dislocations and complex compound fractures that may never heal again Music Selection: Taj Mahal: Fishin Blues jbm Oakland 6/7/12

There are no handles upon a language Whereby men take hold of it And mark it with signs for its remembrance. It is a river, this language, Once in a thousand years Breaking a new course Changing its way to the ocean. It is mountain effluvia Moving to valleys And from nation to nation Crossing borders and mixing. Languages die like rivers. Words wrapped round your tongue today And broken to shape of thought Between your teeth and lips speaking Now and today Shall be faded hieroglyphics Ten thousand years from now. Sing--and singing--remember Your song dies and changes And is not here to-morrow Any more than the wind Blowing ten thousand years ago.

time does not heal, and love does not conquer all   though many of you would feel cozy and comforted by such knotted notions   time’s honored contract with chemistry gives us but rust, and dust   words roll off our tongues into the air, for unsuspecting ears   perhaps to allay our deepest fears   that we end as ***** of dung   effluvia from noble maggots the last gasped gasses   from creatures without   the fear of failure or the ken of death

IN goes computer charger! IN goes deck of cards! Effluvia of the travelers trade
what happens to an effluvium held in? does it seep through minuscule pores in the skin? or does it skulk out like the phrase, "silent but deadly"? does it stink like choking sulfur mined? or does just hang close to one’s behind? perhaps it leaves a telltale mark and even causes your dog to bark does it tell the smeller’s olfactory something revealing about thee? or are effluvia all about the same whether ‘tis prince or pauper to blame? alas, all we hominids produce several pounds of the aromatic elixir each day making it fairly safe to say that holding it in would be a ****** crime and cutting a big one hardly makes one less sublime

Harlem...and all the rest of the world
the night begins to dress the earth as i kneel beside the windowsill watching the stars, the only part of the world left unchanged. and i listen to you breathe, your sighs soft like an autumn day. the nape of your neck curves like a crane dusted with wanderlust, its wings unfolded toward the moon. the way your legs tangle around your idea of a perfect girl makes me sink to the floor, draping my arms around my legs. i stare down at my kneecaps, one an oval, the other a full moon – you would’ve called this imperfection. but i kneel beside the windowsill searching for train tracks and airplanes that’ll lead you home because even though you tore me apart, i need to know that when i set you free you’ll be going someplace better. and the moon will sigh at the sight of two not-quite lovers parting, but i forgive you. i forgive you for dreaming of prettier green eyes and softer skin and telling me i would never be good enough. because after i stitch myself back together i’ll be strong enough to move the stars closer to the windowsill with my eyes and stop the effluvia of tears that’ll pour from my soul every time i think of you, breathing.
