"cul" poems
between the concrete river & the park where the bums share a bottle wrapped in a brown paper sack, there is a cul-de-sac of plastic houses holding hands & sharing manicured lawns wooden cars that don't even make any smoke drive down gray asphalt streets. fathers that tell mothers they have jobs wear down street corners sharing beers with the bums, like they already are one. all these paper families rubbing shoulders until everyone has paper cuts. going home to dinner around a table full of paper love. suburbia is flimsy paper towns shining white smiling neighbors & shared lawns paper people slowly falling apart. couples with their tongues down each other's throats, midnight in supermarket parking lots dribbling beer in the backseat they bought off the bums.   they say, I love you, I love you, I love you. until she leaves for a paper husband & he leaves for a paper wife. now they live on two separate cul-de-sacs with the same cutout love, as the parents they despised. & when they have kids one day they will tell them *never kiss before driving, never befriend bums, or guzzle cheap beer in backseats, or on park swings. & never settle for a paper husband or a paper wife.* remembering the love that was flimsy, but never paper. 100,000 miles away from where they grew up & 3,000 miles away from each other 3 kids each & plastic houses rubbing shoulders & sharing lawns living in a paper thin suberbia chafing under their paper love.

Little Ladies
Pocket watch, I tick well. The streets are lizardly crevices Sheer-sided, with holes where to hide. It is best to meet in a cul-de-sac, A palace of velvet With windows of mirrors. There one is safe, There are no family photographs, No rings through the nose, no cries. Bright fish hooks, the smiles of women Gulp at my bulk And I, in my snazzy blacks, Mill a litter of ******* like jellyfish. To nourish The cellos of moans I eat eggs -- Eggs and fish, the essentials, The aphrodisiac squid. My mouth sags, The mouth of Christ When my engine reaches the end of it. The tattle of my Gold joints, my way of turning ******* to ripples of silver Rolls out a carpet, a hush. And there is no end, no end of it. I shall never grow old. New oysters Shriek in the sea and I Glitter like Fontainebleu Gratified, All the fall of water an eye Over whose pool I tenderly Lean and see me.

objectification is very much a cul de sac, it's a one way street... to objectify is to allow an animate object a confirmation of an all-pervasive control... objectification = the inability of an object to become a self-serving subject - no hammer ever managed to self-serve itself into a role of a screwdriver... to be objectified is to have no self-serving subject, i.e. a self; how can a woman ever be "objectified" when she subjects herself to both the object (that's her body) and the subject (that's her mind) - or, objects to the object stated - whereby by "objectification" there's a reinforcement of being subject to the object... her body, which reinforces her subjectivity - when man is prone to objectification, as pronouncing his extended members, a woman is prone to subjection - irony on the ob- prefix, wasn't it ever reverse infatuation? sure, not all the subplots appear in being "objectified" - but at least being "objectified" does not equate to being subject to a man's will... if you can't deal with the "extremes": is being "objectified" as bad as being subject to a niqab?! besides the point, i can't believe that one animate thing can make another animate thing objectified - in the purest sense of: deeming an animate thing inanimate to be: a thing observed without a self-serving self-aware ******

In hollow valleys, off the distant peaks Down in the dim woods, braiding canopies In the quietude of slow-dancing leaves Through the howling and raging of the winds Across plateau of no growth or decline along blind, chiseled cliff, a cul-de-sac In the triumphant reach of high summit Between the rocky canyons of defeat Grace at every gaze despite long travails, dazed in wonder, never cease to amaze In the bone-parched deserts, devoid of life Out of flowing streams, rivers without strife At the depth where lights dwindle to nothing On familiar shore radiant weathering In jubilant rejoicing when love wins Even through the painful cuts as it stings At the plain of anxious waiting and doubt, In tiresome striving to glorious thriving As it always has, Mercy will carry Crushed, it wont let me be; though tears may tarry

Though Tears May Tarry
I knocked on society’s door, Hollow footsteps through the crevice of civility, A ***** welcome mat with a broken doorbell; No visitors wanted who were not invited, And understanding was buried under the porch. In Law’s front yard, picketed with ire and arrayed with disorder, Olive branches strewn across dry grass, lay an empty briefcase marked in leather. Gavel and irony betrayed her whimsically. Garden beds in front of Understanding; Plundered of roses and wanton petals. Bland stems wilted amongst the weeds. Relinquished of entitlement; water led Towards apathy and entropy instead. A house of Perhaps: vacant, Open front door to empty rooms. Leased to opportunity but vacated in days, Renovations procrastinated; mocked by The neighbor of dismay and wry. Ignorance paved a new driveway, The unanimous watch of Lively Cul-de-sac; Gated community with hopes of manicured Lawns and pools. Procreated in the minds Of not wild men, but surveyors.

The Neighborhood
Monroe Ave c. 2018, in my own dream land. K. Daniel's Revelation, cannot reverse what's starting to happen. Darker, more forlorn. No more bar and restaurant patrons, the streets are just a scattered herd of pestilence. No cars, the somnambules own the streets in silence. Honey dripping hipsters, years gone. ***** clothes, hair past their pearls. Asking for boy, asking for O.P.s, asking for girl, asking for crack, asking for methamphetamines. The only noise. We lost the reclamation of the city our parents left. Escaping dead end cul-de-sacs of basement poverty, we no longer had to drive. Stacked with our friends in tenement commune. We delivered the body we consume in service, catering to a more privileged few. Only responsible for one when long work was done, I ensured my red blood's full of fun. We drank and inebriated with design when allowed more free time. But, darling, I think this town was already gentrified. We changed no thing.

It Didn't Even Feel like a Nightmare
I’m thinking of the faded checkered pattern that has been smoothed away by time on the dark cloth seats of a Nissan Pathfinder                                           driving down Ryan Road on a hot day in June. My mother, in the front seat, singing along to a Spice Girls cassette.   I’m thinking: red, plastic, crab-shaped sandbox and                                       McDonald’s Happy Meal toys.   I’m thinking: light princess pink, seafoam green, and robin’s egg blue.   I’m thinking of a framed cheetah cross stitch, hanging on the wall of what                                       used to be our bedroom at my grandparent’s house. I’m thinking: Barbie doll houses and Hot Wheels and a cul-de-sac at                                                                                      the end of the street.   The sweet smell of cigar smoke.  The ice cold splash of the garden hose.  The pop of a bubble.  The sting of soap in the eye.  Dreams by The Cranberries.  As Long as You Love Me by The Backstreet Boys.  A HelloKitty boombox slowly spitting out vapor when the deck builders hit a power line while digging.  The deer in the backyard looking for corn.  The faded wood of a playset that was never really played on. My father: sitting alone on a splintered bench by the firepit at the edge of the woods, empty beer cans at his feet, chain smoking cigarettes, and humming along to a song that is stuck—forever stuck—on the tip of my tongue. I do not know if this happened.  I cannot ask him.   (I’m not sure if I would want to ask him.)   But I can make an educated inference that that line of fiction is really nonfiction.   A memory that feels like a phantom limb.                               Sounds like the sharp crinkle of static.                                                        Covered in a gossamer, dreamlike haze.   There is a distinct otherness to this memory, to who                                      I think I was before the trauma.   We are two different people.  A yin and a yang.  A day and a night.   The hermit crab is soft beneath its hard shell. The asbestos is not apparent within the insulation.   You cannot see the lead in the paint. The mold inside the fruit.

apple did you imagine red? so did I which is weird because the apples I eat are kind of yellow asia I said asia not China I remember the time my history professor told my class to imagine asia I thought of an exotic country with arab sheiks and snake charmers the Chinese the Japanese chopsticks and the orient it was then that she pointed out "haven't Western ideas just messed with you?" and it was then that I realized "Wait; I'm Asian. I've lived in Asia all my life." how come I saw it as something foreign and strange? I've never even seen the things I imagined. I remember when I watched Big Bang Theory and the four friends sat down to Thai food Raj made the mistake of asking, "where are the chopsticks?" which led to Dr. Sheldon Cooper saying (in this paraphrased version:) "they don't use chopsticks. They use spoons and forks. The fork doesn't go into their mouth. They use it to push food unto the spoon, which then goes into their mouth." I sat there thinking.. well that's weird when a couple of months later as I watched the episode again I realized that's how my people eat! that's how I've always eaten.. the houses I picture in an average neighborhood are two story concrete structures with shingled roofs cul-de-sacs and oak trees my own house is one story of brick and wood it is beside a highway and surrounded by guava trees and coconuts I don't even know what a picket fence is.

Picket fence
My tires went over the cracks in the road As I drove by people standing on the sidewalk Exchanging words, emotions, dreams I passed them on my way to the cul-de-sac To exchange money, drugs, humanity The pedestrians penetrated me With piercing eyes of persecution They thought they hated me for being there But their hatred is what led me there They injected hatred into my life The way I injected ****** into my arm They injected banality into my life The way I injected ****** into my brain They injected austerity into my life The way I injected ****** into my heart They prayed that my sedation was of a more permanent nature Before that they prayed for the permanent sedation of my ****** nature Wanting me to be fully awake But not fully alive They snuck into my mind And exchanged emotions with emptiness I snuck into their house And exchanged furniture with emptiness They exchanged words with the police Who exchanged my freedom For everyone else's peace of mind But the exchange between the excommunicated Exacerbated my exiled existence The steel bars placed before me Paled in comparison To the bars that surrounded my heart And faded from memory When the Xanax bars entered my system Until I couldn't walk anymore Making me Professor X Hiding out with the other mutants Trying to lecture the world That zombies turn to demons If the exchange isn't examined When they exit their enclosure Sidewalk standers turn to explanations more elementary Eliminating empathy While elevating themselves above us This is the epitome of our exchange

Madness (Sanity's Cadaver)
Inspired by George Ella Lyon's poem Where I am From I am from cul-de-sacs From skinned knees and seven speed bikes I am from the bewitching perfume of the osmanthus bloom mingling with freshly mown grass I am from the familiar music of the bubbling creek and the cardinals song the swish of a golf club and the thud of a soccer ball I am from hot pavement on bare feet, the taste of honeysuckles, and reaching pine tree forests whose invisible trails and clearings became my secret empire I am from airplanes and home cooking From Mary and Mark northern accents and southern hospitality I am from "use your manners" and "Not enough month left at the end if the money" I am from sunday school and patent leather shoes that pinch my toes from a prayer before dinner that is carved into my brain I am from poland from poppyseed kuchen and kielbasa I am from my grandmother forgetting baking soda in the bread and then... years later, forgetting me too. I am from my grandfather's sense of humor and his unwavering stubbornness. I am from too many cousins to count from pinched cheeks and "How you've grown!" I am from piles of unfinished photo albums brimming with new adventures, frozen faces, and old memories I am from the path I carved for myself with tools that my parents bestowed upon me.

Where I Am From
/             conversation over a bbq dinner being given the information over a new M.I. movie.. i really think tom cruise should have won an oscar for -         born on the 4th of july... without bias,    but given the oscar award for the grunting and heaving, and minimal dialogue / monologue of leonardo's the revenant? the world is a cul de sac...   and what remains of it... is a shitshow worth, of a congested street with nothing but, paupers /             window-shoppers to be lined up; mannequins coming alive and taking to disco dancing the hell out of having donned a boney m afro; drunk, squinty eyed...    looking around, surmising my thought with...            huh?! it's a good thing i'm this good at drinking, never having dropped acid.

Let me tell you a story. When I was young, I was convinced one of two things would happen: I would either die young or I would live ignorant. And I was allowed to believe it. I was careful, avoiding snakes, spiders, dirt, human beings, love. I horded books, enough to give myself a doctorate in any field. And I was called paranoid. Idiotic. A fool. Freak. Doomed. But, I kept living anyway. Destroyed, most of the strings in me cut. But living. And I was allowed to believe it was a gift. Of course, this is a fiction, lie, metaphor, but the truth stands. Children are not born to be afraid. They are taught. Fear is conditioned. Rewarded. Considered a virtue. The wildness of youth is tromped upon by cleat-clad "caution." Gone are bright eyes, reckless smiles, heads thrown back. Life. Dull glances, insurance, cul-de-sacs, and bitten tongues reign. Fear. And fear is one of the deepest scars we can inflict upon another. This story is not mine, though I have been the one to tell it. But I am human. An ocean. A fault line. A candle facing a storm. This tale, in some chisled fascet, mirrors my own. And it will continue as long as I draw breath.

Semi-Autobiographical
Your stained life came to fruition, that frustrated lament like the wind whistling down a chimney, you still held your parched desires to be awaken brick by brick your opaque eyes mused a  lost rusted recoil from where your head used to turn, down gullies and cul de sacs until you ran out of retreats, a pied-à-terre of disrepute like a dreg sipping sloe gin your nostrils flaring in the void

On the end table by the bed A tiny Styrofoam cup Full of unwrapped candy In child’s writing All caps and struggle HAPPY HALLOWEEN I AM SORRY MOM It is hard to stay angry When you have an imagination I picture her at a round table ********* a hospital bracelet There are other people with her Some have construction paper Some have glue There is glitter And painted fingertips I still get homesick For places I have never been to Sometimes miss people I never even knew There is a city inside my chest It bustles Pre pollution But ***** is still legal I have made homes there You have a home here In a city with No hospitals No graveyards Just a cul-de-sac that starts at my throat And double loops along my lungs So many streets My chest x-rays look like upside-down trees without the leaves And when you leave There is a house Inside the city inside my chest That stays empty forever So much left behind There is no room for anger to stay long It exits like forgiveness When you’ve given up all hope When you can only reimagine so much Some of these homes are condemned Though it is hard to stay angry

In the City Inside my Chest it is Hard to Stay Angry
For many centuries we have wandered Waiting for the answers we seek We may have faltered In not asking the right questions Treading over the bridges of human bonding We have come this far Where shall this path lead us? Or, we may be heading towards a cul-de-sac Heading towards a collision with our reality Not meaningful enough Waylaid till now, with many distractions Of all we know We may have been seeking the wrong Do we have the faintest idea What we have lived for, till now?

Journey till Now
a stumble, a tongue slip, a body in bed facing away, an unintended provocation commences a collaboration just another unrequited disaster, marks me as a lowly private in the disarmed ranks of mutilated souls composing, while decomposing, sad love poems, as if the world needed another... a turn away needs a turn to, a cul-de-sac rejection needs a turnabout, a traffic circle pointless, with one exit only, road signed, "exit to a  collaboration of provocation" thanks and thanks a day together normative, now marked by a stinger singed in the early morn. a physical no thanks, her passing lane left turn signal engaged me too passing into this, a disgorged rejection that is to become this realized collaboration. *only I wrote it and you did not read it just provoked its creation, our sad collaboration*

where were you when the tree branches were scraping against my window when i was staring at the cul-de-sac clutching the landline to my chest one time i thought i saw a bear in the woods across from the bus stop but it turned out to be a pile of brush you know i still see things in the dark the other night i woke up from a bad dream and saw teeth that weren’t there i managed to blink them away but there are some things that i can’t like the shadow in the doorway that visits every night and the open hand i am doing everything not to grab it pretends that it needs me but really all i needed was yours

*the sky on my back is heavy now, and the thin light a shadow. i am perched in my godforsaken. but my wings dare the holy and my mind tumbles up like a last supper of glass worms and extra ****** strychnine. in the blink of an  I there's a wink with a slovenly iris... and a dull pearl chink-blissed in the shattered tooth of my gnawing gob. a low frequency in the high place of my moon ***** cul de sac... and an exact replica of my dispossessed reflection... a memory that forgets best as it mulls over and dwells more ****** than the asking price of my naive assurety. it is perfect. and glum. but the gem is the thing on the tip my tongue - seeking and slithering betwixt. it's a fixed star. or some awful charm looming in the dismal and lurid in the Carnival. you are the ghost that feeds my starvation and the means to an end. a complete drink of sour kindness. lopping off heads like a queen of knaves and barking mad mittens. it's very cold where we come from... but we go back. and to return is to speak a lost word where we found it... leaping reason like a squirrel to a bitter branch where the apples are stones and the leaves are not amazing today*.

The way your eyes shine makes me glad I'm not blind. Actually, I think about it all the time. Even Stevie wouldn't wonder, I mean lightning looks good but it's the feeling of the thunder, ya know? Why are we always so reckless? Broken hearts on your checklist. I'm thinking I want more than that. I'm all turnt, how'd I end up in this cul-de-sac? Someone flipped the light switch. I live in a magical world Where doors create portals to opportunities Opportunities to change where you are But those doors are being closed And locks turn those doors into walls Doors are rejected Walls are erected Walking into the middle of a cul-de-sac Is like walking into the middle of the Coliseum Where everybody watches you And hopes you die slowly When we trap ourselves inside We trap ourselves when we dare to travel outward We need to bring closure to this enclosure By gathering the courage to approach her Or the strength to approach him For love, not on a whim But my tires are worn to the rim When I can't see through the win shields As I drive myself through this pin field My tires are flattened Like sheets of satin That drown me in love Until the tension starts stewing When I see their hatred buoy Why the need to isolate Like it's 1938? Modes of thinking I can't appreciate We should share the food on our plate But I fear the hour is too late Even though our power is so great The car starts to die When it should fly We find things to buy When we should cry We take those things inside And lock the door Lonely to the core We stare out the window searching for hope Only to see the arena we've made Built from the prices we paid To buy the things That guard us from contact The materials build up Until we're compact Crushed by the weight of our security Pushed from the light of our purity Unable to muster communication We stare at the PlayStation We need to end this graycation And enter an era of compassionate contemplation

(Corpus Christi, Texas-circa 1947) It's a short block, a cul-de-sac, total of sixteen houses lining the street. No sidewalks, the grass ends where the curb begins. A  lone palm tree stands in the southwest corner of the front yard. There were no fences separating the properties Driveways, leading to the separated garages were the markers. That didn't stop us, however- The neighborhood was a continuous playground. Many families were military- in the U S Navy, Or civil service employees at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station From those sixteen homes were twenty-three children- some families had multiple children- ranging from four to twelve..............I was six years old- For the parents, finding peace and quiet was only a dream I learned to ride a bike on that street- although learning how to stop it was another issue......... Had it not been for that lone palm tree. I became very adept at timing- knowing when to jump off that bike- moments before impact- Eventually, I learned what dad meant with "USE THE BRAKES!" A few bruises some scrapes(arm or knee) Nothing serious- I survived! As our parents aged, they often would reminisce about those days. Dad had two major philosophies about growing up: "Yards were made for kids to play in", and "If we can hear them, at least we know where they are!" Most of the time they were in our backyard playing on our swing and trapeze set that a family friend built for me and my brother. That yard was, basically, a "miniature park."   Our mother was, what is termed now, a "stay at home mom." She was the "overseer, watchdog, and resident medic." At least two or three times a day, she answered the phone, only to hear another mother's voice asking if their kid was over there, and if so, tell him, or her, to go home. While reminiscing, the one thing that our father, mother, and my brother agreed on is, "That was one hell of a sturdy bike!" I never will forget that palm tree. It saved my a_ _ more than once!!
