Mayan Poetry Translations The Receiving of the Flower excerpt from a Mayan love poem loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch Let us sing overflowing with joy as we observe the Receiving of the Flower. The lovely maidens beam; their hearts leap in their ******* Why? Because they will soon yield their virginity to the men they love! ### The Deflowering excerpt from a Mayan love poem loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch Remove your clothes; let down your hair; become as naked as the day you were born— virgins! ### Prelude to ********** excerpt from a Mayan love poem loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch Lay out your most beautiful clothes, maidens! The day of happiness has arrived! Grab your combs, detangle your hair, adorn your earlobes with gaudy pendants. Dress in white as becomes maidens ... Then go, give your lovers the happiness of your laughter! And all the village will rejoice with you, for the day of happiness has arrived! ### The Flower-Strewn Pool excerpt from a Mayan love poem loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch You have arrived at last in the woods where no one can see what you do at the flower-strewn pool ... Remove your clothes, unbraid your hair, become as you were when you first arrived here, virgins, maidens! These are my modern English translations of ancient Mayan love poems. Native Americans were creating poems and songs in pre-Columbian days; Mayan and Aztec literature may date back to the first millennium BCE. Unfortunately the Spanish conquerors of South America destroyed all but four of the thousands of pre-Columbian books that probably once existed (according to translator Michael Coe). Mayan hieroglyphs remain far from fully understood and dating what remains is difficult. However, the best poetry is timeless and I believe we can know our Mayan brothers and sisters a little better through their poems.—Michael R. Temple Hymn 22: an Excerpt to the Sirara Temple of Nanshe by Enheduanna (circa 2285-2250 BCE) loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch O, house, you wild cow! Made to conjure signs of the Divine! You arise, beautiful to behold, bedecked for your Mistress! Enheduanna, the daughter of the famous King Saragon the Great of Akkad, is the first ancient writer whose name remains known today. She appears to be the first named poet in human history and the first known author of prayers and hymns. Enheduanna, who lived circa 2285-2250 BCE, is also one of the first women we know by name. She was high priestess of the goddess Inanna (Ishtar/Astarte/Aphrodite) and the moon god Nanna (Sin) in the Sumerian city-state of Ur. Enheduanna "Temple Hymn 22" translation
Don't be silly ofcourse I am a ****** who has freakish tendencies and uses jibber jabber language and makes absurd analogies like how fried Oreoes, when converted into global currency, is worth one hundred Indian virgins. Fact: I am awkward. I make people feel uncomfortable and they can never follow my train of thought because it leaves at 4pm from Seattle and will end up in Atlantis at approximately 3,000 BCE (unless you take wind resistence into account). I would sometimes rather sit alone and read a book than go out and have "fun" with people and I can become very irritable when around humans for too long and then my brain becomes unfriendly and my demeanor becomes elderly and dry and jokes are not funny but just tiring and childish and then I know it's time for my nap which does not involve sleeping, because that's more of a miracle than walking on ceilings so I mostly sit, eyes open staring and sorting out thoughts, filing away emotions and sensory experiences until I feel recharged and have enough bars to go out and play again.

I wanna run to you in an airport Like they do in 90s romance movies Because I miss you and I’ve been away from home for two years I want to sit on the beach and explain the landscape that You know better than I do In the language it was originally loved in, that You never bothered to learn Why would you? You dip your feet shallowly Into the water instead of dunking yourself Like I do, down up down up down Because you’ll be back tomorrow And I’ll spend fractions of me Waiting for a call or a text For 20 bucks to send you To breathe plumeria-scented air From the oil on the skin of your neck For a picture of the freckles on the webbing between your index and thumb, and the ring That I bought you before I left so that in the pictures you post with your white boyfriend I’m there on your finger So when he’s teaching you the ‘local’ lifestyle I’m there on your finger So when you island hop for a surfing class You keep me on your finger, where I can feel the waves. I want to come home but I can’t, not before I buy you a new ring, out here in the empty expanse of a Where’s Waldo puzzle It has to be Something expensive, something durable That won’t tarnish in the island humidity, something that your San-Francisco friends will ooh and ahh at Because I want to see you wearing it when I get home. I’ve been away from home for fifteen years I return in my dreams, but the soil doesn’t feel right, and the love isn’t how my mother’s father’s father described it At the beach, lots of people swim, but no one else Keeps their head under and lets the water breathe life into their hair. Lets the water into their mouth, chokes, then does it again. But I like the way you Dipped your feet in when you watched me Leave, on a boat chasing Troy Venus my northern star As I enter the storm My boat floats through the violence, against Poseidon’s abundant will because my sail made up of duct-taped exam scores And half-organized sermons Is mightier than any of his sons I’ve been away since 700 BCE But you’ll still know me when I come home

Ibykos Fragment 286, circa 564 BCE loose translation/interpretation by Michael R. Burch Come spring, the grand apple trees stand watered by a gushing river where the maidens’ uncut flowers shiver and the blossoming grape vine swells in the gathering shadows. Unfortunately for me Eros never rests but like a Thracian tempest ablaze with lightning emanates from Aphrodite; the results are frightening— black, bleak, astonishing, violently jolting me from my soles to my soul. Preposterous Eros by Michael R. Burch “Preposterous Eros” – Patricia Falanga Preposterous Eros shot me in the buttocks, with a Devilish grin, spent all my money in a rush then left my heart effete pink mush. Ibykos Fragment 286 (translation)
Thousands of years ago, The loving god did decree A vengeful statement that Still affects you and me. He told the loyal Israelis In the Israel at that time To go to their neighbors And commit a huge crime. It was couched in words Of an eye for an eye And lives in infamy As the millennia go by. This beloved god by decree Ordered a massive genocide Without a future thought or Concern for those who died. **** all of them, even infants!” That’s what they say he said And even up until today There are mounting dead. A peek back at history We watch the bodies burn And know for certain They have never learned. The scariest part of all is That these were all denizens Of a timeless middle-eastern war Now a cause by US citizens. They have fought and murdered For thousands of years on end. So, why do we join in and fight And send our beloved children? Can’t we just agree on a course To wash our nation’s hands of it And recognize this madness As a political bottomless pit? It has never been righteous Or easy to understand How this war goes on over This one small patch of land, Fueled by religious hypocrisy Written in a year that is labeled BCE?
