"australia" poems
Municipal Gum was written by Oodjeroo Noonecaal. Municipal Gum is about the changes in society and the tendency of people to want to control everything. Oodjeroo uses various techniques to convey this idea. At the beginning of the poem Oodjeroo is addressing the tree. This immediately creates empathy for both the tree and her people. By the last line she has emphasised this with the pronoun “us” to show that they suffer a similar fate. This poem expresses how life in Australia has changes especially for Aboriginal people. In the first half of the poem Oodjeroo is talking about how life was for her and others. It explores the changes in society and the displacement of the Aboriginal people from their land. “Whose head hung…Its hopelessness”, the author uses this as further re-iteration of the immorality of the situation and by the use of analogy comparing the tree to her people to further emphasise the shame and lack control of that the Europeans have inflicted upon her and the environment. Oodjeroo uses extended metaphor technique in the very first line of the poem ‘Hard bitumen around your feet’. This means that the gumtree has been placed in the city scape where it is suppressed and not allowed to spread out and be unique in its own way. This is clear and immanently direct link to the pain and suffering endured by the Aborigines post European settlement. Oodjeroo uses vivid language to present these ideas. For example the use of the word castrated is very effective. The connotation of the word is very demeaning. With castration often comes a sense of a loss of pride and power. The word castration is symbolic of how Oodjeroo feels the European have treated Aboriginal people and the environment. Castration also refers to the fact that what is done is done. Nothing can undo what they did and the damaged they have caused. Other symbolism includes the title “Municipal Gum”, municipal meaning community, implies that the gumtree belongs to the community. One of the vast differences between European and Aboriginal law is that Aboriginal people did not believe in the ownership of land or of animals and plants. Municipal Gum is a reference to the Europeans assumptions that everything is theirs to own and control. The rhetorical question, “O fellow citizen, What have they done to us?” is the conclusion of the implications that have been made throughout the poem. Oodjeroo, is advocating for her people and all things wronged by the controlling behaviour of the Europeans. Rhetorical questions are used to provoke thought and to stimulate a pre-determined response. “What have they done to us?” They have “castrated, broken… strapped and buckled” and ultimately changed things to a point that they cannot be fixed. In conclusion, Municipal Gum is a poem about the constrictions and change that the European invaders forced upon the Aboriginal community and the environment she believes that the Europeans have deemed themselves ever powerful and practice their power in a manner that is immoral.

Many people write a "bucket list" of things they want to do before they die.  Now in my 80th year, I don't have the time or the energy to do things that others might aim for, but I have during my life visited many places, seen many things, and enjoyed many experiences that I would have been sorry to miss. There have also been some events that I would have preferred not to experience, but which have enriched my life in different ways, and which I remember with a kind of sad affection.   Some of these are very personal to me, and would not be interesting to most people, but read the note if you wonder why I chose them. She’s got scars on her legs, calls them battle wounds, I’ve got the music up way to loud, so loud we can’t hear our thoughts, city lights provide the background, as we lose control and make love, doing anything to feel anything, because it’s 2018 and it feels like no one gives a fck, so we fck, and after it's said and done she says, “I don’t usually do this.”, yeah well we often do things we don’t usually do, no road home and no rules, no control no lines no tolls, keep knocking and you can come in, but no one’s home, what’s going on up there, how can you be so terrifyingly beautiful, why are you armed with such a stare, I know you’re a weapon but what do you use it for, armed to the teeth no bark all bite, I say she’s a unicorn she says she’s a vampire, and I don’t fall in love but with this one I just might, because we better express ourselves before we expire, got burned from her fire, but it hurt so good, like those cuts that we inflicted onto each other, feeling erratic I guess blame it on the mood, always ready to talk about anything except the truth, she says she only lied to me once, and that was about not liking Ethiopian food, and I pretend to care but honestly don’t know if I give a fck, what the fck, I’m drunk, and I don’t usually drink, but I often do things I don’t usually do, and I don’t mean to be rude, but I’m not sure I love you, because even if I did, I’m not sure it’d matter to you so what’s the use, you want the truth, the truth is we’re born alone and we die alone, and in the middle is where I found you, and for a moment this runaway thought he'd found a home, and I wanted us to stay forever in that moment, laying there naked in each other’s arms, but you were insecure and covered yourself back up, because you didn’t want me to see your scars, you’ve got scars on her legs, calls them battle wounds, I’ve got the music up way to loud, so loud we can’t hear our thoughts, city lights provide the background, as we lose control and make love, doing anything to feel anything, because it’s 2018 and it feels like no one gives a fck... ∆ LaLux ∆ Melbourne, Australia October 2018

Clownlike, happiest on your hands, Feet to the stars, and moon-skulled, Gilled like a fish. A common-sense Thumbs-down on the dodo's mode. Wrapped up in yourself like a spool, Trawling your dark, as owls do. Mute as a turnip from the Fourth Of July to All Fools' Day, O high-riser, my little loaf. Vague as fog and looked for like mail. Farther off than Australia. Bent-backed Atlas, our traveled prawn. Snug as a bud and at home Like a sprat in a pickle jug. A creel of eels, all ripples. Jumpy as a Mexican bean. Right, like a well-done sum. A clean slate, with your own face on.

Those happy Morris dancers make for a happy sight They wear bright scarlet ribbons and their shirts and trousers white, They clash their sticks whilst dancing and you hear the timbers ring Though 'twould seem that Morris dancing is not a female thing. I've never seen a female Morris dancer I stand corrected if I'm wrong It has it's roots in England and to England it belong And I hope that Morris dancing will not go the way of rhyme That in a changing World it won't lose out to time. They brought their culture with them from England far away A culture perhaps fading like many of the old cultures are today With the old dances of Europe I see a link somewhere And sad to hear that Morris dancers are now becoming rare. At the Dandenong Ranges festival east of Melbourne they perform every year And after in the ***** tent they laugh as they drink their beer, They brought a thing of beauty when they brought their dancing here And to those marvellous Morris dancers let us raise our glass of cheer. Morris dancing vary from English Village to Village or so I have been told Though the times they are a changing and fading are the ways of old But those marvellous Morris dancers may they dance forever more In the sunshine of Australia far from England's rainy shore.

A part of me lives miles and minutes and moments away in an indefinite, dreamy place where clocks are not my enemy and I associate the word “distance" with travel, not longing My heart has sailed across the Atlantic, moved eagerly through the Indian Ocean, navigated using an atlas inked with butterflies and stars that gleam ardently (just as your rosemary eyes do, every once in a blue moon, when you’re able to sew together the disarrayed thoughts that dwell in your messy head) You are so, so far away However, if I avoid calendars and geography, it feels like you’re right here beside me In the afternoon, when the sun shines through my bedroom window and paints the world map on my wall with light, I shut my eyelids and run my thumb along the string that stretches across the parchment, connecting me to you I pretend that when I open my eyes, you will be here and that my aching fingers that are so desperately grasping the paper will be intertwined with yours

1 The other day I saw a picture of you. Shirt buttoned up to your throat, Pants cutting off the blood circulation in your pelvis, Shoes shining brighter than the north star, And a smile being pulled across your cheeks Like an archer pulling a bow string. I smiled back at my computer screen. 2 I’ve listened to this album at least 30 times. I own three versions of it. UK deluxe, US deluxe, Target Deluxe. Everything about you is deluxe. Your eyes, your voice, your breath As it passes through the microphone and into my ears. 3 I believe in fate But not so much in destiny. I don’t scream at my reflection anymore And I’m described as independent. For the most part. I’m a pretty trustworthy person And I promise I’m not that desperate. 4 The music ripples through my veins As I whip my curls at the mirror. The hairbrush pressed against my mouth And I repeat the lyrics that roll past your lips so smoothly. 5 I can almost feel your arms Wrap around my waist before I go to sleep. I had a dream You and I were together And you were happy And I was happy And everyone was happy. But I know if my dream became reality No one would be happy. Jealousy would taint the spit on other girls’ tongues And the distance between New Jersey and Australia is too much. Even for me. 5 I can almost feel your arms Wrap around my waist before I got to sleep. 5 I can almost feel you. 5 We have the same eye color. 6 We have the same hair color. 7 I am just an insecure girl. You are taking over the world. You are stepping in the soil of every state. And you won’t look at me Longer for three seconds in the New York City heat. 8 I never thought I would be one of those girls. One of those girls Who latch onto a boy’s identity, Not knowing his soul But knowing his spirit. I’ve seen you three times. You don’t even realize. I try too hard and I’m convinced you notice this. 9 You are nine months older than me. In your eyes I am just a baby. My cocoon of pictures of you is the womb I am being baked in. You won’t follow me back on twitter. 10 You are just my celebrity crush But you have such an impact on me. Go back home. Let me rest. Go back to bed. I’ll have that dream again And I won’t speak of it And no one has to know of this Pathetic excuse for love I carry in me like a dead fetus. 10 You are just my celebrity crush. It was never supposed to go this far. 10 You are just my celebrity crush. 10 You can never love me The same way I love you.

I pull open the door And hunt for food in the dim orange light. "There's nothing inside" Well, actually, There is something: Months old cream cheeses precariously stacked atop each other, Several mysterious bottles of brown sauces, Dried out leafy vegetables, But nothing This lazy *** can eat without preparing. I push close the door, Leaving my stomach rumbling and empty, But filling my mind with Dreams Three-fourths of the dull gray door is covered With colorful ceramic magnets From my dad’s corporate adventures To Batangas, Bohol, Bacolod, Davao, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Macau, Nepal, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, China, Dubai, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Canada, Greece, and Australia. I examine each magnet’s contour and shine, Letting its foreign dust seep into my fingers. I dream that soon I will return all those dusts to their lands And bring home more magnets of my own.

Hats off to Demosthenes! Democracy, democracy, But.. In Australia, Bit of a failure, Forced to vote for politicians, We elect politicians.... We need leaders of power and vision, Not talking heads on television! Compelled to vote in a democracy? Still our lucky country, O tempora, O mores! Democracy, democracy, Hats off to Demosthenes!

UNEMPLOYMENT All we hear about is unemployment, Appears to be a global torment, Couldn't we of think creative solutions, New inventions, using less pollution? New ideas, concepts for the plebs to need, What can we invent today? Yes indeed, We could start by teaching global literacy, Imagine how many books we'd need! What about one holistic food capsule, Made in Australia, daily and healthful? Then we could grow forests and sell trees, The world does need oxygen to breathe. We could sell books and food pills, Get your own ideas, not such dills! Let's hear this motto in our schools, What can we invent today? Beautiful!

Watching Trending videos on YouTube, 2 of the top ten videos are dead, which means I’m watching ghosts, having deja vu see it seems I’ve seen this scene before, Rest In Peace Mac Miller, Resit In Pease Xxxtentacion, this spirits have be writing frantically, going for gold or at least an honorable mention, want to be anything except forgotten, skin is fresh but core is rotten, scent of cologne watching Post Malone, give an interview on Jimmy Fallon, seems we’ve fallen, and our idols are a sign of where we’re at, war never stopped it just changed forms, from Germany to Vietnam to Iraq, as the sun sets over San Francisco Bay, I watch the colors run, indifferent to the cause and the effect, nothing’s perfect but the sky always looks so beautiful, as I gaze out this bedroom window, in a house I do not own, just touched down from Australia, back in The Bay for another round, taking a moment to reflect, in my feelings as the sun sets, and it feels like we’ve seen it all, even though we know we haven’t seen anything yet, watching Trending videos on YouTube, 2 of the top ten videos are dead, which means I’m watching ghosts, having deja vu see it seems I’ve seen this scene before… ∆ LaLux ∆

Before you get lost in the unfinished maps of her veins the ones like yours, but not stitched up too many times to count on the ticks of a clock, make sure that she trusts you enough to tell the truth. Make sure that she loves you enough to know how you lie. Remember that every single time you open your mouth, she's wishing you're saying I love you. Remember that on Fridays she doesn't want to cook. And she sure doesn't want you to cook anything that was slaughtered. Remember that she prefers cheap whiskey over champagne. And when you're opening your ribcage to show her how fast your heart beats when she grabs your wrists, make sure the butterflies are set free. Make sure they find the window. Make sure they find a home. Remember that every living creature is just that, living. Remember that they have a heartbeat. And when you stop breathing when you see her with her hair down, when you're thinking about starting a religion about girls with flowers for eyes, tell her she's beautiful. Tell her she's so full of the future. Get her a telescope so you can show her the moon when it's bigger than both your thumbs. Take her skiing while it's Summer in Australia even though you curse the snow as if it were born out of wedlock. Let her know she's not the first but she's definitely the only, and you're so scared of dying. You never know what you have until it's locked firmly in your grasp as if to not let it run away. You might lose a lot of blood but you'll never lose your way home. I don't want to hear the dial tone. I want to hear your voice, I want to hear you scream. Tell me to leave. Tell me that I am the only road that leads you to a purpose. That in a world of blindness I am so technicolour. Even though I can't promise you that, I can give you my words, thrusted from my lungs like wildfire. Searching for the way out. Talk to me about religion, please please convince me that there is something out there other than rotting in the ground for all of eternity. Bible scripture doesn't whisper of your lips like my pillows do. I never really thought about pillow talk until they started speaking me to sleep. I find myself found by the curvature of your spine, of the shadows that take up residence on your shoulders like they have lived there all along. I want to kiss away every bit of pain that has ever stopped you from smiling at strangers and let you know that I'm coming home and I will always find your hands. Let your ribs shake when your heart has had enough. Let them shake. Let the rain come through your window while you're sitting there in your makeshift darkroom. You are the only thing I know about consistency. And before I get lost in the unfinished maps of your veins, I will be making sure they lead to me.
