Heme aquí ya, profesor
de lenguas vivas (ayer
maestro de gay-saber,
aprendiz de ruiseñor),
en un pueblo húmedo y frío,
destartalado y sombrío,
entre andaluz y manchego.Invierno. Cerca del fuego.
Fuera llueve un agua fina,
que ora se trueca en neblina,
ora se torna aguanieve.Fantástico labrador,
pienso en los campos.¡Señor
qué bien haces!  Llueve, llueve
tu agua constante y menuda
sobre alcaceles y habares,
tu agua muda,
en viñedos y olivares.Te bendecirán conmigo
los sembradores del trigo;
los que viven de coger
la aceituna;
los que esperan la fortuna
de comer;
los que hogaño,
como antaño,
tienen toda su moneda
en la rueda,
traidora rueda del año.¡Llueve, llueve; tu neblina
que se torne en aguanieve,
y otra vez en agua fina!¡Llueve, Señor, llueve, llueve!   En mi estancia, iluminada
por esta luz invernal
-la tarde gris tamizada
por la lluvia y el cristal-,
sueño y medito.                 Clarea
el reloj arrinconado,
y su tic-tic, olvidado
por repetido, golpea.Tic-tic, tic-tic... Ya te he oído.
Tic-tic, tic-tic... Siempre igual,
monótono y aburrido.Tic-tic, tic-tic, el latido
de un corazón de metal.En estos pueblos, ¿se escucha
el latir del tiempo?  No.En estos pueblos se lucha
sin tregua con el reló,
con esa monotonía
que mide un tiempo vacío.Pero ¿tu hora es la mía?
¿Tu tiempo, reloj, el mío?(Tic-tic, tic-tic...) Era un día
(Tic-tic, tic-tic) que pasó,
y lo que yo más quería
la muerte se lo llevó.   Lejos suena un clamoreo
de campanas...Arrecia el repiqueteo
de la lluvia en las ventanas.Fantástico labrador,
vuelvo a mis campos.
fuente a fuente y río a río,
como este tiempo de hastío
corriendo a la mar remota,
en cuanto quiere nacer,
cuanto espera
florecer
al sol de la primavera,
sé piadosa,
que mañana
serás espiga temprana,
prado verde, carne rosa,
y más: razón y locura
y amargura
de querer y no poder
creer, creer y creer!   Anochece;
el hilo de la bombilla
se enrojece,
luego brilla,
resplandece
poco más que una cerilla.Dios sabe dónde andarán
mis gafas... entre librotes
revistas y papelotes,
¿quién las encuentra?... Aquí están.Libros nuevos. Abro uno
de Unamuno.¡Oh, el dilecto,
predilecto
de esta España que se agita,
porque nace o resucita!Siempre te ha sido, ¡oh Rector
de Salamanca!, leal
este humilde profesor
de un instituto rural.Esa tu filosofía
que llamas diletantesca,
voltaria y funambulesca,
gran don Miguel, es la mía.Agua del buen manantial,
siempre viva,
fugitiva;
poesía, cosa cordial.¿Constructora?-No hay cimiento
ni en el alma ni en el viento-.Bogadora,
marinera,
hacia la mar sin ribera.Enrique Bergson: Los datos

¿verdad, maestro Unamuno?Bergson no da como aquel
Immanuel
el volatín inmortal;
este endiablado judío
ha hallado el libre albedrío
dentro de su mechinal.No está mal;
cada sabio, su problema,
y cada loco, su tema.Algo importa
que en la vida mala y corta
que llevamos
libres o siervos seamos:
aguas a torrentes.
                  -A mares.¡Las fatigas, los sudores
que pasan los labradores!En otro tiempo...
                  Llovía
también cuando Dios quería.-Hasta mañana, señores.
  Tic-tic, tic-tic... Ya pasó
un día como otro día,
dice la monotonía
del reloj.   Sobre mi mesa Los datos
de la conciencia, inmediatos. No está mal
este yo fundamental,
contingente y libre, a ratos,
creativo, original;
este yo que vive y siente
dentro la carne mortal
¡ay! por saltar impaciente
las bardas de su corral.

The clock goes on
Like a siren’s song
Calling me into a long sleep
The clock goes on
Until you hear twelve gongs
In this game of time it plays for keeps

Tic Toc Tic Tic Toc
Around and Around this clock with its sound
Like the crier of the town
Trying to tell the news
But nothing’s done, is what we’ve found
Whether it’s humans or hounds
Now it’s time for a snooze

Tic Toc Tic Tic Toc
Am I like the clock, in the endless loop?
Working til my eyes droop
til I can finally count sheep?
Am I a baller, never getting the hoop?
following orders like a troop?
Or am I a leader, one a little neater, like little bo beep?

Tic Toc Tic Tic Toc
Time goes on
It’s time to move on
But nothing ever got done
The sun moves on
Nearing the dawn
Now it’s time for fun

Tic Toc Tic Tic Toc
Now that it’s night
It’s time to take flight
Leaving my other life behind
Of that plight
I’m starting to lose sight
And happiness is what I find

Tic... Tic... Tic...
I lay in my bed.
It's ten o'clock.
My bed is warm.
I'm tired as Hell.
Tic... Tic... Tic...
I'm still in bed.
It's midnight.
My mind has been racing.
I just want to sleep.
Tic...Tic... Tic...
I just woke up.
It's two am.
Twenty minutes of sleep.
All at once.
New record.
Tic... Tic... Tic...
I've moved my bed to the floor.
Made a little nest there with my blankets.
It's three in the morning.
I'm still so tired.
Tic... Tic... Tic...
My alarm goes off.
It's five am.
Time to get ready for school.
46 minutes of sleep.
I need coffee.

Tic tac, tic tac, tic tac,
It’s the sound I hear at night
Of a clock that’s up to brag
Of it’s skill to move the time.

Tic tac, tic tac, tic tac,
Every second in the dark
Leaves inevitable mark
On a heart that stopped to hark.

Tic tac, tic tac, tic tac,
Even candles know the tact,
For I see it’s burning tongues,
Kissing air in the glass.

Tic tac, tic tac, tic tac,
Coexisting dark and light,
Moving arrow never stops,
Serving purpose of a guide.

Tic tac, tic tac, tic tac,
I hear you whisking into night,
Sleepless, one and only clock,
Softly bragging in the dark.

Tic… toc …Tic… toc… Tic… toc…
The rhythm of my heart’s been established…
As my mind synchronizes to the tempo of my emotions
My Symphony Of Emotion Begins…

Tic… toc …Tic… toc… Tic… toc…
Conducting this masterpiece is cautiously managed
Every belief has a unique impression
My Quartet of Passion Begins To Play

Tic… toc …Tic… toc… Tic… toc…
…The Tempo’s Slowing
Let’s Add a nice kick
Through Devotions Blowing

Tic… toc …Tic… toc… Tic… toc…
To Keep Our Place
The Vocals Of Love
Come Into Play

Tic… toc …Tic… toc… Tic… toc…
Keep the metronome’s Tempo
Move This Melody Forward
Before The tempo of the metronome slows down…

"Tick, tick, tick,"
The little watch shouts.
He sits inside my pocket
And awaits me drawing him out.

Tic, tic, tic
It's time for me to rest.
Society and anxiety
Give me too much stress.

"Tick, tick, tick,"
His voice puts me to sleep.
I love his perfect rhythms-
The perfect time he keeps.

Tic, tic, tic
The second I put him away,
The vicious tics come back
I wish they wouldn't stay.

"Tick, tick, tick,"
Directly into my ear.
The only way to stay 'normal'
Is through the rhythm I hear.

Tic, tic, tic
Whenever I am stressed,
The painful tics come back
And cannot be suppressed.

"Tick, tick, tick,"
The second-hand marches on.
Enduring all his hardships,
He's rewound every dawn.

Tic, tic, tic
My fists are bruised and aching.
"What a crazy spaz"
Society's gaze is saying.

"Tick, tick, tick,"
My lovely watch proclaims.
I whisper the rhythm back;
The perfection keeps me sane.

- - -

I need my pocket watch beside me.
Though it may not seem I do.
You simply do not understand
The troubles I'm pushing through.

The terrible sounds and motions
Are so very, very draining.
The worry to always suppress,
Wears out by the day's ending.

My watch sits beside me,
Ticking as I write this
(Ticking so I don't have to),
And reading as a witness.
This poem is about how stress and anxiety often make my tics worse. I always keep a pocket watch with me, however, so I can pull it out and place it near my ear to listen to the perfect ticking noise it makes. This very unceasing rhythm is what keeps me from having a breakdown most of the time.

goes the clock
you set your eyes on her
and now you're lost

tic-toc
goes the clock
you talk to her
and drown in the pools
of molten gold
that are her eyes

tic-toc
goes the clock
you talk to her
until the sun is up
and her phone battery's flat

tic-toc
goes the clock
you hold her hand
and know you've got her

tic-toc
goes the clock
you hug her tight
and know she's lost

tic-toc
goes the clock
you kiss her with
your deceitful lips

tic-toc
goes the clock
she's all yours and
you possess her

tic-toc
goes the clock
you make her happy
and maybe for a while
you even care

tic-toc
goes the clock
she's truly lost,
she loves you

tic-toc
goes the clock
but you grew bored
and faked it

tic-toc
goes the clock
you left her
and you broke her

tic-toc
goes the clock*
and now even
nursery rhymes
are about you

A timeless river kept a clock.
tic. toc. tic. toc.
It had the nerve to wonder how
tic. toc. tic. toc.
its flow was ever interrupted
tic. toc. tic. toc.
by every pebble.
tic. toc.
by every rock.

That irritable clock
Continues to
Tic toc
Tic toc
Tic toc
Counting down time
Til I'll be nothing but slime
The begrudging noise
Tic toc
Tic toc
Tic toc
Unless it slips away
And the memories of yesterday
Fade
And there is nothing I would trade
For the love of a moment
Where nothing is spoken
And the glimpse of peace
Is not just a tease
But then that moment is stolen
And that bit that was woven
Is unraveled and stretched til you hear
Nothing but
Tic toc
Tic toc
Tic toc
Tic toc....
Ssussh sssussh sssussh
Fingers glide gently over
Flesh revealed
Sssussh sssussh thump
Muscles draw taut
Then relax
Sssussh thump thump
Thumb presses against a full lip
Squeezing, release
Thump thump thump
The lip is twisted tight
As other fingers graze naked flesh
Ththump ththump ththump
Warmth gathers in her belly
Chills rise like dew on a rose petal
Thrrummp thrrump thrruump
Hand slides across the swell of the breast
Hard ended tip feel trapped in a burst
Of scalding heat
Tonn ton ton ton ton
Loud moan escapes parted lips
Suddenly the other tip is awash in wet heat
Followed by red hot lava
Tic tic tic tic tic
Curve of the hip caressed by the palm
Moans, mews, and pants are heard
Tic tic tic tic tic tic thump thump
Digits slip across bare wet lips
Teeth nip, bite,  mouth suckles, tongue bathes
Ta ta ta tictic ta ta tictic
Long legs part, opening to the probe
Calloused tips probe tight dripping tunnel
Ththump ththump ththump
Pelvis rotates and rises meeting roughness
Wanting more, needing more
Ththump ththump ththump
Teeth release the rosebud finding soft sweet lip
Pressing deeply into the tunnel, tongue slides across
Pouty flesh
Dundum dundum dundum
Beads of perspiration flow down cheeks, neck
Tongues collide like swords in battle
Dadum dadum dadum
Calls, cries, screams, pants swallowed by swords
Fingers digging deeper pushing up in the tunnel
Du du du du
Harder, faster, pushing, biting, extending, reaching
Mouth releases suddenly biting hard upon the ******

Spasms rock entire body, waves flood the tunnel
Tongue licks over the bite as ears savor the sweet screams
Hips continue to rock riding unbelievable forces

Heartbeat begins to thump again as it seemed to stop
Breathless as lips touch hers once again
Bodies entwined in bliss

the thick september dusk is wrapped
in clouds of barbie pink, topped with a
royal crest of rich purple and swirls
of orange creamsicle, slowly fading
into a smoky gray slate.
the air is cooled, complemented by a
crisp breeze that loosens the dying leaves
from their precarious perches atop the
firm pennsylvania maples.
together, we walk through the thick of
the forest, guided only by the skeleton of
an old railroad track, bending and twisting.
our sense of adventure has led us away from
the tiny park, past the dilapidated basketball
courts, and onto the former highway of a
belching beast, forgotten and replaced by
its sleek and faster baby brother, SEPTA.
our rusty path is lined with dying weeds,
turned from ***** green to dull brown by
the creeping chill and the burning sun.

conversation passes between us, topics
that have since slipped my mind because
they are as unimportant as the napkins
we threw in the trash an hour beforehand.
at first, i am on autopilot; we discourse, but
my answers are not considered.
my eyes are glued upon the rise and fall
of my black sneakers, white laces turned
boring brown, and the dust they kick up
with each and every footstep.
moments pass as hours, when suddenly i am
compelled to stop.
when i first lift my eyeballs, the world
spins and bends and loses focus--
maybe those were not just mushrooms
on my pizza? but no, just an illusion.
when i regain my eyesight, i can view
a family of deer--the proud father on
guard and adorned with a crown of antlers,
a skittish mother watching with careful
observation, and three children, halfway
grown; when i realize how long i have
been staring and that you must be long
gone, i look up, but there you stand,
closely regarding the family as i was.
and when i follow your gaze, they
are gone, vanished.

without speaking, we both silently agree
that we must research the disappearing
deer, so we begin to climb downward.
the bank is steep, but lined with thick
branches, dying grips and stepping stones.
we make our way down and find
the river sprawling in front of us like
a lazy snake making its way home, to the
bright point slowly sinking into the horizon.
an impossibly big maple sits on the levee,
and giant roots make wonderful benches,
so we sit ourselves among the beautifully
colored ground of late fronds, and i light
a cigarette, my own slow death.
the delaware tributary gurgles around us,
and for those few minutes, we are totally
silent; i can taste the death in my mouth,
but i do not wash it away--i must remember.

after the moment has passed, we ascend the
***** and resume our trek along the pathway.
"what is that!?" you ask suddenly.
i follow your pointing finger and at first,
i only see the never-ending tail of power lines.
but i look further, and i see something odd--
a non-sequitor, a cluster of red in the trees.
"i can't tell," i reply. "it's too far."
"it's unnatural. we must investigate."
again, we let our feet carry us along, but
now we have a destination.
"i wonder what i could be," i say aloud.
"it must be a tic-tac," you answer.
my brow furrows and i question you with
amusement. "a tic-tac?"
"yes! doesn't it look like a tic-tac?"
i examine the clump, and see it is oblong.
"the shape is right," i say slowly. "maybe
it is a cinnamon tic-tac."
"exactly," you reply. "it is a giant red tic-
tac, just sitting here in the trees!"
"i wonder what it is waiting for?"
"another giant, a giant person," you
speculate. "yes," i continue, "it must
be waiting for somebody with a big enough
mouth to come along and slurp it up."
as our feet draw us closer, the clump gets larger
and larger, and its definition begins to wane.
"a giant tic-tac, right here under our noses,"
you say. "what are the odds?"

after what seems like an eternity, we are finally
close enough to examine it fully--surprise!
it is only a thicket turned red by its annual death.

Tic.
Tock.
There goes the clock.

Tic.
Tock.
There goes another hour.
Power.
That's what the clock has over us,
ticking from our first fuss,
to the last time we tie our shoes and get on a bus.

Tic.
Tock.
There goes the clock.

Tic.
Tock.
Another clogged up rut.
The odd feeling in my gut,
the sound of the ticking making me jut.
The door is shut.

Tic.
Tock.
There goes the clock.

Tic.
Tock.
Can't you see?

It was me.
I tried to be set free,
I wanted to flee,
I just wanted to be.
Forgive me?

Tic.
Tock.
There goes the clock.

Tic.
Tock.
The mouse is in trouble.

Bubble.
The clock had it popped,
your life has been cropped,
your skull was dropped.

Tic.
Tock.
There goes the clock.

Tic, tock.
Tic, tock.
The clock is running out on you and me.

Tic, tock.
Tic, tock.
I'm sorry because I know that you blame me.

Tic, tock.
Tic, tock.
Stop blaming me for your mistake.

Tic, tock.
Tic, tock.
Your abuse has stopped.
Sorry, this is not that good.
The slow tic, tic, tic
here all are poised
all wait and anticipate, that call
the call to action, that call to flight

In this room they wait
by the beaches radar sentinels still state
all is clear, all is safe
yet all still wait, tic tic tic

How many here in this bunker
how many have lost loved ones
within this dusty war room
all tears have turned to rust

Many wonder if this will ever end
will all be final if they surrender
should the enemy pierce this inner sanctum
who will be left to protect this land

The tic tic tic seams to get louder
all here are poised to the same dance
the word scramble is on their red lips
as all the phones do now start to ring

I have cheapened myself with profanity for far too long
it's time to call time out and slow down
my heart is very much broken
I don't feel good inside
I get upset real easily
when one is cruel to me

I am sorry for my dark mood
the pain inside just won't go
I am horrified I am so angry
I going to right now take it slow
been crying myself to sleep
I am a wreck on a **** heap

Don't let someone upset you this much
that's what they keep saying
yet it's ringing in my head
and I wish that I was dead

Cause of death

Time ran out
Out of breath
Cry and shout

it’s half past eleven
I had a dream and thought;
I am in heaven.

Tic toc
heaven turned into hell
am I still dreaming?
I can’t tell

Tic toc
it’s an hour past midnight
I am wide awake
and wrapped in by the night

Tic toc
on the clock blinks a fat two
I have only one thing on my mind;
and that is you

Tic toc
now it’s already three
a devil on my shoulder tells me to overthink
and I agree

Tic toc
it’s nearly four
I am still not tired
and think some more

Tic toc
now the clock shows five
and god, how grateful I am
to be alive

Tic toc
my windows let through, the light of dawn
but my eyes close and show me darkness,
to which I am drawn

I am exhausted because insomnia

Tic-Toc, Tic-Toc,
The clock plays it's infernal tune,
No care whatsoever,
I wish the clock will stop.

Tic-Toc, Tic-Toc,
My stomach turned,
My heart dropped,
My eyes began to water.

I stare at the man before me,
The man who did wrong,
The man that caused me grief,
I look away, not wanting to look at him.

Tic-Toc,
I closed my eyes,
Listening to the ticking,
Wishing for it to be over
I wrote this while I was at court.

maybe you are my new nervous tick, because let's be honest, I'm a little obsessive. and if it's not you, it's the person after you. the person I can't recognize because I am so blind to everything but what we had. it's my involuntary physical and mental attraction to you that makes me tic, makes a tic, that is my tic. it's repetitive; calling you Friday night after Friday night, believing it may fill me up without drowning me out. but I'm empty, I'm always empty. I don't mean to involve you, and I know you think I do this because you're still my everything, but you're just a something. a physical preoccupation I've yet to overcome, as you're always in reach. cover up the void you've left behind, never fill it - that isn't your place; tics are not mutually beneficial. we in no way help each other. do not know a way to help each other. you aren't my saving grace; you're the bad habit. the phantom limb I need to forget. the tic to fit my criteria: close, but never here. available to hold me, but in holding me you're making my tears. could you ever fathom such a senseless incongruity? and just where are you now? you're holding me in the darkness but I know you don't feel what I feel, won't ever feel a thing. me ignoring the truth of your coldness, the brevity of your affection - tics like your timepiece. maybe next Friday night, it'll be different. maybe next Friday night, I won't need a tic like a crutch, won't be crushed. until then.

Beat
Beat back the urge

Beat it back to the Stone Age
You nerd!

I got a motor mouth
A mile a minute
It's a song and dance
But I'm not in it

Bite
Bite your lip

Fool yourself into thinkin'
You've beat it

I got a tigger finger
No gun to pull
A fragile headstock
Lost my cool

I'm tic tock tic tock tic tock tickin away
I'll blast off like a rocket into outer space
You can keep it down for a little while
But soon enough you'll be forced to smile

Keep
Keep your cool

Keep it locked up tight
One rule

I got a worn out shirt
It Never fits right
I shift my shoulders
Under the lights

Make
Yourself do better

Make it all go away
It's the weather

I'm a bit twitchy Don't touch me
I need you to love me
You're so far above and I'm so far below
I'm losing control and it's just not enough
My nerves are aching to just get rough
I'm worried what happens if I'm in freeze
I get up the itch and I need a release
There's so much to manage to do and to say
My mouth is just in the way

I'm tic tock tic tock tic tock tickin away
I'll blast off like a rocket into outer space
You can keep it down for a little while
But soon enough you'll be forced to smile

tic tac toe to me
isn’t what you think
in fact it really stinks

this is what you think:
that I’m not true
because I follow
the directions on my orange bottle

tic tac toe to me
is a lengthy process
I’ve been off of them;
I cared about myself way less

tic tac toe to you
just reminds you of me;
just like everything else.
reminds you of all my tells.

tic tac toe resolves our woes
they can go from head to toes
I’ll never fill a void…
you’ll only think I toyed

I'm tic tock tic tock tic tock tickin away
I'll blast off like a rocket into outer space
You can keep it down for a little while
But soon enough you'll be forced to smile

Keep
Keep your cool

Keep it locked up tight
One rule

I got a worn out shirt
It Never fits right
I shift my shoulders
Under the lights

Make
Yourself do better

Make it all go away
It's the weather

I'm tic tock tic tock tic tock tickin away
I'll blast off like a rocket into outer space
You can keep it down for a little while
But soon enough you'll be forced to smile

We're just tic tacs
Stuck toppled over each other

In a box
In a pocket
In a purse
Or a socket

Just tic tacs waiting
We'll be bought and eaten

Used selfishly
Eaten in ones
In pairs
In threes
In handfulls

As a snack
To be sold
Freshen breath
Eaten when bored

Just tic tacs in a box
Juggled on the road
By people bigger than us
Who can use and abuse

Dispensable tic tacs
One after the other

All the same

the clock above the mantel
recites this steady prose

this house stands empty
outside its walls

the wailing wind
echoes through its halls

the crows, ravens, vultures
invited they all came

to pick and divide
the mosaic of this life

the walls stripped bare
the carpets rolled up

only the creaking floor
protests this naked home

above the mantel the crier remains
reciting this steady prose

L B Aug 2016
It was the time of my Auntie Bee summers
   I was small then
She had a parakeet that landed on my head
   and a bathtub too
   with water so deep!
   and legs and claws!
**** thing nearly chased me down the stairs!

She lived in slumbery Windsor Locks
where bugs hung-out in the haze
   of teenage August
I played in the tall weeds
   with a shoeless Italian boy
   who ate tomatoes like apples
and cucumbers right off the vine!
He was ***** free and foreign!
   We played— reckless, abandoned
behind the gas pump, under the tractor, in the barn
   and through the endless fields
   I didn’t know....
   His name was Tony
I ate pizza with him—the first time

At Auntie Bee’s I had to go to bed at eight
but I could watch night flowers
   bloom on wallpaper
She came in to say good night
slippered, shadowy, night dress slightly open
   and I peeped her *******!
   like Tony’s cucumbers!
I had never seen my mother’s wonders....

Night spread its wings from the old fan—
   a bird of tireless exhaustion
whipped, whipped, whipped to death in its cage
   tireless exhaustion
   tic-tocking in time to a wind-up clock
   stretched out on the whine
   of the overland trucks
Route Five through the night of an open window

In the grape arbor below—
tremulous incessant
   crickets    crickets    crickets
tremulous incessant—insides of a child
   a summer child
not yet ready for the fall of answers

Auntie Bee had a daughter—Maureen
I followed her everywhere I could
   I was small then--
do anything for a stick of Juicy Fruit
I followed Maureen through my dreams
   of being sixteen
   and woke to Peggy’s “Fever”
   while she tied her sneakers
against the mattress by my head

I followed Maureen (in my mind)
   tanned and bandanned
to work in the fields of shade tobacco
with all those Puerto Rican boys!
She knew where she was going!

I was small then
...do anything for a stick of  gum

“Mauney! Mauney! Mauney!”
   ...through the goldenrod of roadside
through the smell of oil that damped the dust
I followed Maureen’s white shorts
and chestnut hair...to the corner store
I followed the way the boys smiled
the way the screen door slammed
   on her bright behind
the way her lips taunted and took
   the coke-bottle’s green
I followed Maureen

I swear, I tried for hours to get that right!

Must have been Peggy Lee’s “Fever”

Maureen ties her sneakers in my face
Flaunts her years above my head
She has that look—
“We kids don’t know nothin”
(Little turds” that we be)

…followin’ Maureen
through the goldenrod of roadside
tic-tockin’, beboppin’

“Fever— in the morning
Fever all through the night….”

I was seven years old and did I ever get this!
Peggy Lee's stripped down performance is the epitome of ***.

Windsor Locks is in Connecticut.
