on arrival
i do that thing dogs do
walk around in circles
until satisfied
that settling is worth it
and lying down
as in this town
i sensed a welcoming
in the manner of the people
the warmth of the sunshine
the layout of living areas
the acceptance of all classes of person
so i settled and stayed
one night
two nights
three nights
four nights
each day i saw all
from the village idiot
to the literate intelligentsia
from the tradie
to the mum
from the baby
to the oldie
i watched the coming and going
of the town
i watched the locals in the pub
i watched the tourists push trolley bags
i watched the itinerant watchers
watching me watch, watching
me watch
people responded
the best conversations
did not start with
where are you from
i got interested in their sports
i listened to their music
i drank Guinness with them
i traded stories
which are the best transaction

Tension électrique
de regards fuyants
Touchers mécaniques
de doigts hésitants
Ce poème a une odeur froide
du vide entre deux corps
à jamais indécis

Trois ans sans avoir relevé le défi;
Trois ans, c'en est presque mille,
C'est toute une vie;
Une vie qui se défile,
Qui se défile en nous voyant;
Une vie qui file pendant mille ans;
Mille ans à tirer dans le vide,
À tisser la mire.

The river is so hard to see
Rushing by below
The fog is thick, so none will be
Affected when I go
The water seems so close, so far
Reaching out a hand
To hold me near when life is hard
A grave of shining sand
The bridge, the wind, are hard and cruel
Silent to my pain
The world that takes me for a fool
Here taunting me again
The leap, the rush, the silent death
Dancing through my mind
Slow sinking as I take a breath
The suicide is kind
But then she takes me by the arm
Looks into my eyes
We turn and walk back to the car
I do not want to die
