I never had anyone notice me but you,
And you grind me into dust.
My heart is as worthless to you
As the dry crust of bread.
No white, fluffy angels here
To sing me toward the light;
God said, “Adios, babe,”
And left the room in a hurry.
You waited in the shadows,
Dressed in black with a scotch in hand,
In the velvet back of this old club.
You took my soul—
A thin pastrami sandwich,
Something barely valuable,
Yet enough to keep everyone full.
But I guarantee
We will keep meeting like this,
Side by side at that restaurant
At the end of the universe.
I pick up my phone
And hit send.
