I wish for a peace of mind
Away from the voices
Haunting me all the time
I close my eyes as they get louder
Hoping the darkness will wash them away
Instead pictures ignite, keeping me at bay
I realize there’s no escape
To free me from this cage
I wait till sleep comes to drift me away
From the words and images of the demons keeping me awake

There used to be a time
when I would hear people muttering,
"I have trouble sleeping."
"How pathetic," I used to think.
"How can you not sleep?
It’s sleeping.
You close your eyes,
you drift,
you rest.
I’ll never have this problem in my life."
And yet,
here I lay.
Restless.
Sleepless.
Insomniac.
What troubles me, I do not know.
It is this life that ails me,
I should have known.
