I have a son not too far south of me, close enough to jump in my car and go speak of my love but I won't put a bit in his mouth or saddle him with my troubles We could cut our palms open with sharp knives and be blood brothers the rest of our lives and I could find another woman in the mountains instead of staying here with his mother he loves while he swims his own sea of life without me instead I drive long drives and count the keys on the black piano of the highways at night passing beautiful women who wave and smile back but I'm only dreaming keeping night watch over my bed,  I dream about old songs that sing back to me like one by Townes Van Zandt about going down to see a woman named Kathleen.

Only dreaming
When she came, she came to leave. I did not wait for time to grieve; And when she asked for my memory, So that in her mind, I’d always be A part of her, and her for mine; And though it worked for quite some time, Yesterday she vanished from my mind. My promise lost I said goodbye, To a face that made me cry. For her, I said there was no way To ever arrive at this sad day; But when I did, I did not mind Because stars were born just for their shine; But as with most their light still dies, Until all we have is what’s left behind. To think where fine life once was kissed Now was cold and was not missed – But was her life the thing that shined? Or just a thing that lived to die? There was no answer I could find, Except that love had left my mind.
