St Simons Island, Georgia USA East Beach, 12/4/2011 "Your focus determines your reality." —Qui-Gon Jinn Witnessing an amazing low-tide phenomenon, as if a walkway to a parallel world has suddenly appeared, extending one-half mile from East Beach out to sea People are slowly gathering, walking, stopping, stooping, staring in silence, speaking softly— I'm as eager as Simon Peter to join them, yet somewhat afraid of walking where there has been only seawater minutes before— Chattering dolphins beckoning in the distance instill confidence So I join them, stepping from the beach onto the other-worldly terrain, first 42 steps confirming we are not alone! Surrounded by a menagerie of sand ***** clams, beach flea amphipods, sea roach isopods, ghost, hermit, and fiddler ***** even cannonball jellyfish— shades of the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine in miniature But beware of semidiurnal tidal cycles— Twice a day at high tide the sea, like an unstable vortex of a Chappa'ai, consumes the phenomenon, even the beach itself to the edge of the dune "The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience." —Frank Herbert "So long and thanks for all the fish!" —Farewell message from exiting dolphins, translated by Douglas Adams Mark Toney ©️ 2023

Sand Bar
It comes in deep waves first the warmth, then the chill; the salty taste that overpowers, and the foam that seeks to fill. Above beckons the alternating current a body becomes stretched only to sink, and rise no more beneath the surface; past the seaweed among the fiery reef, beware, there lurks the end of still life. Soon when muscles ache when there is no fight left with such heavy limbs that struggle; heed my tepid words when the dark clouds form, it's much better to sink low, and embrace the undertow.

Even mermaids succumb
I went to the ocean today It was warm and muggy, I longed for the spray We drove the short distance to park Then took our time to look for the shark With a towel, surf board and shades It does not take much to make the most of the place I picked up a straw on the way to the shore I thought of the moments of pleasure it gave just before So many at the beach this time of year So many enjoy plastic cups filled with cheer My feet hit the sand, it’s warmth filled my soul The sound of the gulls filled my head as they soared Pink beach towel spread out, I positioned myself Watched as children laughed and played for their health When my skin became hot I decided to go Into the surf crashing to and fro First steps are tentative, the braver I become As the warm ocean laps around my tum Seaweed strands wrap round my legs with Burst ballon strings and single use bags Bird feathers are scattered and head for the sea shore I dive beneath waves through bubbles am born once more As people we live the way we want We must incorporate our waste in agreement Otherwise we have no luxuries you see No straws to make our fizzy drinks quite so fizzy No lids to hold our mommas milky coffee No plastic bags to carry our goods from the shop so cocky So embrace the ocean and all that lies within But do it now before it’s turned into one mega bin

Ocean
Spiny jellyfish Tucked in her curves Twinkles her tentacles At the sun Rising with the waves That make her go every which way To the east or to the west She just goes with the flow Letting the current pull her through The oceans pressure and blow holes Spineless jellyfish Drifts through the waters, To the left and to the right And floats with the waves In an endless sea of time

Spiny Jellyfish
Sheesh! I'm wetter than Lobster's sweater Damp as Dolphin's socks Dripping like Killer-whale's bikini bottoms That she left to dry on some rocks. I'm soggy as Otter's pockets And soaked as Sea-lion's dungarees Moist as the Trout's lipglossed pout Saturated like an Eel's Levi jeans ;-p
